PSP to PS3The moment we got hold of this news, we were like, "They're not ready!?!" And we're telling you now, we'd like to be proven wrong. So before we become all riled up about this again, we'll just tell you what's the whole deal with PS3 System Software v1.10 and PSP firmware v3.0.

You are all aware of the PSP-PS3 remote play functionality, right? Simply put, the function allows people to use their handhelds as a remote media player for the PS3. Also, this allows some PlayStation Network downloaded content to be played on the PSP.

The thing is, we learned today that the feature is not immediately available at launch. PSP owners need to download version 3.0 of the firmware to activate the above mentioned connectivity. The firmware download will only become available by the end of November.

On to PS3 matters, we also learned that the launch units don't come with proper firmwares that can actually connect the new PlayStation Network hub. Sony itself admitted that soon-to-be owners of the next-gen console would need to update their system by running firmware System Software Version 1.10.

While the latter is available through the System Update option under the settings header of the cross media bar the moment people turn on their PS3 units, it is still a wonder why this has to be done. Your thoughts?

No surprise there...Now we need to wait for the firmware to be emulated on PSP models so it could be used with PS3 and still use homebrewn stuff

PS3 aint looking that great anyway...and sod the price...thats fooking expensive

It may ripen but it doesn't necessarily get better, unlike bananas... :) Homebrew makes everything better though... ;)

 » easy answer

The need for the 1.10 Firmware is rather obvious, really. Production of PS3s started in September, with a Firmware that was tested long enough to be considered stable and secure. In the meantime, from September right through launch, they have been working on improving, debugging and adding the Playstation online features in the firmware - the need for which would have been rising right up till a few weeks ago, because as developers started using them (stuff like the buddy lists were only recently available), will likely to have received feedback in the form of bugreports and suggestions for improvement.

But you can't just quickly update all those PS3s that have been coming out of the factory in neat little shiney boxes, so instead you'll just have to do so when you get them at home.

It should be a painless process though, and since the people who need it most need it for online play, they are going to have network connections, and so only have to hit that 'network update' button and wait a few minutes.

And ofcourse a system upgrade comes with the warning that Sony cannot be held responsible if anything goes wrong. To me Sony looks like a big bunch of amateurs. If they want people to upgrade , they shouldn't give those warnings. If they don't wanna be held responsible for their ***** , then they should do all the upgrading.

The games will probably come with the update on the disk just like the umd's. How cool would it be if someone made devhook for the ps3...

   Re: DiabloTerrorGF - 2006-11-09
 » um

There would be no reason. The PS3 can install 2 OS(probably more with a linux bootloader). Linux homebrew will work on the PS3 and you can keep updating your System to play games.

   Re: Spector - 2006-11-09
 » they do

It has already been said a bunch of games are being released with firmware updates on them so they can be played.

 » I like the idea

I dont really care what peopel say. I like to idea of havig firmware updates. This way sony can add new features all the time, which is not so good for homebrew developers and those wankers who like to have free games, but so what. The PS3 will just keep getting better and better with new updates.

   Re: RommelTJ (Unregistered) - 2006-11-09
 » I agree

I also like the idea of constant firmwares. At the beginning, I loved homebrew games, but now they are not so great.
Also, the PS3 will be constantly online and a virus is bound to appear. I hope that does that decide not to upgrade won't be left with a 600 dollar piece of metal and plastic.

   Re: Yeah (Unregistered) - 2006-11-09
 » True!

Man, I'm so sick of those f@gs that keep bashing Sony because of updating firmware, because it hampers their ability to keep up with the news games for pirating purposes. That's *****ed up! Sony is not here to give you free things; they are a *****ing company that needs to make money in order to provide entertainment. Nothing in the world is free. There is always something to be compensated for.

These stupid piraters think they own the world. Just shut the ***** up, you *****es!

» PS3 updates might be safe

Hopefully the PS3's won't be prone to bricking. Either the firmware needs to be stored on the hard drive OR there should be a non rewritable chip that stores some type of BIOS so that if a flash based firmware gets bricked during an update, a built in recovery mode will be available.

Not that I really care since I can run games and Linux on my PC which costed < 600 or 500 $.

I Agree with PS3Rider. I think the whole firmware thing is a good thing. I really dont care too much about homebrew. Thanks sony and keep up the good work :)

   by pspman16 - 2006-11-09
 » Homebrew

it might be the fact that Sony might have found an exploit in the firmware and has just recently fixed it. They want to stop the PS3 homebrew scene as soon as possibly so THIS doesn't happen again. Nobody upgrade as that's probably the reason!

   by BULL3TPR00F - 2006-11-09
 » its cuz

they make US update because its way to time consuming to update every single ps3 that comes off the production line, which will definitely delay the launch. And since production has already begun a while ago, they cant just start adding updated ps3's to the group. They're too far into production to chsnage any software thats already coded into the system,

on the psp they have firmware updates
and thats cool cus u get new stuff but on the down side you have to choose homebrew or the new game that just came out, so you end up not feeling like you can do what ever you want with YOUR system, and that really sucks! so i'm looking at getting a xbox360 cus i don't want to have to deal with the hassel of sony
and what they might do with the ps3.

You mean like all the modified 360s that got bricked when that one firmware update came out.. yea I don't want to have to deal with that either.

 » You suck *****s!

Man, stop complaining like a dirty *****. Sony is a company that is out to make money. Just because they're protecting their investmen/product from pirates like you, that doesn't mean you're right and their wrong. They don't make money on the hardware, so they have to make the money else where. Where do they make the money?! They make it from software--games.

They can't let their system be so easily hackable that everyone can just pirate games. That does not work. That's not smart business. By the way, Xbox 360 also has updates. If you don't update, you won't be able to connect to Xbox Live.

Next time, be smarter about these things, *****!

is it really necessary to even have that function.. Who cares if you can control the ps3 w/psp. what the hell is the point? it might be cool for a couple hours than it will be boring.

   Re: Doi. (Unregistered) - 2006-11-09
 » ^_^

The controlling of your ps3 is not what you should be thinking about.

^_^ It is the connection of your ps3 to your psp. I actually heard what the idea is:

PS3 >wifi>internet>wifi>psp

SO your psp could play anything from your ps3 from anywhere with wifi... ^_^

Imagine, a quadruple layer BlueRay 800 GB game playable on a handheld anywhere with wifi. A neat idea.

   Re: T (Unregistered) - 2006-11-09

do you really think it will be possible to play games one you PS3 properly through the internet? in the same household is easy, but wouldn't sending the required info through the internet be rather... lag... gy?

not very good... somebody had better crack the psp 3.0 soon, since the psp connectivity is something i'm gonna want, and i cant afford to lose homebrew...

   by Illegal Machine - 2006-11-09
 » this is why

Because first the PSPS was only going to "connect" somehow, they didnt even know how they would do it, but the units were already designed, and they wanted extra sales points after the design was done.

then they decided that they would use the PS3 as a location free player, THEN they decide that the PSP is going to play PS1 games, THEN they decide how theyre going to make them available..

they havent exactly been up to date with the features they want to implement, and they want to be able to addd features as they go, to stay adaptive...

trust me without that adaptibility, they would have sank LONG ago. Imagine if the PSP had stayed at firmware 1.0...or even 1.5, there would be NO web browser, NO location free player access, NO AVC, NO flash suppport, and newer games would have been limited to older codecs and prx commands..

so I can see exactly why they do it like this in fact

You're forgetting homebrew, idiot. No doubt the PS3 firmware upgrades are to prevent homebrew, like the PSP ones.

It's a computer too?

Can I type up a document?
Can I use image editing programs?
Can I download homebrew/freeware games?
Do you have a brain?

So the ps3 is prone to bricking! Let's say I'm updating the firmware and there is a power outage while the update is installing... does that make my ps3 a brick? I should start thinking of buying a UPS unit for my PS3.

 » Ps3 updates are crap

The reason some poeple hate ps3 firmware updates is becuase they give crap features or very little. MS just had an update for xbox 360 and it came with a crap load of updates and cool features so no one would have second thoughts about upgrading. Personally I hate the thought of calling it "firmware" updates im not sure why I just do. If a company wants us to update our console they need to give us a reason too and not force us by saying hey if you dont upgrade you wont be playing any of our games. Sony seems to hate all there consumers by doing crap like that. Plus psp remote play thing with the ps3 is crap. Streaming content from Pc to xbox 360 owns that crap.

   Re: GaveUpTomorrow - 2006-11-09
» and how do you know

that PS3 firmware updates are crap already. The system isn't even out yet, therefore, there hasn't even been a firmware update. Ya, lets complain about something that hasn't even come out yet.

   Re: TheDude (Unregistered) - 2006-11-09
 » owns?

Ya and the only way to stream video to the 360 is with Media Center wich you have to buy if you don't have.It costs about $140-150.No you cant stream video on normal XP with windows connect only pictures and music. With ps3 there is no need to stream since you can install Linux(for free) go online download vids and play em. So basicly the console is a PC to. I have all my movies on an i-book so guess what, plug it in usb and bam good to go. That owns. Your sentence about the recent 360 dashboard update was funny as hell. I have a 360 and no there wasn't a crapload of new updates and cool features, there were just a few.Oh and like someone said above me if you don't update your dashboard on 360 you cant go on Xboxlive so if all you play is online games then your statement about sony forcing you to update holds true with microsoft as well.

   Re: Somone (Unregistered) - 2006-11-09

the reason for updating is the network play...look...HOMEBREW IS ALLOWED ON THE PS3. Linux is on the system, any linux games created ca
