Takka's gpSP removed from QJThe whole Takka-Exophase fiasco has gone too far, and we need to clear up the details before the whole matter gets muddled up by more misunderstanding. First of all, QJ did not intend to cause a ruckus by taking down Takka's gpSP v0.8 kai 2.9 article and by saying that Exophase did not give Takka his permission to use the code to the gpSP app, implying that it was at Exophase's request that we removed the post.

Exophase did not request to have the post and the file taken down. We decided to take down the article on Takka's version of the GBA emulator because of an overwhelming outcry from a lot of users who thought that having the post removed would be best, based on Exophase's expression of displeasure over the said app. And although we understand their sentiment to protect Exophase and his creation, most of these people thought that having the article taken down was what Exophase wanted. In fact, it wasn't what the dev wanted.

Exophase's gpSP was released under GPL, so the use of the code would be "permitted", legal. What Exophase wanted was not to have the file and post taken down. He only wanted Takka to consult with him or inform him about what direction he (Takka) would be taking Exophase's code before grabbing the code and releasing his own version of the app.

We admit that we, too, are at fault. By posting this article, we stated that Takka used Exophase's gpSP code without permission, and we implied that Takka "stole" the code. (Like we just said here, the code to gpSP was released under GPL for common use.) Our statement and our action have now caused a lot of people to take sides.

We are sorry if our actions - based also on the users' reactions - have caused this little misunderstanding between Exophase and Takka to be exaggerated. Again, we're sorry.

In order to avoid a repeat of this incident, we encourage devs who might have issues with their apps or games posted in QJ to contact us.

Here's the changelog to v0.8 kai 2.9:

  • Adding the clock indication/the battery remaining amount indication with the menu
  • When ending it tried to reset to 222MHz
  • When returning to the game from the menu, it tried the button inside the game (It returns being the point in time when the button is released)

If you QJ guys remember the damn readme from GPSP 0.9, Exophase put a simple sentence stating about websites and their posting of news. He said, that the website had to side between the postings of the unofficial builds of GPSP or the official builds. Gosh, read the readme if you dont believe.

 » Yes...!

... and blindly taking that at face value, without actually talking to the dev concerned, is what brought this whole argument on.

The above post was posted *after* consultation with Exophase. He's a nice guy, not some sort of code nazi - he just doesn't like some of the directions that Takka (and maybe others) have taken his code.

I'm really impressed by the way in which QJ is handling this. Taking responsibility for your part in the issue and cleaning it up.

Ah, I didnt know they had talked with Exophase, I thought they didnt, thats why! Well, then its this Takka guy whos gotta talk with Exophase now.

» Wrong license to make stipulations like that...

If he wanted to stop people from doing this, then he should have released the code under a more restrictive license. If the code is GPL, then he has to give everyone that gets a binary the same rights as he has - maybe he should have picked the Perl/Artistic license, which does allow restrictions like that.

 » Oh my..

What can be done about this, hmm? A small misunderstanding occurred and you had to make a decision - wrong or right - it had to be made, and fast. In doing so, you may have overlooked or misunderstood Exophase's past statements.

I, personally, would have done the same thing; Exophase was aggravated by others releasing versions of his GBA emulator without consulting him for his opinion, and I see that as a perfectly logical standing point.

We'll move past events like this and continue on in hopes of a new gPSP release in the near future.

Is why Takka's edit is built off of gpSP 0.8, when 0.9 has been out for some time with vast improvements?

Emulating GBA is one of the most popular things to do on a PSP, along with emulating other systems. I loved games such as LOTR: Return of the King, Shining Force, Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past... etc etc etc. If you've got a PSP, you don't need to bring your GBA everywhere to play your favorite classics. Make sense? To each his own. Ya don't like GBA games that's ok, but I love some of the really good ones! gpSP ROCKS!

 » stupidity

Whatever. Takka's releases, which were every other day for a while, did next to NOTHING for actual gameplay improvements. If this were my code which I freely distributed open source for others, I'd be extremely pissed if some guy was making insignificant changes to the menu and releasing them bi-daily while the author of the software was hard at work making progress on the actual emulator. Stolen praise from idiots that don't know any better is still stolen praise.

The Kai releases are unsolicited crap and the PSP community knows it. I for one don't care if QJ covers them or not.

   by Emo (Unregistered) - 2007-01-07
 » Finally

Finally, its about time that Qj puts back these Kai files for us to all enjoy. This new Kai version is much better then any previous exophase versions. And the reason why kai is going off version .8 instead of .9 is because .9 is soooo much buggier then .8 was. I just wish that exophase would stop all of his crying and let better devs like Kai fix all the bugs and compatability in these releases. Please continue your work Kai as I have only downloaded your versions of the emulator and none of exophase's versioan as yours is always better.

   Re: GaveUpTomorrow - 2007-01-07
 » Interesting...

You've obviously just said that you only download Kai's version and not Exophase's....so how do you even know how Exophase's runs. 0.9 is near perfect...and once again, show some respect, because if there was no Exophase, there would be no Kai.

I'm still not too sure whats going on here! Exophase is upset because someone used the source code that he released? why did he release it if he didn't want people to use it? did I miss something? hmmm... need to go back and check this! anyway, Exophase rocks! so i hope he will look past this and keep developing! gj Exophase ;-)

   Re: GaveUpTomorrow - 2007-01-07
» He let out the source...

so he could prove that he didn't copy the source from another emulator, and so that people could port his emulator to other systems that he wasn't planning on working on.

Why dont you two collaberate on further workings on gpSP and co-write further versions to bring a solid single release to the masses who obviously love playing (both of) your great releases that allow them to ever effeciently run the games they love on the system they adore.

Really, this has gone far. I know that Exophase may have been offended by what Takka did, but is this a reason to spend so much web space on this?
But of course I'm with Exophase. He warned many times about unofficial releases, and nobody listened to him. See what happened now...

» this topic is soooooooo boring.

99.99999 percent of the users of this emu are doing so with illegally obtained ROMS, yet you talk about stealing.

If the new stolen version is any better, the originals coder should steal from it and give us an even better tool for more stealing.

» for the people cannot run kai29

kai29 needs BIOS really extracted from GBA( or NDS/GBA mode).
It's checking the md5 of BIOS.
(md5:a860e8c0b6d573d191e4ec7db1b1e4f6)
In most cases, the md5 of your BIOS is e60e599135009129b288988a1cba91df, I think.
The reason of checking is that other version BIOS cannot be tested by him.

But, takka has released kai291 and kai292 later.
They also check the BIOS, but can run as older versions do.

Actually, i have the bios in both of the 1.5 folders, and still the app wont be working..,.
