Here's the latest on sales of hardware and games for the weeks ending on July 7 and 14. July 14, it has to be noted, is just a day after E3.

The Next gen consoles - Image 1

Recent data gives light to Sony's claim of a doubling in their sales since their US$ 100 price drop. For the sales week ending on July 14 at least, sales for the PlayStation 3 rose 131%, more than double, outrunning the sales of the 360. The Wii rose by 10% but the Xbox hardly moved, selling only 1% more than the previous week.

The Nintendo DS is enjoying a ginormous success; although sales slipped by 5%, you can hardly scoff at more than 97k units sold in a week. The PSP sold only 50k on the same week.

It also looks like the top 5 games in Amazon last July 8 seems to be just as popular to non-online shoppers. The most popular games for each console is Wii Play for the Wii, The Darkness for the Xbox 360, and Ninja Gaiden Sigma for the PS3. Still going strong for the Wii are Mario Party 8 and Resident Evil 4. Slipping into the 360's favor is Transformers, while Gears of War is almost out of the top 10 in 9th place. Transformers also made it to PS3's top 3, and Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Vegas is still popular in second place.

Of the total of 11,878,996 units of next gen consoles that have been sold in America, 55% of those are Xbox 360 units, 31.3% are Wii, and the PS3 accounts for 13.7%. Also, if the PS3 continues to sell more than the 360, and if the Wii continues its current pace, the 360 will be in for some tough times.

I will congratulate sony for the accomplishment. The only things is will the sales continue to grow or will they go back to the norm that they have been doing post launch. I own both the Wii and the PS3. I havent played my Wii for 3 weeks and I have to say one thing, were are the freakin games. Since sony has a strong lineup of games coming soon, sony may take a strong second. Nothing can stop anything thats cheap and affective.

   Re: Quixand - 2007-07-19
 » good for Sony

the fact of the matter is even after the $100 pricecut for the 60GB model the PS3 still remains as the most expensive games console... it is still more expensive than the 360 and Sony still hasn't released the lineup of games that it is boasting of so it technically only still has it's old library of games... but still it outsells the XBox 360 in it's own territory for the said period so that says something about the PS3 and disproves everyone who has been going about declaring doom for the PS3.

"Who will be dumb enough to buy a PS3 when the XBox is cheaper and has more games?"... well XBots that more expensive console with no games as you say just outsold your XBox 360 in your homecourt.

i'm not getting too far ahead of myself... all i'm saying is that all these forcest of doom is worthless... the PS3 can take a punch (it has been beaten senseless since launch) and it is still holding it's own... the negatives regarding the console still hasn't changed but it has began throwing counters... soon enough the PS3's turn to launch an offensive will come and a certain Snake will lead the onslaught.

 » I agree ^

I'm glad to see Sony doing well, or at least doing better, video games are where they are today because of them and it'd really suck to see them go. Plus, I like MS, but I don't wanna know what would happen if they were left alone in the video game market.

I hope MGS4 does lead some kind of PS3 onslaught like you said, because competition is good, especially when part of it is Microsoft. Microsoft + no competition +(equals) bad things

   Re: Quixand - 2007-07-19
 » qw

it will come buddy...

Lair, Heavenly Sword, Drakes Fortune, Rachet and Clank, Warhawk, Haze, UT3, GTAIV, Assassin's Creed, Socom and the rest of the late 2007 lineup will be like the first wave...

after that comes the big guns with MGS4 paving the way for FFXIII, GT5, Killzone 2, Tekken 6, Little Big Planet and even that The Agency thing has got my interest.

all i can say is things are looking up.

 »  Quixand and qw

I agree with you, Dooming the ps3 now when its only 8 months in is not fair, at least wait. And yea i know i hate it when they change the equal sign to a plus sign.
things are looking up, i wonder how many exclusives and new franchises are coming out to ps3 this generation, ant ideas.

   Re: PS3Rider (Unregistered) - 2007-07-21
 » ...

Well finally things are looking good, and if you notice its not actually the games which make the main difference if anything its the price. Only a small percentage of gamers come on to sites like this and actually know about the games, whereas the rest of the gamers just go out and buy a new console.

This basically shows that everything that has been said about the PS3 not being popular is untrue and this proves it because it shows people actually do want the PS3 but they just could afford it before.

once the stock of the 60GB models is cleared, the 80GB model will sell for 500$. Common sense - Sony doesnt want to sit on a pile of 60GB Models noone wants.

80 gb has more things it will sell for 600 im pretty shure man. lets say 60 gb is ps 3.0 while the other is 3.1 lol

actually the 80GB is cost-reduced. So if you value the expense of the hardware, the 60GB should be MORE expensive.

   Re: .......................... (Unregistered) - 2007-07-19

So many people still play there gamecube and PS2 which they believe is still current gen. Another thing being is that there is only approx. 12 million next gen (PS3, Xbox360)(Kind of next gen Gamecube + Remote equals Wii). That really isnt a whole lot of consoles on the market. Comparing it to how many consoles sold during the dominating years of the PS2. Thats why people consider it next gen until more consoles are in the hands of true games.

» ps3 is doing to all wrong

im not against the ps3, but since i have a 360 i dont think ill be getting one. they are both just as strong as the other, and since console exlcusives seem to be gone its retarted to have both. besides xbox live is just to good to get a ps3. online play is a must for me an sony just doesnt have an answer, nor nintedo to xbox live. sony marketing strategy is sheer retarted.

i thought theyd it was brillant to drop price to 500$. but now that the 80 gig is going to not include emotion chip its retarted. that mean some of your old ps1 and ps2 games wont work. besides who cares about a bigger hard drive if you want one go buy a 2.5' hard drive and put it in yourself. its alot cheaper. but i guess the averge person just doesnt realize you can do this. i was going to get a 20gig and drop in a 120 gig hd but since they took it off the market i cant, and i dont want a ps3 without an emotion chip, ill feel like im european

   Re: nastradamus (Unregistered) - 2007-07-20
 » ...

1) 60gb is now the same price that the 20gb and it still has the EE chip so i don't see what your problem there is.

2) they will achieve equivalent backwards compatibility through emulation so EE chip doesn't matter all that much anyway.

3) 80gb will PROBABLY be sold for $500 unbundled once 60gb run out

4) XBL may be good in some aspects for online but is bad in others. for example, there is NO user generated content such as mods, which is why games like UT3 are ps3 exclusives for the time being. i play R6V on the PSN and it works fine for me...

   Re: metalspector (Unregistered) - 2007-07-20
 » well...

Xbox Live is still the bomb cause one pf the best things of online is playing with your friends, on playstation network you won't fidn any friends. The truth is, buy the PS3 if you want a blu ray now and you are very desperate not to way for a blu ray player price drop, or if you are a MGS fanboy. But if you want a console with greater graphics, with better interface, with more exclusives, wit better game lineup, and the best online experience possible with no lag, easy setup, and finding your friends online and play with them isntantly then get a 360 :)

   Re: Wow (Unregistered) - 2007-07-20
 » Seriously

I can guarantee that they will bring the price of the 80GB down to $500. It costs less to make the 80GB PS3's, so they got rid of the more expensive ones, now that they don't waste more money on the 80GB, they can do a price drop and leave it. And yeah they took out the emotion chip, but they put in another thing to allow backwards compatibility. Xbox 360 had zero backwards compatibility at launch. Zero. And online? What are you talking about? PS3 ONLINE IS FREE. And it is just as good as XBL, except you don't have to pay for it. I get zero lag on my system when playing Resistance, and RS:V.

btw fellas the ps3 makes up for the hefty price in having just about everything the 360 doesnt built in, e.g. HD media drive (blu-ray), a larger, built in HDD, wi-fi etc not to mention no brick power supply

   Re: metalspector (Unregistered) - 2007-07-20
 » Truth is...

It's free, or at least if you're smart. Don't know what's wrong with the system but if you create many e-mails you can just make free trials after one expires every month and you have golden membership for free (ain't that good?). But the real reason xbox live is the best is because most of your friends are on xbox live and you can play with them. The PS3, well only one friend of mine owns a PS3 and he has never played online (even if he did, over 15 friends of mine own a 360, all of them have xbox live accounts and I most of the time there's people online when I go play). I mean, Sony blew it, how can their online compete with xbox live? What they could have done is make a cheaper console (not use blu ray) and promote their online service (which they aren't doing, this obviously not attarcting anyone to their service). But Sony come up with HOME... Wow now I can meet peodphiles through playstation network and chat with them... Why don't I go with the nerdy people I don't even know at HOME to the their houses (so gay) or watch a movie in the HOME theater (that's stupid sony, only super nerds would do that which are a few in this world, real people go to real theaters to watch their movies..).

People like you give Sony a bad name, first off PS3 just came out so don't even go on to say its better.
Second XBL seems to be the only thing they can do right with all this news on how its failing and they are losing billions. And on top of that Playstation network is still new and it will get better within time. And the Playstation home is coming out soon which will help the online play. Please don't even go on to say its better than PSN, right now we haven't seen the true potential of PSN.

 » Good news

Hi,

I think this upswing in the sales of PS3 is good news for SCEA and good news for every gamer who invested in a PS3 (myself included). I think it will stay this way as the number of games (doesn't matter if the games that have come out aren't exclusive - just the fact that they are there gives a PS3 owner choice for playing games) on the PS3 has been slooowly, but surely, increasing e.g. Darkness, Ninja Gaiden Sigma (incidentally, I both :) ), Dirt. So a common complaint that the PS3 didn't have many games is not valid anymore. In addition, there are several (apparently) good games coming out in the next several months, e.g. Heavenly Sword, Lair, Ratchet & Clank, Assassin's Creed, GTA4, Haze, Uncharted, Turok (am not sure exactly when Turok's coming out), Two Worlds, EchoChrome, Half-life, Unreal Tournament 3, not to mention big games coming out next year, like Killzone 2, MGS4, the Final Fantasy games, LittleBigPlanet, GT5. All in all, I would say the PS3 owners will be happy to have their purchase vindicated.

At the same time, I would like to say 2007 is a very good year for 360 owners (like me, again :)) - I own both, so looks like my pockets are going be empty come 2009) as well, what with several good games like Mass Effect, Two Worlds, Halo3, GTA4 (have to admit, am a sucker for RPGs, esp action-oriented ones) coming out this year, and games like Fable2, UT3 coming out the next. Also, even with all the negative publicity regarding the hardware issues with the 360, the sales which have been affected only marginally are a testament to the 360's staying power.

All in all, the next few years are going to be great for all hardcore gamers, be they on the 360 side of the fence like MCS, or on the PS3 side like Folding Junkie, or people like me who have one leg on each side.

Peace everyone!
MTK

   Re: Folding Junkie! - 2007-07-20
 » Nice Post!

Actually it was a very good post!

But, while I admit to being an adamant fan of the PS3, comparing me and MCS is asinine. I only post on articles listed on ps3.qj and the only posts of mine that you will find on xbox360.qj are from articles posted on BOTH the ps3 and 360 sides of qj.net.

My posts rarely include anything bad about another console and the only time that they do is when I am posting to someone like MCS. I have no qualms with the 360 or with the majority of those owning one. Someday I may buy one but I don't plan to anytime soon.

That is where I stand right now. MCS is a fool in %99 of his posts. I really would not care that he act that way except when I glance at the top of the page and see that the article that I am posting about isn't on xbox360.qj I realize that he is doing nothing but trolling.

To each their own! He made his choice and I have made mine. How we go about telling people our choice is drastically different and the comparison is dismaying.

My two cents.

Hi Folding Junkie,

Actually, just after my post, I realized that my comparision of yours to MCS wasn't really spot-on, as far as trolling goes, and that I don't recall seeing you trolling on 360 forums the way MCS does on most Sony posts.

By the time I thought of this, though, I got caught up in work (it was a weekday after all :)) and I didn't get a chance to add to my post. After that, I was too busy the entire weekend to even get a chance to look at my Computer.

But you are right: Comparing you to MCS was rather unfair. As far as MCS goes, the best comparision for him would be Xman. Unfortunately, both fall on the same side of the fence.

Anyway, I do apologize for this rather unfair comparision between you and MCS.

Regards,
MTK

 » accolades for sony

I'm happy that Sony decided to reduce the price of the 60gb PS3 console just now. It's good timing for me.

I decided just a couple of days ago to buy a game console. I started my research with no preconceived notions about the relative merits or strengths and weaknesses of the current crop of game consoles. My only prior experience in gaming consoles was with the original Nintendo more than 20 years ago.

I was leaning toward the Microsoft X-Box 360 Elite at first because of the titles available and because of XBL, but after a several more hours of research I decided that the PS3 was more appealing to me for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is the ability to run Linux and have access to the Cell BE processor for my own programming efforts.

But I can definitely say that had it not been for this price cut, I could not realistically have justified the purchase of a PS3 right now.

So, accolades to Sony for the technical characteristics of the PS3, but especially for moving the price within my reach. I hope this does a lot to boost sales of the PS3.

   Re: giton (Unregistered) - 2007-07-21
» Sony sales of PS3 rise by another 1 unit...

So there you have it. Sony's price cut is working to increase sales. At least by one today, that is.

I just bought my PS3, together with a Blu-Ray DVD remote, an additional wireless controller, and two titles, "Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion" and "Resistance: Fall of Man". Should be here next Tuesday. I'm looking forward to the upcoming releases of "Lair" and "Final Fantasy XIII".

Way to go, Sony.

 » hah

The 60gb is 499, the 80gb will be 499. There is no way Sony is going to raise the price. Unless it is a bundle. As long as this price holds firm, the PS3 will continue to sell well. The 360 may have some better weeks, especially when Halo 3 comes out but I see PS3 staying either neck and neck or a little ahead of it from now on. There is just no reason to own a 360 over a PS3 unless you really love Halo. I personally think Warhawk is a lot more fun and has better gameplay than Halo 3 but thats my opinion. I still can't understand how the Wii is beating them both. Both the 360 and PS3 are awesome compared to the Wii.

I would guess that Wii most likely beats the X-Box 360 and PS3 in sales mostly because of the lower price.
