Oh please. Not another one. This following yesterday's news? Oy vey...

Apparently, a new bill is going around the New York Assembly. This one was introduced by one Kieth L.T. Wright, and he aims to have even more restrictions in the selling of video games. On top of the already existing ESRB ratings, the new bill (A01474) would have minors shielded from racism, cursing, and other forms of insult in video games.

Once approved, the bill:

Prohibits the sale to minors of certain rated video games containing a rating that reflects content of various degrees of profanity, racist stereotypes or derogatory language, and/or actions toward a specific group of persons.

For the record, it was also Keith Wright who previously tried to pass a bill (operative word, of course, is "tried" - he actually failed), one which similarly wanted to place restrictions on games with racial tendencies and religious violence.

[insert never-ending debate on RE5's so-called "racism" and Assassin's Creed's "religious intolerance" here]

let the name calling and racists remarks begin!

and I think that's ridiculous. It's cool to kill Caucasians, Latinos and Asians, but if you shoot a black person in Africa it's racist?!?! Get outta here. Sounds like some lobbyist is trying to make up for something his racist parent/grandparent/great grandparent did. Equal opportunity kills for everyone.

The word Africa wasn't even used in the article.... wth are you talking about? Are you reffering to past news and the picture Gino chose to use?

 » this is dumb

resident evil 5 is placed in africa and has you shooting black people... so clearly its racist... pretty soon every game with be futuristic and be like halo... since obviously it would hurt someones feelings to "target" any race in particular we need to focus on killing aliens then.... well of course unless we find aliens and they happen to be politically correct as well...

....I'm waiting for the punch-line. WTF is wrong with this? Besides nothing.

We ALREADY do that. Gee, are the poor lazy ass parents going to have to get off their fat lazy ass and take their kids to the store to buy a video game? AWE!!!!!!!!!! WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!

WOW i didn't know games can be racists too, i guess my good nature rubbed on all my games, they never used any racial remarks or cursed at me before. XD

People should understand that these are fictitious games some might have ideas from the real world but are exaggerated for entertainment purposes, there is no need to turn every single concept in a game into a political war and if someone is talking about racism there better be solid proof of that not like when they called RE5 a racist game because of shooting africans, its set in AFRICA and you shoot ZOMBIES.

The real problem with this subject is online and people using racial slang thinking that its cool when all it does is create an uncomfortable environment for everyone to play or socialize in.

Part of the story is that you are a half-white half-black man, and the guys chasing you make racist comments. I just thought it added another level of stupidity to already stupid enimies,I didn't mind Icould also see how someone might want to know about that befor they bought the game.
I don't care what kind of warnings are on the games as long as the don't censor the games anymore than they do now, I'm fine. I don't look at the ratings on games anyway.

I agree with the last thing you said. It kind of annoys me when people just throw out the 'N' word all the time.

 » Cmon....

What about the poor orc's? I don't know how many games I've killed them in. It's people like this that remind people and keep racism alive, no one would even think about this crap if it weren't people like this and Suppremicists like Jesse Jackson, KKK's and others, we are all people, we kill em all in video games, give me a break.....

 » yeah...

It's hard to disagree with the idea that kids should not be exposed to racism. With that in mind, isn't this just reiterating the ESRB's stance? Doesn't the ESRB base their ratings on this language, racism, violence and sex? Assuming they do, what is the goal here?

It seems likely that he will achieve the following:

1) Political gain/Name in the paper
2) Pressure the ESRB to be harder on racism in video games
3) Public image manipulation - Family man fights to keep kids safe
4) Bring the racism topic to the forefront

I'm sure there are other agendas, but these are the ones that come to mind. Regardless of success, he has already achieved all three.

» actually i can argue that...

kids should be exposed to discrimination, they should be the target of it so they can understand.

even the most ignorant among us can empathize once they have been the victim...

   Re: ISOHaven - 2009-01-15
 » WTF!?!?!?!?!

Ok, I'll hire someone to rape you and your whole family. That way you can truly UNDERSTAND it....

The sad part is...ignorance breeds ignorance.

Exposed IN THE PROPER WAY, which is NOT video games. As for being the target? STFU!

   Re: rollypoly - 2009-01-18
 » @iso

in games you retard...

the xmen comics for example, the reader can identify with the characters, who are discriminated against...

i was talking about kids being raised in ignorant homes that teach that discrimination is ok...

You clearly stated that KIDS SHOULD BE VICTIMIZED BY RACISM.

"they should be the target of it so they can understand."

You are a prick!

people are only allowed to kill white zombies? lol seriously these guys need to grow up

» What a strange thing to be worried about...

I'm not sure I can name a game that intentionally contains racist content. RE5 is more a misunderstanding from the impressions than it is actually a targeted attack on black people, there are clearly positive black role models in the game and I certainly wouldn't say that RE4 was racist against Spaniards. The GTA series certainly has more than its fair share of slurs, but most of that comes from people of color, and the game seems to go out of its way to have the white racists mind their tongues. (Poor white people overcharged their racism card and now don't get to pop off.) And Mega Man Powered Up has Oil Man ... does that count?

Until the KKK gets licensed as a UE3 developed, what games could possibly fall under such a law?

   by FABLE - 2009-01-13
 » .

100 different games couldn't expose kids to as much racial intolerance and vulgar language as 3 minutes on XBL can :D

Why shield them from things they're going to be exposed to anyway

   Re: Xastabus - 2009-01-14
 » Win

You're absolutely right. I have yet to encounter any games where the in game content is more objectionable than some of the things I've heard on voice chat. And most of it comes from squeeky preteens. On the other hand it's probably no worse than the things my friends and I used to say to each other in middle school.

Bottom line, New York tax money is being wasted on this game law tripe when the politicians should be using it to stimulat the economy somehow.

 » ...good luck!

lol, they want to shield today's youth, start with music...the crap some kids listen too, its just too much bass and some random guy trying to be "cool".

video games would be the last step...

   by JarvyBirdman - 2009-01-14

It Dosen't really matter if a game is racist it's just a video game man gosh its just a fantasy, dude politicians will cause the end the world someday
