Holux Slim with PSP - Image 1PSP owners who want to maximize the power of their PSP by using Sony's portable gaming powerhouse for every application and external device imaginable can now have something new to try out.

PSP coder deniska managed to put together a GPS set-up using a PSP Slim, in conjunction with GPS devices such as Holux GPSlim 236-240 and M1000-1200.

The set up involves using a cable similar to the the one used by the PSP's remote accessory cable (the cable with control buttons), and deniska was kind enough to provide a diagram on which inner cable gets connected to certain parts of the PSP's remote cable accessory jack.

You'll also need the following prx module to execute the DIY project.

Go! Cam models - Image 1

Back in the day, in some backwater places, only the cool kid gets to have a gaming system. Today, it's either you've got the latest high-end console or you prefer sticking to retro. In other words, video games can almost measure your machismo. People in Amsterdam have a similar idea - the PSP in the Netherlands is a fashion statement.

Some models during the Amsterdam Fashion Week walked the ramp carrying PSP units with "Go! Cam" attachments. We do not know if Sony is behind this, but we can say that a portable 1.3 megapixel camera with a microphone, 180-degree rotating lens, and huge capacity that can hold 40,000 images and about 2 1/2 hours of video is very sexy. Oh, the models are pretty hot too.

So they're all outta GPS?

Enterprising PSP owners may want to put their heads on the shoulder of a Sony Exec and cry, especially since the GPS attachment for the PSP is selling very briskly. Finding one is certainly more difficult than some would bargain for. If you've got a Japanese PSP that is begging for a new enhancement, then you may want to check Play-Asia for some goodies.

Our trained ninja hamster spies snuck deep into the headquarters of Play-Asia and have recently uncovered that the importers are currently selling GPS Receiver units. Their selling price, sans shipping, is US$ 59.99. Of course, what you intend to do with it if you don't live in Japan is beyond us, but if you're visiting there or live in the area, this might be a good chance for you to grab one if you can't find one in the immediate vicinity.

You may want to use an actual map with the system though, just to be sure. Happy global positioning!

We all like mods. Heck, they make life more interesting for us, and for our PSPs. But how serious are you exactly? If there was a mod-boy award to be given out, would you be in the running? We all know how risky the mod business is. It ain't for the faint-hearted. You gotta have a lot of faith, first, in the developer, and second, in your own skills.

Well, Joe Stranger sure had a lot of both, and if there was a mod-boy award, he definitely would be in the running for it. How come? Just check out this compilation vid of all his PSP mods. He's got the blue WiFi LED, the blue Memory Stick access trigger LEDs, the analogic joystick add-on, and the Xbox jewel complete with blue LED blings. And you know what the best part is? His PSP didn't end up like some Frankenstein. Now that's talent. Good job, dude!

Sony stops at nothing when it comes to marketing gimmicks. We are already aware of the GPS and camera capability that will come soon on PSP -- something we think that Sony does only to make the PSP more appealing even to non-gamers. Consider, for example, the golf players. They won't normally buy a PSP just so they can play Hot Shots Golf, but the PSP's ability to actually provide all the golf data that they need in a real Japanese golf course may be indispensable to them. The PSP then turns into a personal golf assistant.

In Homestar: 21st Century Navigator, the GPS lets you get night sky data. Again, this function may appeal to stargazers and astronomy hobbyists and not just to players. But about the most gaming use we can find from the GPS system can be found in Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops. The GPS function allows you to take advantage of Wi-Fi hotspots to earn powered-up bonus characters that you can use in the Comrade system. Then again, Konami has mentioned that the GPS can be useful in other fields as well, such as education and services.

These "other" uses will more likely help those who are out on the road since the automatic route guidance will tell you how to get to a location which you can use both in the car, and when walking on foot. Moreover, anyone can take advantage of the console's wide screen that allows you to view maps in multiple ways.

The GPS is one thing. The PSP is another. Put these two together and you got something original, and it's a laudable effort from Sony. But the question is: will it sell?

PSP Camera

Back in May, a funny little attachment which appeared to be a camera was seen on top of a PSP at the E3. Last month, pictures showed the same attachment, along with its cousin, the GPS receiver, was again found floating around on the internet. And now...they're official and soon to be for sale.

At the moment, the PSP camera has finally been unveiled and is set to hit retail stores in Japan by November 2, 2006 for ¥5000 (around $ 43) a pop. Dubbed as the "Chotto Shot" ("Little Shot"), the camera will come with its own software and a carrying case. It can capture still images at either 480x272 or 640x480 resolutions, while videos can be recorded at 480x272 at 30 frames per second for as long as 15 seconds. Using the software "Chotto Shot Edit", you can then apply borders, effects, decorations, background music, and captions to your photos and videos among other things, and all on your PSP. You can then share your pictures and footage with friends via ad hoc mode.

As for the GPS unit, it will retail for ¥ 6000 (around $51) by December 7th but will not come with any software.
