2.01 Downgrader

Wow, a little over a week ago we saw a "Hello World" application emerge on all 2.0-2.80 PSP's with the newly discovered and exploited libtiff vulnerability. In the past week we have seen both a 2.71 downgrader, 2.80/2.81 decrypter, and a new eLoader (v0.9.8), all of which happened within days of each other!

Today, the Noobz team have released a 2.0/2.01 downgrader that utilizes the new tiff exploit which allows them the necessary access to complete such a task. Even though 2.01 was released roughly a year ago, I'm sure there are still those who may benefit out of this knowing that this is a safe downgrader and hasn't been reporting any bricks so far.

As always, downgrading always has a risk of bricking your PSP if you fail to follow the directions properly, so please use this downgrader at your own risk. So, for those who didn't update to 2.71 to downgrade, you can successfully downgrade by following these steps as listed in the readme file -

  1. First you need eLoader 0.98 or later (get it from www.noobz.eu).
  2. Install eLoader, and make sure that it is working for you by loading some nice safe homebrew (e.g. Squarez).
  3. Next unzip this downgrader package onto your memory stick.  You should end up with the EBOOT.PBP file copied to /psp/game/201downgrader/EBOOT.PBP.
  4. Also copy the v1.5 Update EBOOT to /psp/game/update/EBOOT.PBP.
  5. Now run the downgrader via eLoader.  Assuming that your PSP passes the safety checks, you should be given a menu of options.
  6. To downgrade, you need to select the 'set to v1.00' option (the Circle button).
  7. This will fake your PSP to version 1.00.  Once you've completed the process, you can run the v1.5 Update EBOOT, directly from your PSP's Game menu.
  8. Note that when the v1.5 Update is 99% complete, it will display an error message that it has 'failed - contact Sony customer support, error code FFFFFFFFF'.
  9. This is OK!  Just power off your PSP, and reboot it. You then get a blue screen, saying "Press O to reset your settings" in several languages.  Press O, and your PSP reboots again - voila! You now have a v1.5 PSP.
  10. Note that, before you install the 1.5 Update, your PSP is still really a v2.0 or v2.01 PSP, but it will claim to be v1.0.  If you've changed your mind about downgrading, you can choose to rerun the downgrader, and restore your old version number, with either the Cross or Square button, as appropriate.
  11. Alternatively, if you changed your mind about running the downgrader, you can just press Triangle to exit without changing anything.

why do people brag about first posts instead of posting a relevant post about the article?!

» Why would they be working on a 2.01...

I mean, it's great for people who have ABSOLUTELY NO WAY OF UPGRADING TO 2.6, but some ta-082 people are still stuck here with 2.71s desperately waiting for the new version of the eLoader. :( Please don't forget about us.

Also, sorry if this message comes out with me sounding like a *****, I don't mean to be mean.

It's impossible to downgrade a TA-082 is it not as its not possible to go below firmware 2.00 or something along those lines.

 » This is great!

It's great to hear everyone is joining 1.5 PSPs! In the end, Sony will just stop adding security fixes XD

So is this one step closer towards 2.80 Homebrew?

 » Aren't there bigger priorities?

Why in the world would someone not be able to upgrade to 2.6? More importantly, why is this being released before the TA-082 stuff? Get that e-loader done :P

I don't know how anyone can label this as useless because the more options we have the better. If someone has a 2.01 Psp, they no longer have to upgrade to 2.6 or 2.7 in order to be able to downgrade to 1.5. Keep up the good work guys :)

 » The Day

I made a poem for 2.8 I call it The Day: I cannot wait, till they create, a downgrader, for 2.8. Poor 2.8, its sucking great, which is the reason, i cannot wait. That glorious day, when Noobz crew say, todays the day we all downgrade! The president of sony, crys in his room, with a PSP, running homebrew. He yells out loud, so all can hear, they exploited 2.8, get me a beer.

» cool for those still with a 2.01

at least no need to have a downdater folder with 1.5 firmware dump, it's like the mph downgrader with 2.01 compatibility

that poem expresses my fealings too. good job, you should email it to noobz and sony. see what they say.

 » but

why even bother a person on 2.01 could have just upgraded to 2.71 and then downgraded. from my eyes there's no need for this app

by Yes but no (Unregistered) - 2006-09-09

21: I see what you mean but if you are a 2.01 it would be by far safer by this method.

 » Thanx

Thanks #18 Ill submit it to Sony cause im sure Noobz read all the comments here anyway lol. Ill post there reply!

   by Glennlh (Unregistered) - 2006-09-09

Since this downgrades 2.01 the same way it downgrades 2.00 using MPHs downgrder we could of downgraded this with the GTA Exploit

   by fangdevil - 2006-09-09

because u dont need ILLEGAL firmware dumps (in some cases) u can just use a legal update file. making it easier.

read noobz.eu it says gta could'nt do it

   by Mosquito - 2006-09-09
 » 2.80

Stop asking for a 2.80 downgrader!
If you were too stupid to upgrade, you don't have any rights to ask, just wait :p

   by Fanjita - 2006-09-09
 » why was it released?

Simple : it already existed, we've found it useful within the team, and it's safer than the higher FW downdaters, mostly because it makes more safety checks, and it's simpler so there's less room for mistake.

Did it take time away from 2.80 work? No. Besides, it's no-one's place to try to dictate what we work on at any given time.

Is it useless? Well, many people like to upgrade to 2.0, then back down to 1.5, after using the downdater. This makes that process a little more user-friendly.

At the end of the day, if it helps someone out, then great. If it doesn't, then that's fine too, it cost close to nothing to produce.

» Once 00km gets the TA-082 process underway, that will be huge. Then every new PSP on store shelves can be downgraded. :)

Fanjita is totally right, this thing isn't useless! After I downgraded my 2.71 psp I immediately upgraded it to 2.0. Then I used this tool to return back to 1.5 so I could have a clean firmware, not a 1.50 dump... I know I could just have used the existing mph downgrader, but this tool seemed like a safe thing to use... and it worked perfectly for me!!!
So, thanks for this and much respect for your work!!!
