piKey v0.2 allows you to use the QWERTY Keyboard on your PSP - Image 1

UPDATE: Going over the Noobz site, we found out that they have released an updated version of piKey v0.2. Apparently, the earlier release contained a bug in the Danzeff plugin which caused it not to work. The bug has now been fixed so go ahead and download the updated version of piKey v0.2 through our download link below. We here at QJ thank rc_square24 for pointing us to the right direction!

Download: piKey v0.2 (updated)

The homebrew app which lets you use a keyboard on your PSP is back, fresh from the coding labs of the Noobz Team. Fanjita just rolled piKey v0.2 out on their site, and we're serving it up for grabs in QJ-landia. For those who are new to this, piKey (also done with harleyg's help) is a keyboard driver that allows you to input data into your PSP by using a keyboard.

It's been said before that an "IR keyboard is your best option since USB keyboard support will likely be impossible." While this release still doesn't have USB support (if ever there will be), here's the full changelog, complete with new features and additions:
  • A new keypress mode, which allows more natural use of the keyboard in action games etc. The default mode is now keypress mode, and the keyboard will switch automatically to text input mode when required.
  • Custom key-to-button assignment - so now you can define WASD buttons for FPS game movement, as well as cursor keys for XMB movement, for instance.
  • Support for mapping keypresses to analog joystick movements.
  • Support for converting keypresses into Danzeff OSK presses - so now you can use your physical keyboard with homebrew that uses the Danzeff virtual keyboard - e.g. AFKIM.
  • Installer now fixed to correctly install to flash0, to support GAME150 homebrew.
  • Palm UW keyboard ought to at least partially work, but I can't test it myself.
  • Optional on-screen status information.
  • Various minor bugfixes.
Specifics of the bugfixes can be found in the readme. Here are some known bugs and other developer notes:
  • Multilingual support isn't great. Especially, the Sony OSK uses different key layouts for different regions, these are not correctly supported yet.
  • The Danzeff plugin occasionally misses keypresses when you type a lot of text at once.
  • When putting the PSP in standby, piKey doesn't usually recover properly when power is restored.
  • It has only been tested on 3.10 OE firmware. It ought to work on other OE firmwares, but I haven't tested it myself.
We stress the importance of reading the docs folder included in the bundle. All you need to know and more is found there in the user guide. Make sure you do use it. Since this driver involves having to write and install onto flash, make sure you know what you're doing or you might stand the risk of BRICKING YOUR PSP.

» what model of keyboard works best?

This is good news with further support but we still need to have a mouse with
keyboard for the axsis tilting required in most FPS's where a mouse would be
used for this action. There is a wifi palm keyboard that has a mouse built right
in, what I want to know is, does this support the use of that mouse and or
support for a keyboard with a USB plug built in that could use any kind of
mouse for better accuracy?

Thanks for all you'r efforts and I look forward to future releases.

To use the Danzeff mode, must i change keyboard = 15 ; to keyboard = 0 ; ("0 - NO keyboard") ?

The setting is in pspirkeyb.ini

If anyone could answer, I'd get it and use my psp in class as a pda notetaker. Haha

 » How?

How do you get danzeff text input to work?

by flash this (Unregistered) - 2007-04-23
 » why?

why has it always got to be flashed? why can't this be an eboot? why do we need to use keys for mouse movement? palm has a wireless kboard with a mouse on it.

what kboards are supported the best and why don't they ever tell us this when releasing an update of kboard apps.

They tell us, oh heres another app for kboard but never, never, never tells us what kboard to use.

I'm really tired of all this secrecy around these apps upon their release. Give us and eboot version and a kboard model number so we can all instantly be happy instead of trying to figure it all out on our own.

Use a wireless kboard what supports either built in or usb mouse or for that matter, a wireless mouse that works with a wireless keyboard. they come in combo packages you know.

STFU retard, is it really that hard to read the read me you moron? BTW it MUST be a PRX FYI.

   Re: Fanjita - 2007-04-24
» The info is there if you look

Plenty of info on the www.noobz.eu articles about piKey about what is supported. And a lot of time has been spent on the readme documentation, it answers a lot of your questions.

Some technical reasons for your other questions:

It is an OE plugin, hence it needs to be a PRX.

It needs to be flashed to support GAME150 mode. That's a limitation of OE.

It's not possible to support USB peripherals on the PSP. So most mice just won't work.

If you want a specific keyboard/mouse supported, then donate some money for the hardware to be researched. I can't afford the time or money to go adding all possible hardware of my own accord.

And I also don't have the time to make this a perfect app immediately. If it doesn't support something you want, ask nicely for it - *****ing will get you nowhere.

There's no secrecy, just read the documentation.

they were able to provide support for usb thumb drives, mice, and keyboards on a ti-84 graphing calculator. surely they could do it on psp too

Hey guys just posting letting you know to only use this on 3.10OE-A', as I have tested it on 3.30, and 3.40 OE firmwares with negative results.

Great work to the Noobz team (and harleyg :p), keep up the good work.

isnt the infared port 4 the psp on top of the psp? so they in order 2 use an IR keyboard the keyboard would have 2 be very close 2 to the top of the psp right? looks kind of uncomfortable 2 me 2 be typing like that. but thats just me

   Re: MrMojo (Unregistered) - 2007-04-24
 » not weird...

The keyboards involved have a stand with a tilting arm, with the IR leds on it, so you'll have your PSP on the stand, that arm above it to face the IR port of the PSP, and the keyboard in front of you ready to type in...

   Re: ybakker (Unregistered) - 2007-04-24
» not very weird at all

usually those infrared keyboards send the light from the top down.

Check the image, and the little thingy above the PDA.

 » as cool as..

it wuld be to use a keyboard on your psp, dev is right, it is not comfortable at all. Maybe it is just the keyboard i am using. it comes with a reflector so the psp stands up against the reflector then i need to set the reflector PERFECTLY to hit the ir sensor bar. It takes about 20 minutes to set up, and then barely works.

Some keyboards are better than others. The Targus arrangement may look a bit odd, but I've never had problems with it, even with the PSP sitting at strange angles.

Thank you very much for bringing us the .2 version of PiKey, and the speedy Danzeff fix. It was well worth the wait. Now I can use AFKIM with a keyboard... It's soooo much easier than using aimonpsp or ebuddy mobile. You guys rock! Pikey also works with a PalmOne UW keyboard I got at a yard sale for a dollar rofl. The lady didn't know what it was good for, and it was sealed in the package too. Keep it up noobz, you never cease to amaze me. :D
