The package containing the Hong Kong memory card - Image 1Everybody loves a good bargain, but sometimes, cheaper may not actually be better. To test this theory, the owner of the Japanese blog PSP Gadgetz decided to use a cheap 4GB memory stick as his guinea pig, and the results are pretty comprehensive. To start the experiment, the 4GB memory stick was ordered from a Hong Kong retailer who sold it for ¥4000 (about US$ 35), postage included. After receiving the memory stick, it was then tested and was found to check out in the following areas:

  • the memory stick was formatted without problems
  • taking photos and movies with the USB camera
  • music playback
  • MPEG4 and AVC playback
  • M-JPEG playback
  • game archives
  • game demos
  • playback of video recordings
  • saving game data (using Monster Hunter Portable 2)
Despite these, however, the following issues were detected:
  • failure to save/play back contents from P-TV
  • failure to "transfer the tune" that is obtained via SonicStage
We are yet to try out the same type of memory stick that the PSP Gadgetz blogger used, but we're guessing that most of the cheaper varieties may actually be a good buy if you don't demand too much from your PSP. If you're the type to regularly use services like SonicStage and P-TV, though, it looks like it may be a good idea to just stick with official, licensed products.

In the meantime, a couple of videos were taken which shows the tests that the Hong Kong memory stick went through. Give it a look and see which type of memory stick is actually the one for you.

I have a fake ( I think its fake) 2GB SanDisk MS and its fast and reliable and I have no problems. People have established this since the PSP came out.

QJ dropping standards. Although, the lack of 'scene' activity at the minute, who can blame them.

if I'm not mistaken, sonicstage only works with Sony sticks.

   Re: RaiderX - 2007-03-18
 » btw

I'm implying it could be fake. There's no reason the price would make a difference with sonicstage. Either the stick is fake, you tested on a crappy computer, or you did it wrong.

i would rather get a 4gb memory stick that cant do features i dont use anyway for 35 then pay 120 for a 4gb sony memory stick that can do the feature i dont use ..... if i dont use the features i dont really mind of my cheapo memory card cant do it...

   Re: GaveUpTomorrow - 2007-03-18
» you get what you pay for though...

Store bought (real) memory sticks have 5 year warranties on them, so you are good to go for 5 years if you memory stick breaks...But with a fake stick breaks, you're out the $35 (or so) dollars and there is NOTHING you can do about it. Not to mention that on fake sticks (I've tested) the read and write times are about three times as long. For example, when trying to load an ISO on a fake stick, it took about 20 seconds, and lagged in game..where are the real stick loaded in about 3 seconds and had no lag what so ever in game. If you don't mind playing laggy games and having your data deleted periodically for no reason, than a fake memory stick is just for you!

 » of course

it doesn't work with SonicStage because it doesn't have MagicGate encryption.Hmm i should get one. Theres a guy on ebay who sells these on ebay for like $4. My friend got one from him and it works perfectly fine.

Holy am I a noob. This 4 Gig stick looks pretty spiffy, you could hold a lot of homebrew and stuff on it... But when did the PSP get a USB camera? I know they were promising one for the longest time but didn't know it got released!? More Info?

They released it in japan but not it N. America. Its called Chotto shot or something.

» where did you get that from? Could you give us a link.

I would buy one of those for 35 bucks. I have 4 memory sticks. A 32mb real sony, a 256mb real sandisk, and a ebay fake 512mb and 2gig. They all function the same and don't lag. The 512 did crack open but I super glued it and sanded it down so it works again.

 » Pro Duo Ransfer Speeds

I have a Sandisk pro duo 4gb and copying via USB is 5-6MB/s whereas my friends 2GB generic copies to the same PSP with the same USB cable at 0.5MB/s for the same files. You'd need someone with an internal card reader to test the true speed of these pro duos though.

» Fake memory sticks may cost you more than ya' think...

Fake memory sticks may cost you more than the price you paid for it. There have been reports where the fake memory sticks end up breaking the digital camera because they get jammed into the camera and you can't take it out. I only heard of this happenning to cameras but you never know, it might break a PSP as well.

   by itiknila (Unregistered) - 2007-03-18
 » Fake

1. Don't use fakies for Firmware Upgrades.
2. The speed is about the same. I reckon.
3. As long as you don't take it out/in of your PSP, (use USB cable only to transfer) you shouldn't break the fake MS.

   by speedfreak (Unregistered) - 2007-03-18
 » Speed?

Could someone meter the speed of the fakes vs the real sony's for the 4gb sticks?
Ive got a 2gig fake stick which works ok, just a little slow in writing/reading etc (loading on files is slow, reading them on the PSP is fine though).
Id like to know if the 4gigers are any faster ?

   by Staxx (Unregistered) - 2007-03-19
 » speed

I own a fake 4gb mem stick, Had it for about 3 months runs just fine. Yes the transfer speeds are slower then the real one. But who really cares if you have to wait an extra 1 or 2 minutes to load an ISO onto the stick from your computer.

   Re: Ytse (Unregistered) - 2007-03-19
 » aserouithr

People who eventually dont wanna wait for it to take 10 *****ING MINUTES TO FORMAT! It WILL crap out on you and it will start performing slower + slower. Wait 3 more months and see for yourself.

Now the question, I already have a official sandisk 4GB, should I get a FAKE 4GB off ebay or wait a few days and get a fake 8GB off ebay? Id only sue the unofficial stick for films and tv episodes and sue my 4GB official for homebrew.

i got a 4gb card off ebay for£22 and it worked fine for 3 weeks now it wont load anything and my pc cant find it in the psp all it does is make the memory stick light on the psp flash like crazy,if i take it out and put my 1gb in it works fine

   by HIMFan (Unregistered) - 2007-03-19
 » Whoever said...

That sonic stage won't work with anything but a Sony memory stick is an asstard. I have a Lexar and I had a San Disk memory stick and they worked just fine. Plus, I can't think of any other companies that make memory sticks, but if I could I would go out and buy them just to prove you wrong. This 4 GB that they're testing might just have something wrong with it.
