ChaosKnight has released a very nice port of Basilisk II for the PSP, called Basilisk II PSP. Basilisk II is an open-source 68k Macintosh emulator which will run systems 7.5.5 through 7.6.1 to be the easiest to run. Like the port of Bochs x86 emulator, Basilisk has the same principle. Simply put the emulator eboots in the correct PSP folder (the one without the % sign.) The files included are Macintosh 7.5.5, which can be downloaded from apple.com as well. You will need to supply your own LEGAL copy of mac.rom for this to work. Here is what ChaosKnight had to say about this release: ?

What Works
- Emulation
- Video (wrong colors, slow)
- Input (start = return, mouse = analog + X = click)

What Doesn't
- Ethernet
- Audio
- Keyboard
- External Filesystem (ability to use flash0:, mc0:, etc...)
- Serial (no irda0: support yet)

You can get it in our PSP Download section [here].
You can get the source in our PSP Download section [here].

Currently, this emulator will only run on PSPs with firmware version 1.0 or 1.50. If you do not know which firmware version your PSP has, or if you need help installing this application/game on your PSP, check one of our many informative FAQs. If you have a higher firmware version than 1.50 on your PSP, you cannot run this program. To downgrade the firmware from a version higher than 1.50, please visit [here].

Can you play Mac games on this?

This is pretty incredible - I love the idea. Can't wait to see where it goes, an see if we can't get some cool productivity applications for the PSP on top of all the great gaming options.

I don't think Palm and PPC OS are really that great for the PSP because of the lack of touchscreen - even if there were a mouse, it wouldn't be the same. Better to go with an OS that is designed for mouse input.

I'm still wondering why we haven't seen linux on PSP yet (or did I miss the announcement?). Not that I'm some huge linux geek, but it would be nice to have an OS that didn't require some gray-area mucking around and that already had lots of free applications for it.

   by elroy (Unregistered) - 2005-10-10

here's a quarda 650 rom: http://www.oldos.org/files/macdl/quadra650.rom

But you are only allowed to download it if you actually own a quadra 650.. so don't click the link unless you do!

this is really neat, except it is always crashing for me using the rom that elroy linked to.

is it only a specific rom that works?

wow that whole red screen thing scared me a little, (paranoid) but it works great. REALLY FAST!!! now if only we can get some better stuff running like DSL or a faster version of 95. that would be great. Nice work tho.

This is definitely the real deal. I have Basilisk II running on my PC and I copied over some programs to the SYSTEM.DSK file that came with the download package. They work as expected. I also copied over the Mouse control panel, which allowed me to speed up the mouse cursor a tad, but strangely only when moving it diagonally. It was still slow moving in straight lines. Also, the setting doesn't seem to be retained after a reboot, even though the setting on the control panel seems to still be there. You have to go back and select it again for it to take. Still, a VERY impressive first start.

Forget about downloading 7.5.3, the download comes with a nice 7.5.5 system.dsk file in the BasiliskIIPSP Folder. Any OS up to (but not including) 7.6 can be distributed free of charge.

Just find yourself a nice quadra rom, rename it to mac.rom, put it in there with the rest of the basilisk files and start her up. should work.

hey I downloaded this and stuck it on my psp then went to game>memorystick and just found 2 corrupt icons.

what do I need to get this running?
also do I need to own macintosh 7 to do this legally?

if I do, then are their any free os's that I can use in this?

   by Anonymous (Unregistered) - 2005-10-10

   by Anonymous (Unregistered) - 2005-10-10

Pretty much all of Apple's obsolete software is available here: http://www.info.apple.com/support/oldersoftwarelist.html

Get the full 7.5.3 download and then the 7.5.5 or 7.6 update to it.... at least I think. It's been over a decade.
