Over on Acidmods, l0rdnic0 has released a spiffy new modification for the PSP that enables the user to input text and numbers on the PSP using an Xbox 360 chatpad.

Here's a description of the application and its current status:

Hey all talk a look at my Microsoft Xbox360 Chatpad connected to my PSP Phat and Slim. Thanks to Jean over at ps2dev.org and this project that he developed we can all have nice keyboards connected to our PSP's.

My PSP’s are running CFW 4.01 M33-2, a special version of piKey and a custom flash on the Chatpad. Text input is a breeze and it works with the Sony OSK (on screen keyboard) and the Danzeff OSK under AFKIM. It does not work with PSPWrite and other ZX-81 applications because they are not compiled to do so but Jean is working on a compatible drive to make them work natively.

Here is the current status as taken from ps2dev.org (Jean) -

I'm working on:

  • scancode advanced driver (pikey input driver)
  • recompilation of most famous homebrews to enable openKeyboard (direct or through pikey stub) support
  • pikey output driver to fake PSPrint presses (to use on dosbox and in other older hb)
  • pspirkeyb fake driver
Below is a video of the modification in action. Feel free to check out the source link for additional information on the modification, especially if you're interested in replicating it for yourself.

now that is slick!!!

If all the buttons are mapped to it like it looks, then someone could also use this as an external controller for the psp as well?

I have often wanted to be able to set the psp on a desk like that and then just hold a controller to play it. Makes extended night shifts a little more bearable.

It's a cool idea, but i'm not entirely sure how useful that really is...I mean, c'mon, what's the big benefit from carrying around a WIRED keyboard with your psp. I'm not going to want to. Maybe you all think it's a great idea so go mod some stuff and make it work. This is just another shot in the dark for a mod. I could see it very useful if you don' t have a laptop or a cell phone with a qwerty keyboard built in and you do a lot of mobile web surfing, but other than that? Nah i'll pass. Not really a huge breakthrough. The idea has already been brought to the table with those little fold up IR keyboards, although the tech only works on the phat since they dropped IR on the later models. I really wish that Sony would have purchased a different wireless chipset that incorperated Bluetooth. We have cellphones doing remarkable things at a quarter the size of the PSP, yet Sony furnishes video out? Whyyyy? That's just a bell and whistle that most people will never even use more than once for just a quick 'Cool!' They still haven't released an update to the firmware for the older phat's to charge on USB, so we have to do it with Custom Firmware. They got the picture with themes, so what the hell? I know the PSP is primarily a gaming device like the DS, but look what all the DS came with: Simple and small, Incorperated a touch screen, It actually has a microphone, It's backwards compatible with older Advance carts, It's CHEAPER, They aimed it at all age groups (although i'd say the advertising targets adults most of the time), it's wireless (but it does suck I hear), it still uses solid state memory, and most importantly it isn't getting freakin updates every month just to play games. I'm not a fanboy, i'm not preaching to you. I own a PSP and I think it's one of the greatest could be's of all time. I could also honestly care less about pirating games, but I am running a CF. I do it because of the homebrew scene making things possible that Sony didn't even try to do. Streaming Internet radio stations with PSPRadio is awesome. Playing all my old NES, SNES, and Genesis games is awesome. Making the damn thing use the brightest possible screen when I was in Iraq under a thin material tent during mid-day so I could even see the screen (without being plugged in) was awesome. In Car GPS and Software in a bundle would have been awesome. The Camera? Not really digging plopping a bulky attatchment to the top just to take pictures and video (Not to mention pricey.) Memory Card prices were competively priced when the UMD idea came about. The games could have been put on solid state memory cards, and they could have ditched the whole proprietary disc format and beefed up the portability options or just slimmed it down. They really missed the ball on this whole portable all in one device thing they were going for.

» You don't know anything about hardware do ya...

Of course it's wired, do you know how much work it would be to build a homebrew wireless lik like bluetooth?
Much more than just using the serial port, that's how much.

And the PSP Phat requires a HARDWARE mod to charge via USB, there's no way to gey around that with firmware.

PSP is backwards compatible too, with PSOne, a stationary console, DS is just compatible with older portable consoles.

DS can't handle other than none and WEP security, that's why its wireless sucks.

Firmware updates kepps the PSP alive, without them the PSP would be dead by now.

There you go the PSP is backwards compatible with older STATIONARY Nintendo consoles.

Switching memory cards really wears down the connectors, just like on the NES. Optical discs such as UMDs solve that problem.

 » Argh, add a #¤%+@£$ Edit button!!!

Where it says "lik" in the first centence it's supposed to be "link".

"Gey" should be "Get".

#¤%+@£$...
