Evan Wilson, analyst for Pacific Crest Securities - Image 1Pacific Crest Securities analyst Evan Wilson took a look into the future by saying that Microsoft and Nintendo will be rolling out new consoles in two year's time. He expects the video game industry to peak around 2010 and the demand for new hardware will be needed by the end of both the Xbox 360's and the Wii's life cycles.

Wilson explained his prediction by saying:

We believe that peak industry sales will occur in 2010, given that Microsoft will likely introduce its next console that year and Nintendo will likely launch before then.

He also predicted that 2010 will spell the time for new handheld hardware for both Nintendo and Sony as the life cycles for both the DS and the PlayStation Portable should be ending around that time.

In a related story found on GamesIndustry.biz, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe's David Reeves expects that the PlayStation 3 will have a ten year cycle due to the built-in hard drive and the ability to upgrade the console firmware.

 » What!?

This guy has to be kidding!? So in 2 years, I have to buy new consoles again! I have to get a new DS, PSP, and Wii!

   Re: raggedjimmi - 2008-02-14
 » -

Uh... DS and PSP came out 4 years ago. 2 years time we'll have a new one. 5-7 years is the running figure for new consoles.
You must be very young!

   Re: Shatterdome - 2008-02-15
 » Indeed....

pretty much since nintendo the average time before a newer/better console came out was 4-5 years....this is nothing new and in my mind is expected, as in 4-5 years technology takes some very great leaps...

This guy is clearly a moron, all the current gen consoles and the PSP have upgradable firmware, why would he single out the PS3.

   Re: mysterysword - 2008-02-14
 » .

The PS3 is getting close to running the "Hello World" script. Also, the PS3's sales will jump soon because of the PS3 exclusive games (like Final Fantasy XIII). The PS3 will become the next PSP eventually, and completely hackable...

   Re: AkiraPsychic - 2008-02-14
 » ^

You are most likely mistaken, the PSP was capable of executing code within the firmware itself, whereas this is run using a game, unless we start writing our own firmware module for PS3 this seem unlikely at best. btw, your message had no relevance to my post.

 » hmmm

its not dat hard to believe, PSP and the DS r already being pushed to its limits, andbesides dat, handhelds arent shudnt to last dat long, obviously bcz of the downscaled processing power.

the WII (dont own one btw) surprises me. how it managed to flourish amongst the other powerhouses. probably bcz it was aimed for the mass public, but even they will adapt to the wii pretty soon, and demand more frm it, which it isnt capable of. the motion sensing appeal wont last very long.

the 360 too will b pushed to its limit early next year if not, mayb even this year. dat and along with the fact dat the PC's next gen hardware will b able to beat it in the blink of an eye makes me think how it will last for a decade.

the ps3 was probably singled out bcz its capable of so much more. developers r adapting to the Cell processor, once they r mature enough, they too can implement wii-like motion sensing in games, even better graphics and so much more. but i doubt if it will last 10 years. didnt sony say dat the ps3 can hav additional peripheral's in the future? if dat happens, then mayb it will last 10 years

PS: i dont own any of the consoles besides the DS and the PSP. so dont call me a fanboy

   Re: raggedjimmi - 2008-02-14

Such a silly comment deserves you being labled a fanboy.

Handhelds DO last long. Look at the GB (10 years) and the GBA (8 years, still going now infact). It's got frig all to do with processor power - hasn't the DS beating the PSP proved that it isn't about power but good, quality games? This is true for consoles too.

And the PS3 will never be able to do "Wii like motion abilities" since it has no IR bar. There is no fixed point to get a triangulated spacial measurement. It's just gyroscopes on the PS3.
The Wii flourishes because it has mighty fine games on it. Just measure up the ratings of the super popular Mario Galaxy and Twilight Princess. Isn't Galaxy 2nd only to Ocarina of Time as the best game ever?

Oh and it isn't "dat", it's "that".

Sorry I just look at things logically. I love my PSP and I prefer the PS3 over a 360 but I'm just realistic. I also don't see the PS3 overtaking 360 in sales.

its more of a reply to raggedjimmi...ur comparing psps grpahics to DS graphics..your not serious are you!

oh by the way..this motion sensor thing that people are sayin PS3 copied form the WII...ps1 had motion sensors...so i dont know where these people are going with all that sh^t...and the WII flourishes...im guessing u play SUper smash bros with ur freinds all the time.. yea i own a ps3 too im not making fun of ya :P im jus saying..the psp is bettter than the ds any time day year month..lol u get the idea

 » Just Not Right

I mean the Wii came out last year. Was it only supposed to last 3 years? The DS might have an upgrade because it's been out for long, but the PSP shouldn't have an update because SONY just came out with the PSP Slim. The DS shouldn't upgrade either because they just came out with new colors of the DS lite.

 » Yep...

You're going to have to buy the blu-ray version of those machines.

   Re: yworob - 2008-02-15
» At least the new Xbox will have a blu-ray drive.

In two years the technology available for a new console will be way better than what is in the PS3. The new Xbox should be much more powerful than the PS3 and I am sure its gonna cost a lot. Hopefully they will learn from the mistakes they made in designing the 360 so they can actually make some money on the consoles this time. If they have a new Halo game as a launch title Im sure they wont have any problem selling out. Plus they are talking the end of 2010 which is closer to 3 years away.

This analyst is on crack. The systems just came out, and just a couple years later they release new consoles? Nuh-uh, hell no.

   Re: RexNox - 2008-02-14
 » I disagree...

Sony has already stated that there are better and faster BR drives in the works. This means, bigger and badder games for Sony...if their competitors wait too long not only will they be lost in this gen (as the Wii is a glorified PS2 and the 360 is about to become dated) but probably (keyword here is probably) the next couple generations.

Or, as my friend would say, "the haves are getting better at it and so are the have-nots".

   Re: Shatterdome - 2008-02-15
» go look at the history of consoles...

it's always been 4-5 years between new systems....

   Re: Billie - 2008-02-15
 » @RexNon

I'm not trying to start any flame wars, but it annoys me when people compare BIGGER, FASTER drives + bigger badder games. We all know that it's the creativity of the developer, and the fun factor that can equate to badder games.

And seriously....if this weren't true then the Wii wouldn't be 1st, and you were the one who said it was just a glorified PS2 right?

 » He's an imbecile

How could nintendo change their consoles when they still can't ship enough for the demand (not even 2 years before they "should" pop up their new console).

Also, for M$, yes, they could release a new console around 2010, like everyone would thing, this would make M$ loose so much money that they couldn't say they made profits in all those years, but it would totally destroy (or gift) the PS3. Destroy if the industry follow M$, and gift the ps3 if the industry don't wanna move this fast (they just paid for unreal engine, can't they do 2 games with it? lol). But I'd say that the industry would not go with M$... Maybe small fry devs who want some glory, but no big time studio. Studios invested a lot for this gen, they need to make more games per console.

Finally, I'd say this guy is really wierd. lol. I wonder if he can predict wich color will be his skin when he check in the mirror next time, lol.

Anyway, for M$ it's possible, without any good chances.

   Re: Shatterdome - 2008-02-15
 » Thing is...

It is not like MS or Sony will be changing the technology that much...

This gen took so much investment in time and money as it was the first time that consoles have been multi-threaded......xbox "720" will be running the same technology, just with more memory and faster GPU/CPU clock speeds and more cores......so all of the game engines will be easly upgraded as the main hurdle of learning to program for multiple core systems will be over. Having a game engine run on 3 X 3.2 ghz cores and enabling it to use 6 X 6.2 ghz cores is not a huge deal....

 » My take

New consoles come out every 5-7 years so *shrugs*. Nothing new here.

So long as they're backwards compatible and KEEP backwards compatible I'll be happy. Oh and I won't be buying games if their prices keep going up. I'm happy with £30 Wii games but £50 PS3/360? Ouch.

   by xLinkinwormx - 2008-02-15
 » ummmmmmmm

the xbox360 has a much easier HDD upgrade,no screws, but u have to buy microsoft which is gay, it also is firmware upgradeable, only 2 times a year but its better than getting an update every 3 months that doesnt add much

the wii might get a hdd upgrade, and it has sd cards, the wii isnt a media hub so u dont need mass storage, and again its firmware upgradeable,

why are sony trying to make out that there console is the only one able to do this

Well I have to agree with the guy but wish i could also get paid for stating the obvious.
PS3 is on a steady rise.
360 has made a major breakthrough with regards to sales and aggresive marketing and games that players want.
Nintendo has surprised everyone and now has an excess cash to move forward.

My analysis is that the PS3 will continue a little longer than 360 and Nintendo as it has many components that are easily changed via revisions and its cpu architecture is far from exhausted and developers are going to get more out of it.
The 360 has started to gain ground but will need to develop faster as by 2010 the PS3 capabilities and the developers will have games that in all probability are graphically capable of more than the present 360.
Nintendo on its new wave of success may well move in on an area where many fanboys of PS3 and 360 are saying its not really a real graphical competitor. Some even state its not a games console?
Well thats a matter of discussion but the markets do not lie and the nintendo is selling faster than dunking doughnuts. So I cannot believe that management at Nintendo would be so stupid as to let this new wave of base users stagnate by rehashing. Like it or not I for one expect nintendo to go all out with its new found wealth and go grab an ever bigger piece of the pie.
Regardless of everything all i can say is what a great time to be playing games. All consoles regardless of choice are getting bigger badder better.

 » .

He means Nintendo will need to introduce a new console by 2010 because the Wii is already long obsolete and does not include features that even the PS2 had in 2000 such as a DVD player and Dolby digital 5.0 sound. Also since nearly all TVs will be high definition its about time Nintendo supported it even though they like making over $100 on each console they sell, they won't be able to sell obsolete hardware for long.

in 5 years hey will release a new console. not because they have to, because they want more of our money. and ps3 will outlast 360. 360 was released to early ( either that or charge for dlc because they cant fit it on the hd dvd)

   by vgit - 2008-02-28
 » 2013

every console has its delays....like the ps3...every 8th gen console will come out by 2013
