Unnofficial Daedalus R14 Beta Released - Nintendo 64 Emulator for PSP - Image 1

News on the homebrew front! A beta has been released for Daedalus R14, the Nintendo 64 emulator for the Sony PSP. This update doesn't come from StrmnNrmn though, but from developer Wally of Homebrew Heaven.

The program is based on StrmnNrmn's latest SVN source, and features the beginnings of Media Engine support. It might still be too early to hope for an official release, but hey, we have the beta. That's good news all around. Here are the developer's notes from Wally:

Some changes are :
  • A bit of ME support
  • A tad faster
  • A bit buggier.
  • New Icons etc
Known issues:
  • Debug menus popup - these are bypassable by pressing the SQUARE button and shouldn't be very often.
That's it for now folks, we'll be sure to keep you updated on any new info. Be sure to read the documentation that is included in the download.

Download: Unofficial Daedalus R14 Beta (Wally)

*UPDATE*: Upon a reminder from Ari Bornstein (thanks for the wake up call) and a little of retrogressive investigation of our own, we figure that this is still StrmnNrmn's code, only now it's in Wally's own special flavor.

Ari says that this is the same R14 Beta that he told us about some months earlier, and that came from StrmnNrmn. So we stand corrected: Daedalus R14 Beta is still from StrmnNrmn and is made available to our FW 3.xx powered PSPs by way of Wally's efforts. Yes, FW 3.xx - PSP Slims included.

*UPDATE*: Thanks to QJ.NET readers fungusinmymilk and femar7856, we now know that the code of Daedalus R14 has been with more than one homebrew developer.

CaptainMorgan4, (a.k.a. Captain Morgan) of StrmnNrmn.com released his own version of Daedalus R14 Beta, dubbed "CPM R14beta," which the homebrew developer claims to be a little bit more stable.

Readers say that it's stabler than that of Wally's release. The author said:

Since Wally released his updated version of the R14beta I find it basically harmless to release here the R14beta I have from the previous "Daedalus R14beta" thread not too long ago. Anyway I believe it's pretty stable it works great with my PSP so I figured I'd let you guys check it out.

We're not sure if its FW 3.xx compatible yet, but it's likely to be. Captain Morgan says that the archive contains the developer's files and may instantly reflect a good configuration for the N64 emulator. The 1.6 MB download also includes a few preview thumbnails for some games.

Both packages are related somehow, however, and Captain Morgan still credits his version to HomebrewHeaven.net and fellow developer Wally. The download comes next, and it's renamed just to avoid confusion.

Oh and note that we've renamed and resorted Wally's version, too. Link above updated. Enjoy!

 » eh..

this isn't faster at all. Mario 64 wont even boot unless i load a savestate. even after it loads, the controls don't work. the only game i noticed working (but not as fast as R13) was Rush 2. i may try it again later

CM64 one is much better, and more stable than the wally build. my last comment is intended towards the wally build.

I hate theses unofficial things that doesn't work better then the official one. This unofficial update sucks. Waste of space for the QJ servers.

Some changes are :

* A bit of ME support
* A tad faster
* A bit buggier.
* New Icons etc

^oh wow even a noob can do that by changing default settings.

 » n64 can happen but won't

because everyone working on it s either Lazy or stupid..

its been 3 *****ing goddamn years!

3 mother*****ing years since Strmnnrmn started working on this and he's released about one version every 4 months and it's NOWHERE NEAR cloose to being finished because he apparently works on it for 30 minutes a month.

So to hell with EVERYONE who peddles false hope

You ALL suck

   Re: Erekiddo - 2008-05-26
 » yeah

thats sad but true.....i wrote the same thing like 1 year ago and yet after three long years there is no n64 emulator for the psp(thats my point of view....) and there will never be......exept if nintendo creates releases its own emulator........i dont think that would happen too 8)

   Re: NeilR - 2008-05-26
 » congrats

"everyone working on it s either Lazy or stupid.."

You win my "most ridiculously uninformed and unappreciative user" award.

Some people seem so quick to complain when they can't get what they want; the difference here is you're dealing with developers who spend personal time producing FREE software; asking for nothing in return except maybe a little respect and patience. The Homebrew scene wouldn't exist at all if everyone acted like a spoiled and selfish kid.

   Re: zoogr2 - 2008-05-26
 » Dude!

I hate people like you. You just nag about the "lagging" or the speed. I have a solution for all your stupid problems DO IT YOURSELF!!. Or is it that you are even more stupid then the people you say are working on the emu. This people have a life. nuff said

   Re: UltimaArmorX - 2008-05-27
» Illegal machine I always hated you.

But anyways, stop using the word "life" on the internet like it's some vital status we need to be aware of.

Everyone has a life, the value of it only drops depending on it's use. It is common sense, but poor word play...I am sick of it!

Emulator takes time

same with PS2 and xbox for PC
   by M33 User - 2008-05-26
 » True

Don't make fun of him. I admit, I have waited for this for a long time and all I get is the some release that's worst. No offense but I'm sure it can be done at a faster rate. If PS games work on psp flawless then this can. Sorry, but this is so annoying. They had plenty of time at this point of time.

   Re: Strongbadunit2 - 2008-05-26
 » lol

PS games where made by sony, same processor which means it doesnt have to be decoded and converted.

n64 is more powerful than ps1 processor wise, not graphics card wise. (polygons per sec)
   by M33 User - 2008-05-26
 » Sorry

But this just pissed me off. And StrmnNrmn didn't make it so fine. But where is he at. He never gives us news, he hasn't said anything new in months, and he acts like he gave it up. Let me know if you are retired so I can leave u alone. It would be nice to have a good update. Was this even tested?

   by PSPMAN90 - 2008-05-26
» Ok, is a lot laggie now more han ever lol, but...

Remember is a Beta! Beta means that is not stable, but is functional at least... Lot of Bugs...

It also tells you what doesn't run in a Blue Scheme on the Top when the game "starts".

But, obviously the R13 Runs better than This R14 Beta not Official...

I give him Props for the Menu display and fonts.
But it needs a lot of fix with anything, sound, video and etc...

I just say that on this Beta no games can be play right on it. It stop, It crash and is laggie and Buggie! lol

But is a great advance too... I think..

O well

Props for further notice about this Project R13 by its original or Another interested "Coder"
But please Improve the "Emulator" in Gameplay, not just Menu Display...

Thanks!
PSPMAN90

what really need this emulator is to use a bios file instead that we would have to find ourself like gpsp, sega cd, ti-92......

   by gr8tlegend - 2008-05-26
 » Don't like

U Don't like it? Thats no suprise. Its a beta. Been waiting 4 it to work perfect 4 years. Here's an Idea why don't you make it yourself? instead of calling people lazy! maybe the people who make it are human and have something better 2 do than configure stuff 4 U . Ungrateful azz swine

   Re: Threatened - 2008-05-26
» wow i hate people like you

the fact is we CAN'T make it better. you're acting like you never criticized a game for being a little lackluster or not as good as you hoped. seriously, stfu.

   Re: sickofitall - 2008-05-27
 » re:

No, he is right. This is different than complaining about a game, because you have paid money for it. This is a personal program that the coders are creating, and I bet most of the people complaining here have not contributed one penny to help. Obviously they are working on, just like they said earlier, but they are still working on it. So quit the complaining and give these coders a break to finish it.
   by gr8tlegend - 2008-05-26
 » P.S

P.S this application is garbage , I will wait for the official , none of the games I wanted to play played on my psp

   by Lethal_NFS - 2008-05-26
 » Ughhhhh

Its been 6 months or so since the last release. That is a long time to improve the stabability of the emulator. Why even release this if its not better and may be worse? I expected more than some different icons and a buggier emulator after 6 months.

   Re: NeilR - 2008-05-26
 » UNOFFICIAL

You have no idea how long this has been worked on because it has nothing to do with the last release or the official developer. In fact, it's safe to assume that this particular beta hasn't been a wip for as long as you think.

   Re: UltimaArmorX - 2008-05-27
 » Can

we call it R1, please?

   Re: Foolmonkey - 2008-05-27

it actually is from StrmnNrmn and now you just look like a total idiot like i thought you were anyway. congratz

   Re: NeilR - 2008-05-28
 » @Foolmonkey

Read it again...

There's no question StrmnNrmn's code exists in the beta (both of them since there are now two). I was pointing out that there's no way of knowing how long Wally spent screwing around with it.
   by pspgamerau - 2008-05-26
 » Well

Considering that PSP Homebrew devs can't even get a solid version of MAME to run on the PSP with across the board support, I wouldn't get my hopes up about this either.

The last two great frontiers for emulation for the PSP are MAME and the N64.

I really wish developers would stop tweaking EMUs that already run 100% on the PSP fine and concentrate on the gear that the community wants that doesn't yet work properly

MAME and N64!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

   by frostbitehunter - 2008-05-26
» n64 isnt as easy as people think

ok n64 included a rumble pack addon and a mem pak addon to hold extremely large files.lotta n64 games were not compressed back then.including audio and it takes awhile to try to get it compressed enough to work flawless.each game that came out also had different scripting methods.this was one of the beginning of 3d engines keep in mind.project64 has come close but even they started way back and it tookk them ages.they only got one for the pc though.it requires alot of dll files and this and that.n64 is not simple so to get it working at all for the psp is a good breakthru

that is all.give these guys slack,i commend them for trying to emulate the hardest console to ever exist and the fact that it works at all.proves that there is hope.

suffice it to say but after about 3 years it seams as if Daedalus is still in it's alpha stages of testing cuz'.......:/ hasn't changed much i really think that StrmnNrmn need's more of a team to develop this one i mean I'm not *****ing about the emulator but c'mon man REALLY?

   by shrimpdude - 2008-05-26

I hope releasing this against StrmnNrmn's will won't kill the whole project.

so anyways, 20 bucks says its actually slower than the first release ;D

   by Aphex85 - 2008-05-27
 » Bla, bla, bla!

Well it's nice to see the usual 'crap' being given out to the dev's of this homebrew. Listen 'Kids' has it even gone through your thick heads that the reason this is taking so long is that all he gets for making this emu is ***** from people telling him 'Oh, it too slow' or 'it's not worth getting' or 'it's been three years since it's been out and it's still crap'. If all i got was a bunch of moany 'kids' betting it's *****ter that the last homebrew i created then i'd give up. Plus, this is done in His FREE TIME PEOPLE! It's not easy to keep coming up with bug fixes and i'm sure the dev has things he would like to do.
So Stop giving the guy ***** and show some respect, coz if he did stop you'd be F***ked.

» there is a much more stable R14 Beta

i recommend visiting www.strmnnrmn.com

on the home page the site owner 'CaptainMorgan4' has released his version of the R14 beta; another build of the program which he says is more stable than the one available here.

worth a shot!

I respect Strmnnrmn for what he has accomplished, something i coulnd never try to make!

but if he wants to give up, i just wish he would let us know!

 » Rantings

First off this is old *****ing news, this release actually came out about 2 months or so ago...

Secondly, I have the answer and solution to EVERYBODYS gripes. Here it is...

Money. Everyone want this thing to run great and be finished soon. I'm sure Strmn and crew have better ***** to do than make an awesome N64 Emulator for Free. So Here it is, We the people, as in everyone who wants to use this thing in its most perfect form should come to an agreement with Strmn and Co. We that want to use it donate something like a dollar or even two dollars (with everyone that wants to use this, that will be a very good amount) Strmn and Co agrees to give us monthy updates, work alot more on the project and gives us a estimated time of completion. At the end of completion its tested, if its working sufficiently for most ppl then Strmn and crew get all of the money that had been donated and end of story.

If Strmn himself is interested or anyone working on it is interested then please contact me as I am more than capable of puting such a work into progress and I am also anxioulsy awaiting a finished product as well.

jtcp.com@gmail.com

Anyone else who is in accord with this idea feel free to email me as well, lets get this moving ppl!!
Everyone here want an amazing N64 emulator and you guys (developers) shouldnt have to create it for free.

   Re: fungusinmymilk - 2008-05-27
 » maybe...

if it actually got StrnmNrmn of his but and back to making updates, id be willing to donate.

I'd pay $100 for a perfect(well neeaar perfect) emulaton of Jet Force Gemini On My psp! :p

I'm sorry... But I'll give credit to people who are actually DEDICATED to what they do..

People Like Dark_AleX, Ahman, NJ, Ruka, E, Notaz, ZX-81, Brunni, and more.

But this garbage where StrmnNrmn NEVER visits forums, gives updates like twice a year, and leaves everyone hanging and waiting for the next garbage release..

Well sorry, but he deserves the comments..

If ANYONE cooked a meal that tasted like ass, and said afterwards..

Well it's hard to cook Bald Eagle.. I have a life you know..

then they DESERVE all the criticism they get.

 » yeah, shut up kid.

you shouldn't be in this forums up until you learn to masturbate.

anyways, for the attention-deficit whiners out there, go and ask your parents to give you a hug.

do not use this page to rant about your shortcomings on life in the hope that you'll get noticed. i don't have to recognize you because first and foremost, I DON'T GIVE A PYGMY ***** ON YOU PEOPLE!

and here's some news for you: the developers DON'T GIVE A ***** ABOUT YOUR TWO CENTS! Nobody wants your rotten pennies so KEEP THAT TO YOURSELF YOU WHINING, FREE-RIDING LEECHES! THE GALL OF YOU PEOPLE WHINE WHEN YOU DON'T ACTUALLY PAY. IF YOU DON'T WANT TO WAIT THEN DO NOT EVER AND I MEAN, EEEEVVVVVEEEERRRRR, VISIT THIS PLACE!

to those who want to pay, i doubt the developers would accept that because that would tantamount to a promise of delivery which would then be a hassle for their own lives.

so why don't you take the earlier advice. DO IT YOURSELF. Oh, I get it, you can't because you're too dumb to do it. Your thick, air-filled skulls can't even learn straight and error-free english, it'll be something if you'll ever learn a computer language that doesn't blow up your peanut-sized brains.

well, since you can't do anything except whine, then, STFU!

   Re: Aphex85 - 2008-05-28
 » Hang on dude..

Just because Not everyone can programme does not mean there ''Thick''! I don't agree with the type of people that do whine and freeload in regards to this homebrew, they should be shuned. lol! but there are some here that repect a programmers life and are happy with how this is (slowly, but surly) working out. An update here and there just helps people understand where the project is going and if it's ended, thus you wouldn't get tarts like the folks above that whine like 13 school girls trying to have a period (cause all there freinds have and they feel left out!). LOL!

What if that rumor of him dying and then shortly after 'supposedly' commenting on his blog that he is ok IS actually false....(X-files theme music). Indeed this may seem far-fetched so I am expecting incoming arguments and so

Victory shall yet be mine!
