Blind Assistant CFW0001: Now with Go!Cam support - Image 1It's been a while, but it looks like Pegasus2000's made considerable progress with his work on Blind Assistant.

The developer is sending out word that the Visilab Research Center under the University of Messina (where Pegasus 2000 is a student) has just released the first official version of this app, and that it's now freely available for download.

In case you were not around during the initial release, here's a quote from the Visilab site regarding what Blind Assistant does:

Blind Assistant is an attempt to realize a software that can help men and children that are blind or visual impaired. The software is designed to run not on complex and expensive hardware devices, but on simple and cheap devices as Sony Playstation Portable (PSP).

Blind Assistant uses Nanodesktop tecnology for windows environment, it is able to speak with the user using ndFLite, a porting of the speech synthesis engine originally developed by the Carnegie Mellon University and it is able to recognizes the name and the position of the people that are present in that moment in your room, using complex algorithms (as Intel EigenFaces, PentLand PCA or SIFT).

This application's official release now carries support for either the Sony's PSP Go!Cam or Eyeserver technology. Given that Eyeserver is still a proof-of-concept, Blind Assistant will default to the Go!Cam accessory. The application will run on either original PSPs or PSP Slim units running on custom firmware 3.71 M33-4.

Pegasus2000 further states that new releases for Blind Assistant may carry the ability to recognize the place where the user is at, along with other features. If you've got a Wi-Fi connection, the app will auto-update if it detects any new versions.

Those interested in reading this application's full installation instructions will want to view the readme included with the file. You may also want to visit Pegasus2000's release thread on the QJ.NET PSP Development Forums for further details.

 » This is cool, but...

If a person is blind, then why would they own a psp? The idea is cool, but it is confusing to think that someone who is blind or barely can see would own a portable gaming device.

also anyone know where to get a GO! cam for cheap that is reliable?
