3.30 OE Custom FW update: PSOne emulation! UPDATE

A couple of days ago, Dark_AleX mentioned that he had problems (UP failure) with his PlayStation Portable (PSP) and is still waiting for a new one. This means no 3.30 OE custom firmware yet. There's really no big deal in that, when you really think about it. What we say 'round here is you got to brick some in order to crack some.

Anyway, there's a new update regarding DAX's development on the new custom firmware. In our last post, we mentioned that should it ever come out, there will be "no new big innovations." However, we found out today that could not be entirely the whole case.

The beans were spilled by coder Mathieulh in a conversation with PSPGen's MaGiXieN, and according to him, while the firmware will not have any new big innovations, users might be delighted to know that a PlayStation 1 (PSOne) emulator has been integrated. The coder added that this was accidentally discovered when they learned that it is possible to regulate the loading time of PSOne ISOs. (The following is quoted from PSPGen, translated via weblator.)

Previously, in the old versions, the speed of the loading was done with identical compared to the PS1. Today, it will be possible, via an option, to choose between the original mode and an accelerated loading! We benefit from the occasion to say to you that the 3.30OE is in good way and that, DarK_Alex not having still a PSP, it still does not have there a precise date envisaged.

So there. Let's just wait and hope that the new custom firmware will finally be made without any more bricked PSP units from our well-loved homebrew developers.

UPDATE: Thanks to QJ blogger Pranav, we've been able to shed more light on just what kind of surprises 3.30 OE Custom Firmware will bring. The surprise would be in the emulator and not the emulator itself. Apparently, the surprise is a faster PS1 game loading using the new disc loading option. With that feature, you could expect to have faster loading speeds in PS1 games.

The disc loading option is actually included by Sony in their latest firmware and since Dark_AleX is currently hard at work with 3.30 OE, this feature would likely be included in his latest custom firmware. Keep checking us out for updates.

I own both DS and PSP.
I used to rank PSP lower because it was so f***ing boring before Dark Alex came.

Now, I choose my PSP over the DS. Because of the features that make the PSP so much better than what Sony would have done. Anyways, Sony has a long track record of limiting EVERYTHING.

PSP has so much potential, it was just sad how much of it was going to waste before DaX showed up.

i agree: i illegally downloaded a few games for psp. yes i did it. after spitting most of them out, i bought field commander, killing zone, monster hunter, NFS most wanted and sid maiers pirates. i invested 230 %u20AC in sony and the game developers and i feel good with it, because the games are just very good and i knew what i bought.

when i imagine to buy the first five games, i intended to, ... god i would hate sony and never buy a game again. 45 EUR is way too much to buy a handheld-game just for its nice packaging and those well-organized "reviews", which are just another industry fake. i mean, do you really believe in ign/gamespot/game-magazines?
do you really believe in blogs?
its all about (guerilla) marketing. there goes the money in. not in the dev of the game.

this is why game development has become a very tough market for programmers/developers/designers/analyzers/etc.
its just for more profit. more profit. more profit. ergo
its bad paid. its minimal time to dev. it stuck.
investors want to keep the costs low, the result are mostly bad games, that should have been 1 year more in development, to become "okay". as you can see, this is short-minded. nobody is willing to pay 50 %u20AC for a game, which is just few bucks worth. and 90 out 100 games are definitely crap. EXPENSIVE crap. this is not the pirates fault. its the capital's fault.
and if 90 out of 100 games are crap, I WANT TO TEST. i am gonna buy, if the product is okay. but if its just a lie, i wont buy.

hackers heighten the value of a console. i know 2 people who bought a psp for its homebrew development and its hardware (screen,etc.). and wh0ja, they bought games, too. they play good ol' snes games besides that.

nds-fans:
i cannot remember that the psp-sales were ever over ds-sales. but i predict you somethin:
your system dies before the psp is grown up to full strength. because of us and of sony seeing reason.

I bet yr NDS has flashme, passme, m3, r4 or ds xtream on slot 1 bay n u dun play downloaded roms? I dun think so. PSP sold so well bcoz of all the dedicated coder. yes i know DS has homebrew but it is no where near as advanced as PSP homebrew. the reason psp has lots of homebrew because it natively accepts memory sticks which are a standard in storage and it can be coded in familiar languages like C++. DS also has a non-flashable firmware so theres no hope for anything there. and the DS has very limited power and memory since it wasn't designed for stuff like playing videos and music or photos.

If the PSP isn't working anymore, and he is waiting on a new one (regardless of how it doesn't work), it is currently bricked. Bricked just means it can't work anymore at the moment, just sits there. Some people can fixed psps that are bricked because of firmware flashing, and some can fix psps when they broke due to hardware failure,....so if he's waiting for a new psp...its A BRICK YOU IDIOT

I think what they mean is that it's not directly emulating the game on other firmwares, it's just making the code playable through the psp's pops plugin. Now, it's an actual emulator, meaning it can do real emulator-type things like speed it up.

I'm not exactly sure though, but I think QJ is overreacting a bit :)

Guys, DaX is a PSP legend, if you prefer DS then shut the hell up. We people are fair-minded and as a poster abouve said, DaX is killing PSP sales and that its putting the DS in its place, I laugh at you. The DS has homebrew too. I bet soon itll also have CFW.

If you feel like dissing D_A, then go f*** urself. D_A is a respectable member/contributor the to PSP community, if you dont wanna give him mad props the get the hell off this site. QJ is a place for news so that people can stay informed not, bust someone who has spent a year + keeping us happy.

Well said! Just one correction though, the DS already has custom firmware, in the form of FlashMe. It includes a few things, like a sort of recovery mode and skipping the health/safety text, like the OE firmwares. The downside is that you need to short a connection on the inside of the DS to install it.
