Daedalus R11 - Image 1

Halfway there. Getting Daedalus R11 off the ground and into a handheld has a lot to do with memory saving and optimization, StrmnNrmn revealed a week ago. Well, one week later, he's been thumbing down those screws hard, and the results show:
  • Streamlining the N64-format-to-PSP-format texture conversion process has halved the memory resources required for each texture, StrmnNrmn reports. Slightly faster than the previous approach, too.
  • A "very simple one-line change" to the texture cache code makes the cache "100% leak-free" and a surprising 4-5% speedup.
  • Last significant change to report is that he set a hard limit to how much memory the texture cache used. "This change means that if the limit is ever reached, I just display white textures until some texture memory is freed up a little later. Previously Daedalus would just keep allocating RAM until it ran out of memory and crashed, so the new solution is much nicer."
With these changes, StrmnNrmn says he "can permanently allocate 8MB for the Expansion Pak, and not worry about running out of memory." And also, with a few things left to do, he hopes to see R11 fly by the weekend.

Thanks 420tongboker420 for the tip!

We still need speed before compatibility...you're just gonna be even more pissed off if he makes a bunch of games work and they only run at 2-5fps anyways. Mario 64 is one of the easier n64 games to emulate, and it still doesn't have full speed. Calm down...he can do whatever he wants...its his emulator...dumbass

PSPupdates has been glitches and filling in other names from registered users into that box randomly. Sometimes when I sign in, it will give me someone else's name. It has nothing to do with a shared computer...its a site glitch.

 » no hope

there is not hope, n64 will never ever, EVER be emulated properly in the PSP. Here is why, to show you all I'm not trash-talking.
-32-bit RGBA textures are not fully supported by the "video chipset" of PSP.
-GCC's -O3s are null.
-The VFPU code for TnL would take years to develop.
-There is never going to be enough VRAM space, face it, even if you allow infinite cache storage on mem stick, it would generate slowdown. The RAM is *****ed up. Sorry folks.

   Re: chameleon789 (Unregistered) - 2007-04-30
 » huh?

*- 32-bit RGBA textures are not fully supported by the "video chipset" of PSP.

The N64 doesn't even use 32-bit RGBA textures. If a game did use them then support for them would be hard coded into the the game, the designers would have to convert them into N64 compatible textures through game-code. Not only that, there's a 4096-byte limit on a single texture.

*- The VFPU code for TnL would take years to develop.

the PSP has a dedicated programmable T+L processor. The coding wouldn't be nearly as extensive as you claim.

*-GCC's -O3s are null.

From R10 blog :
[^] Finally got code compiling with -O3 optimisation flag in GCC.

*-There is never going to be enough VRAM space, face it, even if you allow infinite cache storage on mem stick, it would generate slowdown.

Yes, but there are always ways around that, like compressing / streaming textures.

I never got this question answered, what is the configurable deadzone? is it good to be set high, or low? Should my memory stick be full, half full, or empty? Does it slow down the emulator, or speed it up depending on the ocnfiguration? Any help appreciated

   Re: ... (Unregistered) - 2007-04-30
 » ...

Unless you characters in the games you play are slightly moving in one direction or the other without you touching anything, you don't need to worry about the deadzone at all. How much you have on your memory stick doesn't matter, and speed is only affected by the configuration.

 » SANDWICH UPDATE

WASTE OF POST!!!!

for those of you interested......
QJ how about offering an minute by minute account of making a sandwich.

SANDWICH UPDATE R7

For those of you who don't know Loveless is making a sandwich to eat while he plays with his psp. instead of eating a sandwich he once made once when he beat milons secret castle on the nes he decided to make a new sandwhich from the ground up for his psp!

Loveless reported that hes made Real progress with his sandwich today. Some of the improvements include:

Switched from Rye bread to Whole wheat (providing fewer calories)

Switched from deli sliced turkey to Shaved turkey (hoping to include some sort of smoked flavor in further releases)
switched to "Plate Support" to not drop anymore crumbs

Added lettuce and tomato..

And Improvements in Cheese support.
while American cheese works dynamically now, hoping to support some sort of Pepper Jack in future releases.

Fixes include: Threw out mayo on account of "TEXTURE LEAKING ISSUES".
refrigeration of deli meat(no more stomach aches!)
potato chip support increases consumption by 10%!!!
napkin support to handle cleanup.

Loveless made note that while most of the work on his sandwich is complete he is confident by the time R9 is released it'll be "even tastier"

he is looking to complete the sandwhich sometime in the next 3 months

BE SURE TO CHECK PSP UPDATES FOR MORE INFO TOMORROW!!! WORD IS HE MIGHT INCLUDE A PICKLE!

ANYONE READING THIS>>> This is now posted in my qj LETS BUMP IT TO 500 and make it the top story!! Look for tag : Loveless
