There?s a lot happening on the MbShell front today! Last month Blue2k released the latest version of the MbShell program Artillery for the PSP and it was an instant hit with the community. Today, Artillery was upgraded along with the launch of their official website and the announcement of the Live Fire! service.

With the release of the website a new build of Artillery is available, the 0.06 version. For Artillery this marks the end of a specific range of builds. It will be the last 0.0x version, meaning it has gone beta. The 0.06 also marks the end of the C era for Artillery, I've been working hard to convert the whole shell to C++. Every piece of code was rewritten and checked, making the shell more stable for you, and easier to work with for me. The 0.06 version features everything I've been working on to the point I've stopped working in C. It's new features are:

  • Homebrew loading
  • Extensions loading
  • Full skinning support (windows, icons, etc)
  • Font support (skinnable too)
  • Much more...

Another new service provided with the website is Artillery: Live Fire!. This is a service for anyone interested in checking out the latest of Artillery shell. From now on you can download a build updated almost every day. It will contain the latest features, options and graphics. It is basically a version I'm working with on that particular moment. Be warned though, as it is a development build it can contain bugs or might not even work at all. But hey, bleeding edge comes at a price.

   by super_hoops1967 (Unregistered) - 2006-02-06

so this doesnt work on 2.00 then?

---For one, Psix does play mp3s. You tried lite (which for one limited audio file to a test file size of 2mbs) and you are trying to compare a limited demo version of one shell to a full version of another.---

Are you actually suggesting that he pay 10 dollars for a "product's" non-crippleware version just to compare MP3 playing capabilities? Sorry but uh, no. This does everything "PSix" was supposed to do and does it for free. It also looks fantastic and has some nice twists that PSIX doesn't. Oh and, did I mention it was free? He compared two -free- apps that were supposed to do the "same" things and his statements are perfectly valid.

Anyway, this shell is badass, very clean, very well done and very functional. Psix? Not so much.

My game icon works. There is a readme in the forlder mbshell/game which says to put your game into a single folder and move it to that folder.

Move "filename" and "filename%" folders into a single folder and call it what you want.

Does anyones menu button work? mine dosen't.

Does everyone else have a window open when they boot up that says module loading.. that never finishes what it is doing.

Digi, buddy... pal.... comrade.... it's quite useless to defend PSix lite... it's not functional to be called a demo. Might as well call it a nice looking, non-functional background. If PSix wanted people to buy their shell they really should have included functional components... like being able to play even 1 mp3 per boot... or look at 10 photos... something at least for us to go on.

On the OTHER HAND! BLUE2K! GAWDDAMN! What a great shell this is. Fully functional... and looks great. I'm going to say this is the best homebrew shell I've seen to date! And that includes PSix even though I don't consider charged-for-software "homebrew".

Great job Blue2k! Keep up the great work! =)

hey, this is a cool shell. keep it up! is there any chance of those features that people ask for, like support for games which use higher firmwares? and... just wondering, does it use more power to run a shell? i know it's a stupid question, but it just occured to me that maybe it puts more on the cpu and stuff. any ideas?

great example of great homebrew. thumbs up from me!

oh, also, you know how people add mp3 players and stuff, do you all code your own mp3 playing programs for this stuff? could you not ask the likes of those guys who make that pmpmod thing for their program, so you could have video playback? and then there would be that universal remote prog... is it hard to add soemone else's program as an integrated part of your own?

   by comedy (Unregistered) - 2006-02-06

ok, one thing... why can't we use the regular directories for mp3 etc?

   by Feark (Unregistered) - 2006-02-06

"ok, one thing... why can't we use the regular directories for mp3 etc?"

Thinking of the same thing, dont really want to move all things and appz...
But what about the other version (Artillery Shell v0.6 – Plasmatique)? Can it point out where to find the music and other things in the ms?

   by bustarwulfsnk (Unregistered) - 2006-02-06

ok, is anyone having problems extracting either one of these files. i Dled both the default and the other one, and when i extract them i get corrupt file. i havent noticed anyone else here saying they have this problem. so why is it happening now? anyone?

   by ISOHaven (Unregistered) - 2006-02-06

Illegal Machine,
Actualy you are DEAD WRONG. Sei Tools doesn't work!

99.9% of what that POS utility outputs as a result of 1.5 -> 1.0 is corrupt and doesn't work.

So my question still stands.

Where's the v1.00 PBP!?!?!?!?

Oh... and until you use the full version of PSIX...maybe you should take everyones advise here and STFU!!!!

by Andrew tomczak (Unregistered) - 2006-02-06

in my game folder when i view it through this app, i only see 3 apps (instead of liek 5) i think i have to change the names back to when they showed corrupted icons. not sure, can anyone help?

by Andrew tomczak (Unregistered) - 2006-02-06

it may have something to do with them not having icons?

   by Andy (Unregistered) - 2006-02-06

Artillery is a multi-threaded OS, not a mere shell. Psix is a shell however. Just for clarification, a shell is mostly an interface to access a limited set of features. An operating system manages the different running programs. After running psix and artillery, the differences become quite apparent. Artillery can run Multiple programs "modules" *simultaneously* (i.e. having mp3 player + photo viewer + etc...).
Yes both can launch homebrews, but in Artillery, people can write software specifically for it and run it in a window. There's also a debug window to display debugging printfs, which in some way makes development easier than writing straight homebrew pbp.
However, Artillery is still premature in its built-in feature set. Perhaps soon when the API is exposed to the developers, it can garner more interest.

I have tried this shell and I can not help but be impressed with how well it works, although there does not seem to be a start button and that Loading Modules window that pops up at startup is slightly annoying it seems to do everything else with no real problems. And if this program is updated daily then I will definitely check it on a daily basis starting when I get back home, from what I see here so far this program is pretty good and can only get better.

I tried out this shell program for loading a few 2.0 games, perhaps the results will help the developers of this program to work out any bugs and make it more compatible with 2.0 games:
Prince Of Persia: Revelations loaded and played without any problems.
GTA: San Andreas caused an error when being loaded and the loader exited back to the shell.
The Sims 2 caused the psp to crash as the loader tried to start it.

On a side note, perhaps somebody should start a umd compatibility list for this program and the psp oss program, because some people might want to know which games work with these shell/os programs and do not require updating to 2.0 or a higher firmware version.

I have not tried this with eboot programs yet but will do so today and likely post the results if nobody beats me to it.

Good job.

Can anyone tell me what this shell does that PSP-OSS doesn't? Wondering if i should switch. Thanks.

Also, first team to write their shell to the PSP bios is TEH WINNAR. Seriously, the XMB sucks.

by Aryn The Cat (Unregistered) - 2006-02-06

Well, I finally managed to get around to trying the eboot support in this program, if there are too many subdirectories with eboots in the mbshell/game directory (and each homebrew program/game does require its own sub directory) then the shell will freeze when I click on the game directory. The latest update for this program on the livefire service also completely removes the game icon.

Anyway, the one thing this shell does that the psp oss does not do is run a larger number of umds, I managed to get prince of persia: revelations to work using mbshell but it would not work in psposs.

Also, isn't there somebody in team emergency exit developing something that will load any selected homebrew program when the psp boots up? I sure as hell hope that program is available to the general public by the time these os programs get a bit more advanced. On a side note, why don't the psp oss and mb shell developers cooperate and create a shell that amalgamates the features of both shells?

Looking good!

Keep up the good work.

   by ikarius (Unregistered) - 2006-02-06

No offense, but looks better tha PSIX, or at least more complete. Nice work going there ! Keep up the good work !

   by blackrain1 (Unregistered) - 2006-02-06

Sweet shell you guys. Im likeing the Live Fire idea.

by Illegal Machine (Unregistered) - 2006-02-06

I'm glad I got in on this one early so I can say....

Blue2k apparantly knows whats up. Did any of you see any form of extortion in that features list? no. Did any of you see Blue2k try to get YOU to pay HIM to test this app out for him? no. Do you see people bashing the **** out of him and calling him a european ****got? NO!

WHY?

Because they're not charging people 10 bucks to compensate him for thier self proclaimed precious time. They're NOT sitting up here telling you about how what great coders they are, and how unappreciative you all are because you DON'T want to pay them. They're setting up everything those psiX ****s are, and doing so WITHOUT all of the insults and freaking out.

I wonder why that is...

BLUE2k RULES

   by Jake (Unregistered) - 2006-02-06

That said, let's please keep the comments constructive and on the topic of this release only. The least you can do for these guys is not let the comments for their program turn into an off-topic debate.

   by Popson (Unregistered) - 2006-02-06

I like how this shell actually does what it says it does (ie. play mp3's). This is a very nice looking app and an impressive start for what looks like it can turn into an excellent psp app. I'd hate to admit it but this blows psix right out of the water(the lite version atleast)...not that that's to say much =P.

Lets all hope they dont start charging us too :) .

   by peeInMyPantz (Unregistered) - 2006-02-06

looks great...
thanx for your effort..
hope ppl like you will continue to make homebrew development exciting and free.

ikarius: can't say it looks like PSIX.. coz it's an OS.. all OS looks the same. wallpaper, taskbar, icons on the desktop.

by Illegal Machine (Unregistered) - 2006-02-06

yea, it looks awesome and works pretty well so far. I like the GUI a lot.

the Game icon does nothing tho. I dont know if I have to re-arrange anything to accomodate it, but its not doing anything when I double click on it like the other icons.

is there a full tutorial out there that I can read up on? or maybe a way to just have te shell access the proper flders from the PSP/GAME dir.?

anyway keep up the AWESOME work. I'll be keeping an eye on this one for sure

i dont know how to get this to work can anyone help i have a 2.0

   by SchluptNut (Unregistered) - 2006-02-06

Alex V, most likely thing youll have to do to play with this is have 1.5 firmware. I have games which require 2.00 firmware, how can I play UMD games without upgrading firmwares? I dont think its possible yet? Alex V, you can downgrade with 1.5 custom firmware. I havent tried it. Im waiting for the release that allows for 2.00 UMD playability.
