Ó

Oh yeah!

We here at QJ like the fact that if you phonetically pronounced Dark_AleX's latest custom firmware (OE-A), you end up saying "Oh yeah!" and quite aptly so. Oh yeah, indeed, and just as promised, Dark_AleX is once again coded into the annals of PSP homebrew history. He's now released his latest hack: 3.03 OE-A (Open Edition Revision A).

The major features of this release is that it's built for FW 3.03 (no, duh) and that PSX ISO compression is now supported. You'd also be able to use PSX game manuals with the document.dat utility. Here's the full changelog for 3.03 OE-A:
  • Change from firmware 3.02 to 3.03
  • Added support for compression in psx isos (look at popstation documentation for more details)
  • Added support for decrypted document.dat (psx games manual) (look at docmaker documentation for more details)
  • Fixed a bug regarding free region: a stupid bug caused it not to work at all. Now it should work, although it has not been tested due to lack of umd's of different regions between the testers and me
  • Some generic bug fixes in the code
  • Redded the sdk
As with other Dark_AleX custom firmware releases, 3.03 OE-A is installed in the same way. For the newbies, that leaves you with three options: you can either check our ongoing coverage on Dark_Alex-related releases, or you can simply take a look at the readme file included in the archive.

UPDATE: nilzxx has just made this video which shows him sucessfully installing 3.03 OE-A on his PSP. So for all the doubters out there, doubt no more. This thing works. Thank you, nilzxx!

this should stop people asking for the firmware upgrade here :x

 » Brick Fix

To those who bricked their PSP's but can get into Recovery mode... the same thing happened to me. First, you need to get the RECOVERY folder that should have been included with 3.02 OE-A. You'll also need to get the 1.50 firmware, rename it to UPDATE.PBP

Boot your PSP holding down R and Toggle USB, copy the RECOVERY folder over. X:/RECOVERY.
Then choose the recovery option. If you still get a black screen follow further instructions.

You'll also need the systemctrl.prx file for 1.50. Google for it. Then when in recovery mode: toggle USB and place the systemctrl.prx file in X:/REFLASH, go to advance options and choose Flash->Systemctrl (1.50). When done, go back and try to run the recovery option again. If it wirks, you'll be in firmware 1.50 again, then you can try reupdating again.

i have a problem i have already updated my psp to sony's 3.03 firmware does that mean i cant load any homebrew firmwares on it or run a any apps? can someone help me please im a complete novice with psp as got it last month for work reply via asmanthebell@aol.com

   Re: chameleon (Unregistered) - 2007-01-05
 » no..

you can't, not yet anyway. first rule of psp ownage : don't ever upgrade your firmware with the official sony one. they usually just patch stuff so you can't use homebrew. I'm sure someone will find a way to hack 3.03 in the coming months though, so just wait it out..

   Re: Jarvis (Unregistered) - 2007-01-05
 » Can 3.03 OE-A run homebrew?

Just wondering can 3.03 OE-A run homebrew, the same as 1.5 firmware psps? was not to sure, and if it can will i be able to run dev hook still? becasue my psp laser motor burn out a while ago and the only way i can play games is using the noUMD feture used in dev hook, so dont fancy upgrading to this to only find out i can no longer use homebrew games and apps, and can no longer play games, casue if that were to happen i would be left with a psp that would be as much use as a bricked psp.

Any reply and info to this would greatly be appreciated ( also only reply if you deffinatly know what your talking about e.g. someone alreadt using 3.03 OE-A) thanks.

   Re: FlarePhoenix (Unregistered) - 2007-01-05
 » ...

Jarvis, 3.02 OE-B had a noUMD feature built-in to the XMB, so I don't see any reason why 3.03 wouldn't. Also, there should still be 1.5 and 3.02 kernel modes, so I'm pretty sure Devhook would work. I'm reading the README for 3.03 OE-A right now, which says it is very similar to 3.02 OE-B, so it should run any homebrew, and ISOs, you have. If not, you can use the Recovery feature to flash back to a lower firmware, like 1.5 or 2.71, but you shouldn't need it.

 » Correction: Dark AleX< Sony

Dark AleX is less than Sony because they have about like a billion more dollars than him. AAAAAAAAAAND without Sony there would be no PSP and there would no PSPUPDATES and so that leaves us to the conclusion that sony owns us all.

Just tried the compression with Hot Shots Golf 2.

Original Backup ISO = 275 MB
Playstation Store PBP = 143 MB
Popstation Level 9 Compressed PBP = 174 MB

Not sure what Sony does differently, or maybe they ripped some stuff out of the game.

Either way, it's still sweet, and this will help a lot.

I'm going to try with Crash Bandicoot next.

Crash Bandicoot

Original Backup ISO + 602 MB
Playstation Store PBP + 463 MB
Popstation Level 9 Compressed PBP + 524 MB

So Sony must have a special compression that's a little better.
Not complaining though, because this is still pretty damn sweet.

On another note, not only do these compressed PBP's work flawlessly, but they also properly pick up my save files from the playstation store versions.

I'm only willing to test this on games that I actually own, otherwise I would test a couple more. So that's that.

wat did you type in the command? cause i dont think im doing it right.....
"C:Documents and SettingsUSERDesktoppopstationpopstation.exe" "FinalFantasy8CD1" "SLPM86023 9" "C:Documents and SettingsUSERDesktoppopstationFF8 disk1.iso"

   Re: Snarg (Unregistered) - 2007-01-04

SLPM86023
and
9

are 2 different arguments and should not have quotes around them.
And isn't the code for FFVIII disc 1 actually
SLUS00892
??

SLPM86023
is for Castlevania SoN

ty for that.... not its
"C:Documents and SettingsBernardDesktoppopstationpopstation.exe" "FinalFantasy8CD1" SLUS00892 9 "C:Documents and SettingsBernardDesktoppopstationFF8 disk1.iso" .....still aint working

   Re: Snarg (Unregistered) - 2007-01-04
 » .

Are you sure you have the base.pbp and keys.bin file in the popstation directory?

And if you're doing this from the command prompt like you're supposed to, you should just browse to
C:/Documents and Settings/Bernard/Desktop/popstation

c:/>cd C:/Documents and Settings/Bernard/Desktop/popstation

Then your popstation command would only need to be
popstation.exe FinalFantasy8CD1 SLUS00892 9 "C:/Documents and Settings/Bernard/Desktop/popstation/FF8 disk1.iso"

You only require quotes if the argument has spaces in it.

mine is the same just put everything to PSP/Game, i have a TA-082 w/ 3.03OE-A, and it works fine, if you dont have a GAME150 it just means that you DONT have the first generation motherboard...i think...but yeah ur fine you dont need to reflash anything...

   Re: mj (Unregistered) - 2007-01-04
 » to pdjf

Basically, you need to run it with the 1.5 kernal. By DEFAULT, the GAME folder in 3.02 OE runs a hacked, home-brew compatible 3.03/2.71 kernal and 1.5 needs a special user-created folder called GAME150 in the PSP dir. But, if you go into the registry and set the GAME folder kernal to 1.5, then you can put the files in the GAME folder. Hope that helps.

I just updated :-)

It is OK to install it with a moded topmenu_plugin.rco file.

Do not flash an old version spoof to the flash (sysctrl.rco)
It is different for all versions just to let you guys know.

If you want to spooks your version, get sysctrl.rco from flash0 and edit whats on line 0A6AC (3.03 OE-A) (9 Char. Max)
