Uh oh. Hearing this after all the PSP-3000 interlacing screen complaints and that bit about the PlayStation EU site withdrawing mention of the new PSP model...? It kinda makes you wonder, y'know? Are these mere coincidences or not?

Thanks to a comment made by akedewboy in a previous article, we now hear about Amazon suddenly cancelling pre-orders for the PSP-3000. A thread on the PlayStation US forum posts the following cancellation email from Amazon:

Hello from Amazon.com.

We are sorry to report that we will not be able to obtain the following item(s) from your order:

"PSP 3000 Limited Edition 4GB Memory Entertainment Pack"

Though we had expected to be able to send this item to you, we've since found that it is not available from any of our sources at this time. We realize this is disappointing news to hear, and we apologize for the inconvenience we have caused you.

We have cancelled this item from your order. [see full email in Via link below]

Some forum goers have also confirmed this - they've gotten the same cancellation email, and still, no one has found any reason why this has happened. Quite simply, it could be a shortage in Amazon's supply chain, as the email suggests.

Be that as it may, it's sparked quite a bit of speculation among other people. Some believe that these orders were turned down because they placed too late, either that or only a certain specific PSP-3000 color or bundle has become unavailable.

While some point to Amazon as the bottleneck for the cancellations, the other side of the speculation bandwagon points at Sony. Another theory holds that these cancellations have something to do with the PSP-3000's interlacing scanlines, and that Sony is doing a recall.

We also did some digging of our own, and according to this other guy in the PS forums, even BestBuy has cancelled its pre-orders (too bad he doesn't have a source to back him up though).

Various online retailers, however, seem to still have the PSP-3000 available. This leaves us at an impasse. Are these cancellations universal for all stores - all kinds of bundles and colors? With that, we suggest you follow up with whichever retailer or branch you've pre-ordered a unit from. We'll update you guys as soon as we get word.

Thanks to akedewboy for the heads up!

» Have you noticed scanlines in your videos?

I'm thinking about upgrading, since newer mobos have historically been harder to hack.

 » Sony is gay!

I do like the PSP when now they think we're stupid enough to think that think this is a new "Advanced" feature?

Yea right. The people who bought these 3000 series PSPs should go and return it to the store so that Sony can see that we the customers are not stupid and next time they know to sell us quality *****, not this.

 » Hmmm

Better do that for the 360 as well. It's a fact people.

Microsoft admitted their problem and made the owners happy with a 3 year warranty. I am glad for this because I had to have mine fixed and it was still under warranty. Sony just denies everything then secretly recalls everything. This happened at launch with the dead pixel issue when Nintendo said if you have just ONE dead pixel you can exchange it at the store at no cost or hassle. Sony is just cheap because they spend their money too quickly.

 » FACT REMAINS

once you buy something
you dont want to take it back
my x360 has RROD and a new game i really want to play comes out tomorrow
i'll send my 360 back and hope MS get back to me with in the month....phuck that
when you buy a console ,you want it to work...now
you dont want to send it back to claim some warrenty

Hey thats true, Microsoft should have made sure they were sending out a reliable product, but at least they try redeem part of their mistake with their return policy. My friend's 360 got RROD 2 months ago and he called Microsoft. They said they would fix it for free, even though he had no valid warranty (though he had to pay 5 dollars for shipping). The 360 arrived fixed in less than a week (somewhere between 4-6 days). Sony has worst policies. They didn't replace PSPs for the dead pixel problem unless it had lke 15 dead pixels. They gave you the product back fixed in over 3 weeks. PS3 has problems with bluray drive (less than RROD) and for many people t stops reading bluray dics (games, movies,...) and the warranty is just a year. On top of that, Sony does not fix for free if the console is beleived to have stopped working due to overheating, and I'm talking before the one year warranty is over.

And about nintendo I don't know much. Their systems are always reliable and sturdy cuz they actuallly care more and plan in advance.

if you want a new psp for anything less than 15 dead pixels then you expect too much
even big lcd companies wont accept returns unless the dead pixels are taking up more than 2% of the screen
and the fact it still works and is playable means you should not need to take it back
unlike a RROD x360
basically microsoft NEED a good return policy because they're hardware is crap

» The could have taken the Microsoft route.

They could have just kept selling them and pretending that there's nothing wrong kinda like ME, XP, Vista, Xbox360 ect ect ect.

Sony is still selling them and is acting like the screen is BETTER.

Crack is bad for you.

 » Still selling in Canada...

The Ratchet and Clank PSP-3000 bundle is still selling online and in-store at Futureshop in Canada, so if it's a recall then it's not happening yet, at least in the Great White North.

Even so there's no way I'm buying one until they decide to get rid of this 'feature' like they did with actual useful ones (memory card reader, b/w compatibility, extra USB ports) on the PS3 (glad I got in on the MSG4 bundle).

My Phat PSP is doing awesome anyway so there's no reason to really upgrade yet.

This has nothing to do with the PSP screen. But because it's a new item, there are automated scripts that hammer Amazon to buy them and resell them automatically at twice the price on the marketplaces or ebay.
The same happened for the PS3, or for the psp a week ago on amazon Japan.

 » 3000 is not better than 2000

Why do people think 3000 is any better than 2000? The only so called improvement is the screen, Well if you use this program ( XviD4PSP 4115) to convert your videos by sharpening , lighting it up and putting some more colours to it you want see any diffrence. The games look awsome allready, I mean the screen is only 480/272 for fuc k sake!

   Re: TheRockness - 2008-10-25
 » Don't forget the MIC

The 3000 also has a mic which could make a big difference to some people.

A microphone, wow a $0.10 component, props to sony, and also a fu*ked up screen and no homebrew, at least for a while.

   Re: TheRockness - 2008-10-27
 » I guess....

I guess it doesn't make a difference if you're a salt water and vinigar filled spray bottle.
