The good news: Sony has announced by way of the PlayStation Premier in Tokyo that they're making plans to release the 1Seg Tuner for the PSP. This device will attach on the PSP's USB port, like the Go!Cam and the GPS transceiver, and will provide the PSP with the ability to view digital TV broadcasts.

The bad news: Sony further announced that this gadget is exclusive to the upcoming PSP-Slim. The 1Seg Tuner is expected to launch in Japan this September 20. It'll be interesting to see how well this technology will mesh with the Slim's previously announced video out capability. As for its technical specs:

  • 1seg tuner - Image 1Model Number: PSP-S310
  • Desired retail price: JP¥ 6,980 (US$ 57)
  • Hardware specifications
    • External size: Approximately 55 x 31.8 x 14.2mm
    • Mass: Approximately 17g
    • Accessory: Private case
    • Interface: USB
    • 1seg tuner - Image 1Broadcast system: ISDB-T
    • Corresponding area: Japan
  • Software specifications:
    • Program viewing
    • Subtitle indication
    • Channel setting
    • Program schedule indication and the like
Sony further announced that the PSP-2000 (though we'd just call it Slim) will also have six colors available arriving along its September debut (from left to right): Piano Black (PSP-2000 PB), Ceramic White (PSP-2000 CW), Ice Silver (PSP-2000 IS), Rose Pink (PSP-2000 RP), Lavender Purple (PSP-2000 LP), and Felicia ("Ferri shear") Blue (PSP-2000 FB).

Further complementing the PSP-2000's upcoming launch in Japan is a new set of audio/video cables to maximize its new video out function, as well as a remote control-equipped headphone accessory which can be bought for JP¥ 2,800 (US$ 19.99).

» Psp Slim is the PSP of the future.

Instead of 'hatin' on the new psp which is inevitably coming, we need to be preparing to make it homebrew compatible.

I'm sure the first day it's out, someone is gonna mod it, and a tutorial will be online on how to install it on the fat psp. I guarantee u

   Re: VSG (Unregistered) - 2007-07-18
 » how about my idea

since none of the new slim accessories seems to be compatible with psp-1000 model how about adding a feature on the next psp/ps3 firmware update.
im talking about when you connect the psp on the ps3 via USB cable, there will be an reverse remote play option, whereas the user have the option to display the PSP screen on the PS3/HDTV and control the fat PSP via the Sixaxis.
this is a cost effective solution for fat PSP users so we can also enjoy playing psp games on HDTV without having to fork out extra money to buy psp slim or those bulky DIY add-ons on the psp to display on tv.

if anyone likes my idea, please do make a petition to Sony to provide such feature to us fat psp users. and i will not care if you credit me or not.

i know Sony will not do my said idea because it will not help the sales of the new psp slim but its not bad to suggest such idea than can help us fat psp users doesn't it.

that idea wouldn't go well with sony since it would compete with psp-2000's video out functionality. there wouldnt be a reason to buy the new psp if thats in place.

 » LOL at VSG

You want to petition sony to add features to the OLD psp? Ha ha! good luck with that one!

Please sony spend money adding features to new firmware so I can do stuff with my old PSP so I don't need to buy the new PSP you're trying to sell me.

Do you know what kind of company sony is, or the reason there is a new PSP?

That's why I say don't buy the new PSP, sony memory sticks, or PSP software (unless somehow it's really good.)

 » no slim for me.

My PSP has never given me problems. It doesn't show signs of giving me problems. It's a day 1 psp. I sure as hell won't need to buy a new one. So I guess this is something that I will miss.

Re: Mister Common Sense - 2007-07-19
 » I agree

I bought my PSP in the first month it came out.

I like my old style PSP as well. The only problem is "support" (if you can call it that) comes from sony. That's why we need homebrew on the PSP.

Sony won't release the GPS or the camera in the US. Now they have a TV tuner that's only for their new PSP. What a load of BS. The Japanese TV tuner isn't compatible with US television stations so you can't import it.

I wish an aftermarket company would make the acessories sony won't and sell them here. Of course sony would probably just sue them for some stupid reason.

For those who complains of ads or pop-ups. Ever heard of Mozilla Firefox? Use it together with add-ons such as No-Script and AdBlock Plus. See the result.

 » It isn't that bad

I don't own a PSP but I have really wanted to ever since Gradius Collection came out. The fact that they are launching the PSP Slim was enough for me to get one. Personally, a TV tuner is a stupid idea considering that I want the PSP for games.

 » Idiots

This place is full of idiots, you lot who are crying over this Slim PSP, No, Sony don't want you to get a new PSP if you don't want to, you have yours, enjoy it, Sony want new customers and people who haven't got a PSP to get a Slim PSP, you see that, it's called marketing. It's something you learn about and understand if your I.Q. is higher than 80.

   Re: ... (Unregistered) - 2007-07-18
 » ...

so tell us why this gadget will only work on the new model?
marketing my 4$$, this is just bs.

Re: Mister Common Sense - 2007-07-19
 » .

There's no reason they can't make their acessories compatible between both versions. Both have USB ports as I recall and upgradable firmware....

The TV out is also possible on the old model, but just a BS excuse to upgrade and abandon homebrew. The remote jack is also a serial port....
   by snatcher (Unregistered) - 2007-07-18
 » ...

I think they will let this be Slim exclusive for few months and then they will release it for old PSP too.Personally, I don't care about this if it is only for Japan, and i don't watch TV at home so this won't be anything to feel bad about because I bought old PSP and can't enjoy its full capabilites.

   by madkid (Unregistered) - 2007-07-18
 » whats this?

some sort of way to get people to buy the new slim PSP?
Screw that. I like the idea of having a TV on my PSP but heck I'm not gonna buy a new PSP just for that.

Unless there is some serious hacks for the new slim and the old PSP doesnt have any advantages, then I will consider getting one...

 » Wow o.O

I am amazed at the Shear ranting on QJ, of people who never have any credible sources, to back up there ideas.

Now for people who are mad at sony's decision to release there revised hardware. There can only be so many reasons why you'd be pissed.

1) some Elementary / Middle-Schooler with no job, only ranting cause theres practically nothing better to do.

2) or some drifter, living with there parents, also with no job.

I for one am glad that there releasing a Psp Lite. Why? I have a job and the money. And if money is a problem, i can always sell my old one.

Its like you guys cant think through the many options that are available to you.

Who cares if there might be a PS3 Slim? So it'll Be smaller, GROW UP. Your 60-80GB PS3 is Just fine for what you'll be using it for. Besides the PS3 looks bad ass as it is.

Alot of the people i see commenting in QJ are so unbearably immature, and selfish. If i were your mother id put soap in all your mouths. lol

Re: you sir are an idiot (Unregistered) - 2007-07-18
 » period

people arent pissed at the release of the new PSP dimwit
they're pissed because all the new accessories are PSP slim only
have you got that yet
they are getting angry at the fact that the new TV-out function is slim model only
and because TV Tuner add-on is slim model only
what if you got a PS3 then sony announced a PS3 slim
then announced all these wicked accessories for slim PS3 only
its a slap in the face to the current PSP owners who most paid more for their PSP than its currently available for now
its easy to see why people are angry if you actually read the "ranting"

   Re: Ranmasaotome (Unregistered) - 2007-07-18

first of all, there technically IS an xbox slim. it's called the xbox 1337. Ok, it's called the elite, but still, 1337 is so much geekier :P Also, for those of you whining about the slim psp, just buy one. And if you aren't able to afford it, just join this site: ***** dot com/259295 (sorry, links are filtered. Just make it one long word, and include the /259295 right after the com). I made $360 in one month, so you could get 2 psp slims for that much. Also, if you have any questions, email me at uber1337h4xx0r (gmail)

   by Ranmasaotome (Unregistered) - 2007-07-18
 » Oh BTW

The reason why sony would only release there Digital TV tuner for just the Slimmer PSP IS probably because It packs Double the RAM. AND THAT HAS BEEN COMFIRMED.

The old one had 32MB of RAM, the slim has 64MB of RAM.
1) For future games to take advantage of for caching of Games for faster loading.
2) And probably for new features, like the TV tuner.

Clearly the old PSP doesn't have the RAM for most of the new features sony wants to be releasing onto the amazing device.

So TV Tuner on the old PSP? Doesn't seem likely, But you never know, the homebrew community might spur something up. Till then, STOP COMPLAINING YOU FREAKING BABY'S.

I thought it might be possible to upgrade the actual PSP from 32MB RAM to 64MB..... Hopefully somebody mill make it possible.

 » My Idea

i think the TV tuner could be usualbe on old PSPs.. by looks of the PSPslim, it seems like you can attatch old assessorys like the Chotto Shot camera or the
