Tanya Byron - Image 1Dr. Tanya Byron, the outspoken critic of the video game violence whose name recently surfaced after her government supported Byron Review was published, had a few words for other critics in the gaming scene.

Known for supporting parent awareness concerning game ratings, she also wants the opinionated folks to "stop panicking, get a grip, move on in the debate and just be sensible about who plays what at what age, and what's appropriate."

Byron stressed out the importance of allowing the public to learn about content of games, saying:

I think [ELSPA] is concerned about the BBFC and I understand that, and I saw Paul Jackson yesterday and we talked about it. The reason I phrased my recommendation in the way that I did is that I emphasised a period of public consultation, and I emphasised a lot in the media that during that period the industry very much needs to be talking about how these recommendations can be implemented in a way that works for the industry as well, because that's really important.

» she's female and old duh..

Old women and honestly most women in general don't understand video games so they criticize it's awful, but it's normal.

People like you and the two previous posters are the proper counterparts to JT here, not Mrs Byron.

Everything she has said is totally reasonable. What's so bad about an unified game ratings system? What's so terrible about educating parents about the true contents of games? (So that non-gamers stop thinking videogames are about virtual orgasmic rape) What's so anti-gaming about telling the anti-gamers to tone down their BS and be sensible? And how is making sure that the implementation 'works for the industry as well' going to destroy the videogame industry?

Mrs Byron is pretty much the best friend gaming has at the moment, a sensible person who concludes that there is no clear link against videogames and violence, and that the best way to do things is to teach parents rather than ban ban ban. This knee jerk 'she's a dumb woman' backlash is just moronic.
