CES 2008: Seagate refuses to talk about possible mobile storage for PS3, PSP - Image 1

The 2008 Consumer Electronics Show may be on its last day, but it hasn't bid farewell without an air of mystery. Seagate's new portable device known as DAVE was unveiled last year, leaving room to speculate its potential in Sony's all-in-one entertainment plan for their next generation consoles: the Sony PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable. When asked about possible versions for Sony platforms, Seagate commented saying they shouldn't be talking about it.

Yes, you read that right the first time: they shouldn't. "Sony is sure not prepared to talk about that and neither are we," said Rob Pait, Seagate's marketing manager, who later went on to say that they really shouldn't even talk about the whole idea. "We can't talk about this" would be the final words from Seagate's marketing head.

The Digital Audio Video Experience, or DAVE for short, is a portable media storage device that couples WiFi and Bluetooth technology for connectivity. The first prototype of its kind housed 60 GB of data within a tiny shell casing small enough to fit into your pocket (see above).

And with Sony's BD Live initiative, DAVE seems just the likely candidate platform to extend Sony's PS3 and PSP entertainment capabilities - platform being the operative term here. Apparently DAVE isn't a device that would be sold by Seagate - it will have to be redesigned and manufactured by third-party companies to interface with their own proprietary devices.

We guess you could say that we're expecting more developments on this soon. After all, if Sony is to "do their own product announcements around [the DAVE for PS3, PSP idea]" they're likely to do it soon.

» What did you just say?

Did you mean that sux aka you want Blu tooth and 60 gigs full of memory in your PSP or what?

From my perspective, Sony is trying to take down both Apple and Nintendo by bringing out stuff like SKYPE, Cell phone type of device for the PSP SLIM, Camera for PSP, GPS for PSP, I believe Sony will keep on making stuff like this for the PSP to test it.

They want an all in one device, so little by little they add new stuff to the PSP to test it.

I think what Sony is trying to achieve now is to make the PSP into more of a PDA/gaming device, multi media device but the PSP won't be a PDA until PSP2 comes out.

Thats when it will become a full PDA/gaming device, it will have PDA type applications, PDA functions like a cellphone, calling to other PSP owners, blu tooth tecnology, Camera, GPS, and a touch screen and everything a PDA has, plus gaming device and great graphics for the PSP2 already built into the device.

You know I believe this DAVE device will probably be used for the PSP2, the successor of 1 because they are trying to create a gaming/PDA, multi media device all in one.

You don't believe me? Just look at the GPS, camera, and SKYPE that they are releasing and have already released.

Sony is trying to create the worlds cheapest PDA device from what I see, they did create the worlds cheapest Blu Ray player. DAVE will probably be great for the PSP2.

Anyway sorry for the little off topic but I believe DAVE will be used for the PSP2 and PSP2 will be like a PDA.

I concur, DAVE will be retrofitted to work with the PSP
and that a PSP2 with Skype and Cell capabilities as
well as like you say a PDA's presents in the market.

I am no SONY fan boy but I stand behind products
that are both Multifaceted like the PSP and ahead of
it's time.

I like the fact that we are heading into the age where
we both need and want an all in one device, much
like Sandra Bullock's wrist communicator in Final Fantasy.

It's just going to be a little while till me get holo screens
that are key stroke sensitive.

One day...

If seagate can't talk about it this would mean that the deal is still in discussion, maybe already on the bounds of agreements. The device has to be redesigned and manufactured so that would take Sony at least a year or two, where no doubt they will add some of they're own unique features in the process, and therfor maybe YAMI ANUBIS X is right, this could be for a future PSP, since the current PSP will be in about its 4th or 5th year, Sony will definatly be well into designing and creating the PSP2 should that be what it's called. With another 2 years before it's released if we look at past trends of games consoles having a 7 year life expectancy. (I don't know if this is true about portable consoles though.
