Based on a tip we picked up from Thomas k., it looks like the PSP Slim's hot-selling 1seg TV tuner attachment has been hacked to work on the PSP Phat. According to Thomas, he uncovered this possibility by way of a video demonstration and of a tutorial found on the web. We'll be posting the video first to give you an idea of how the hack looks:

Thomas was also kind enough to explain part of the tutorial, which was originally written in Japanese:

The tutorial says that we have to get the mentioned files from a dump of the firmware update (since in the phat PSP they are not installed) and throw in the flash0 memory. And the last file vshmain.prx should be hex edited to hack the "Network Update" icon on the XMB to activate the 1seg tunner.

While Thomas was unable to fully confirm the hack for himself (No tuner or air signals in Brazil), he stated that a fellow Brazilian living in Japan reports that the hack works, although the Phat has poorer reception than the Slim.

Our tipster further noted that he has also translated the Japanese 1seg hack tutorial into Brazilian Portuguese and posted it at the Brazilian Orkut community site. Those interested in checking out Thomas' full tutorial instructions can visit the site via the Read link provided below.

 » Hmmm

If its so easy.. that seems like a pretty big and obvious "F YOU" from Sony to longtime PSP owners.

Luckily since the purchase of my PSP, Sony has yet to receive a single dime out of my pocket for PSP games and/or accessories.

"F YOU" too Sony

 » ahhh yes!

This is US relevant because in 2009 analogue
will be no more and digital broadcasting will
take over.

All of those old analogue only TV's will get
junked for Digital only TV's.

At this point the 1Seg tuner will work in
the US. :)

ok, no... it's not the PSP Fat. It's the PSP 1001. And there's no such thing as a PSP Slim either. That's be the PSP 2000. Freeplay's right. You can't correct something that's not right to begin with. That's like if someone draws a chupacabra, and you yell at them for making its nose the wrong way... Because the chupacabra is not real, you can't say that he drew it wrong. Thus, it's not a Phat, and it's not a fat either. One can choose what they call it.

I call my PSP the PSP Obese. As opposed to its sister, the PSP Anorexic. pwned.

 » poor lil guy

PSP Obese is a little harsh isn't it? You could just call it the PSP COE (compulsive over eater). I mean, you don't want to get it angry, do you?

   Re: GW2 - 2007-10-19
 » but you see

im right because fat is a word, and phat is not. the new psp 2000 is commonly referred to as the slim because it is thinner then the old psp. the slim nickname led to the fat, nickname of the old psp, which is significantly larger. so eat my feces.

 » Names, Words...

I wonder if your names are words that 'exist'
because every thing you call a psp is a name for it.
A name has no obligation to 'mean' anything.
The Scene has given the PSP's a range of names. so you are free to chose.

   Re: SomeGuy - 2007-10-20
» you have a strong grasp there :P

phat is slang, and it has been adopted for the non-slim psp but you can use either or anything else you like nothing is official.

p.s. STFU N00b (don't be offended they ain't real words and have no meaning)

The "k." in "Thomas k." (in the first line) should be capitalized.

 » Will try it out....

Sweet. I live in Japan.
Been waiting for this, since I missed out on getting a one-seg cell phone.

BTW, wicked_insider, just because the US is going digital, it doesn't mean that 1 seg products will work. They need to be broadcasting a 1 seg signal, which of course, there have been no announcements of. Plus, the signal is just OK, until you start picking up any kind of speed while you're in a vehicle. Not too sure if that would be a hit back home.

Analog TV's will not get junked. Stores like Best Buy have only just recently decided to stop selling them.
There are still millions upon millions of analog TV's out there. Not to mention the people who have cable and satellite receivers capable of receiving digital transmissions and still have analog outputs.

» Quick tutorial for the hack

Tested on 3.71-2 M33

From the M33 "NEWPSARDUMPER" and 3.71 Eboot get these files:

F0:/vsh/resource/oneseg_plugin.rco
F0:/vsh/module/oneseg_launcher_plugin.prx
F0:/vsh/module/oneseg_plugin.prx
F0:/kd/usb1seg.prx

and F0:/vsh/module/vshmain.prx, which shoud be hex edited on 0003F5C0 from "00" to "1E"

Now copy all the files to your flash0, and it's done.

Remember... you take full responsability for your actions.

   Re: jbondsr - 2007-10-19
 » Way to flash.....

How do we copy these to flash0?

I'm at 3.71 M33-2 and 1.50 kernel version 2.

Never used NEWPSARDUMPER before..... :_(
(Also, I don't have a Pandora Battery.....)

   Re: Thomas.k - 2007-10-20
 » ....

NEWPSARDUMPER , put it on GAME folder and the official sony 3.71 EBOOT on MS root. Then run the program with square button.

You can copy to flash0 via USB on the RECOVERY menu, but beware: there are some statements that using the USB function to write the flash0 memory could cause a endless loop, you should do some research on that in the forums before any attempt (me and my friends used this method without trouble).

As a alternative the japanese blog author said that you can use "Extended Pandora Bootmenu v0.84", but for me the method was not so clear.

   Re: jbondsr - 2007-10-20
 » Still a bit lost....

Which folder in F0?
I finally got the right size file of vshmain.prx after using NEWPSARDUMPER, and I edited it in a hex editor.
But I am still unclear as where to put it under F0.
I went in under the Recovery Menu, but I didn't see similar folders like the ones that the files I took from the dump came from.

 » non related question

when is daedalus r13 coming?? its like 4 weeks overdue lol

   by c10udstryfe - 2007-10-22
 » hopeless

if the tuner could only be hacked to change reception to analog then it would have been good outside of japan...

iv tried promoting this way before this was published here but due to the limitations of the 1segs market outside of japan, no one seems interested to go deeper with the tuner hack....
