If you're not happy with a video game, the best thing to do is to air your complaints via phone or mail. That's what Kotaku reader Matt did. He wrote to Capcom customer service about his gripes about the PSP game Monster Hunter Freedom. Though we don't normally expect replies from companies, I'd have to say Matt is one lucky dude. After getting the standard "apology on behalf of the company" spiel, he was offered a small gift as a token of Capcom's sincerity.

A week later, he got a box from UPS. As would any gaming aficionado, he expected a t-shirt, a PSP screensaver or some leftover swag from E3. But lo and behold, the Capcom loot turned out to be a must-have utensil set for a barbecue cookout. It even included the official Monster Hunter Freedom poogie doll given out with pre-orders. Hmm, I smell a barbecued poogie.

 » hmm..

What complaints could he possibly have?
he must have said something along the lines of
"why doesn't this game clean my grill?"
or something?

would be willing to bet that the letter was some super nerdy complaint about some ridiculous nuance in the game... so the employee at capcom who replied was obviously telling the guy to STFU AND GO OUTSIDE

 » T-Shirts

That's pretty cool, reminds me of when I worked at Gamestop and the PC game Chaos Legion had been "pennied out" meaning we no longer carried it and it was pulled off the shelves, the computers can't have a price of 0.00 so it becomes one cent and the employees can just take it. Well it was apparently recalled due to a damaged disc. I sent it to Capcom and after some time got a replacement, plus a T-shirt and some other stickers or something. Just wore the shirt yesterday.

 » WTF?

 » yeah right

What a load of crap. Just another fat loser begging for attention by throwing the stuff he got with his game pre-order into a set his dad bought for his grill and trying to act like he actualy did somehting he can tell people about. If you actualy believe Capcom sent him the grill set, you're not very smart. The guy that said this happened is laughing at anyone who believes him. But then again , I might be wrong because after all, everything people say on the internet is true.

 » this is odd

why would they send that? i guess when someone complained i'd taken his parking space i sent him a flaming bag of poo... so maybe unrelated things can be sent by well wishers.

seriously though, would capcom even make 'capcom grill sets'... i doubt it very much.

This is so idiotic. That guy is a moron. Now he thinks he's cool because he complained to Capcom and received a grill set from them.

 » pretty funny

i actually thought this to be really clever of them. to anybody who hasnt ever played monster hunter, the grill set is actually one of the most usefull items, as it allows you to cook your raw meat, so you can eat it and regain lost stamina. i'd take this over a t-shirt anyday.

He probably mentioned that he hated the game and was going to throw it on his grill and melt it. Obviously Capcom gave in to this kid's opinion and sent him grilling accessories. Probably a sarcastic little stab at this kid too on Capcom's behalf: "Then go grill it you whiny *****, we'll help you!"

 » yes, it's real

Nice to see I'm getting famous. Yes the grill set is real, and yes, I was complaining about the lack of infrastructure mode. It was advertised on the pre-order box at gamestop and I wanted an online game for my psp. But this isn't about me, this is about a game company that doesn't just blow people off when they make a mistake. If you actually work for a game company, then you know how rare this is. And thank you to the comment on this site and Kotaku that pointed out the BBQ connection to the game. It makes so much more sense now ;)
