Ó

Because the Memory Stick is SOOO puny.... courtesy of Chunglam, who's decided he'd try something a bit towards the hardware side this time. It's not the first attempt we've seen at making a wireless external storage solution for the PSP: a long time ago (okay, just a little under a year ago) someone wrote up a How-To on using an Asus WL-HDD drive enclosure as an external storage device for the PSP, using RSS.

This time, Chunglam used an Asus WL-500g/gx/gp Wi-Fi router with attached 40GB USB drive and the source code with the precompiled binary for the router. The code is available at the DL link below; custom firmware for the router (not the PSP this time) will be required and can be downloaded separately (click on via below for more details). Needless to say, whoever wants to do this needs experience with working with Wi-Fi routers, not just the PSP.

It's still not a perfect solution, Chunglam notes: the router requires an AC outlet (hence the quotation marks in "portable", but at least you can take 40 gigs of storage space with you to the nearest power outlet if it comes to that). The "pure" portable solution, he says, would be to use a... Microsoft Zune, since it also has Wi-Fi. But first, he says we have to hack its firmware security and run Linux in it.

Is it just us, or is it possible that Chunglam just said that with a wry, ironic smile plastered on his face?

...using the USB2 Power MaxBox built-in file server ? Less expensive, no need to hack it, better transfert performance, supportting 3'5 hdd so less stockage limitation ?

Archos PMA400 run linus also has Wi-Fi. 30GB

A new project is developing a Linux port for Archos portable multimedia harddisk player/recorders. The LinAV project began in April, and has focused initially on the AV3xx-series devices, so far releasing a working kernel and a build environment for graphical applications based on the nano-X API.

 » yeah

the only thing to hack on a Zune its teh DRM (google it). That stuff its a security niche with viral properties that not only when u download a sample track you have the 3 day or 3 play limit, but if you pass a album to a friend from zune to zune, an album that you ripped yourselve, it will have the DRM too. Your friend will get the album at 3day/3play period.

This wasnt on the first plans for the zune but the music industry screamed and said they would sue microsoft if no restriction was applied to this feature and there DRM was born.

 » Its portable

You can make this router portable...Most routers have a dc voltage input to make them work 5-10 volts DC..It wouldnt be hard to het a battery pack to power the router..granted battery would have to be large in size..

But if your going on a long flight or drive just stick it in your laptop bag or back pack..DC converter for the car would work good also...Just think outside the box people...:)

 » Zune

Not sure why anyone would want to even bother with buying a Zune. If you are considering it you may want to read reviews such as this one:

Sounds like a terrible device.

 » Works on mipsel...

Been doing this for a while with a linksys NSLU2 and compiling tyranid's usbhost and nethost.

Nothing special, but libusb is kinda picky... Also works on my linksys WRTSL54GS with Thibor 15C :)

The clipped NSLU2 runs at 266Mhz with 32MB of memory and 8MB of flash, just like the WRTSL54GS. The slug has 2 USB ports and 1 ethernet, the WRTSL54GS has 1, 5 ethernet, and broadcom 54g.

Plus, another cool thing to do is mount a windows box through SMB or another linux box through NFS, and access them directly from the PSP as well.

I think I've got a picture around here somewhere with the PSP saying it had 250GB free... :)

 » Same here

Please provide some links. I tried but was unable to get libusb/usbhost to work on my Slug.

Yeah, sorry, don't usually check old posts.
I've got the binaries around somewhere...

The main problem is, you need to clip your slug and flash it to SlugOS/OpenSLUG-LE (debian) for libusb to operate properly, for some reason it doesn't like the ARM in big endian mode.
Then ipkg update, install the compiler sets, and install libusb-devel, then build libusb.
After that, tyranid's usbhost.c should compile, you may get some thumb interwork errors, but you can pretty much ignore 'em. I'll find and post the binaries when I dig out my slug's dev drive.

 » Tried it, doesn't work

I have both an ASUS WL-HDD and a Linksys NSLU2 and this did not work for me. It's great if it worked for the author, but if most of the people can't get it going themselves, it's useless. Once again, a coder comes out with a great application that almost nobody can use, how about a tutorial on exactly how to install this.
