During the tail end of November, the latest official PSP firmware version (5.02) was released and subsequently decrypted. It doesn't look like a big enough update to warrant an M33 release, but two separate custom firmware versions of the 5.02 firmware have since popped up on the QJ.NET forums. The first comes from XiaoFeiChong. According to the forums, this is a recompiled M33 firmware. The most interesting thing about this release, however, is that it does not support backups. No ISOs, no CSOs, no nothing. If you want to run CFW but don't want the lure of piracy, you may consider giving this a try. The next one is from a group calling themselves Team Omega. Again, it's 5.02, but it still has support for backups. There's also some "new support for PSX games" mentioned on the forum post along with bug warnings for the pops, but the explanation is a bit hard to wade through. If you update to this, be aware that a lot of your homebrew and plugins will end up broken, as is usually the case with firmware updates. If you want to learn more about these two custom firmware releases, I recommend clicking on their respective forum links below before you download and install them on your PSP. Still, don't forget to keep a jigkick battery handy. Lets wait for an official M33 release from Dark_AleX, plain and simple.

I can't find anything interesting in an unofficial firmware that can't play my legal backups, anyways.

I love how you say your legal backups considering A.) there's no such thing as legal backups because companys don't allow you to create backups, and B.) There's no legal software to create backups.
Happy Holidays all!

Don't call it garbage, locobrown. And Daistaar, backups are legal if you own the original copy of a game.

I'm happy to see a CFW creator that appears to be showing some respect. I have said before several times now, you can hate Sony as much as you please. However, disrespecting the game developers is a no no in my book. I 100% support homebrew, don't misunderstand.
Anyway, I'll be happily installing XiaoFeiChong's CFW. ;)

» 5.02 doesnt warrant a m33 update
its already m33-4 meaning any changes from 5.01 are more than likely already added
this is purely cosmetic for most part
for those who like seeing 5.02 in system

» nice effort
i sure appreciate the effort, but i'll stick to m33 for now. i got my psp running very smoothly and it does everything i expect it to do.
add some extra features to attract new users, divx, flac, ... support

» The piracy issue
Could easily be sorted if Dark_Alex allows 2 installs, one with illegal backup loading and 1 without, its then the users choice, personally I use backup games mainly because I prefer to have all the games I own on my memory card and hate carrying discs with me all the time, however certain people may respect the devs and pick the non backup version, its so simple and something DAX should consider doing, its not that difficult to impliment, either way the first CFW mentioned in this post is quite a useful one considering...

» "respect the devs and pick the non backup version"
You could still buy the discs to support the devs, and create your own backups. I also like putting the games on the memory stick, to save battery life and load times.

That is fine. However, there is a positive side and a negative side.
Positive: The feature is awesome. It gives us a choice of faster load times and less fuss with UMDs on the go. People who respect developers will buy the UMD and just create a back up for personal use, keeping the UMD for a primary source.
Negative: People abuse this feature to the point that its positives are made redundant.
It's no wonder many PSP games don't make profit for the developers or producers... since many just pirate games.
Releasing the 2 versions will change nothing. Since pirates will still have an option and would opt for it. There would also be no reason now, since there are CFWs that allow ISO/CSO use. Biggest part of CFW users would download the ISO version, since most CFW users just download games...
The only way it would work is if more features came out, to make it worthwhile updating to a ISO/CSO non-compatible firmware.

I don't think that word means what you think that it does.

maybe you're the one who needs to look up redundant
when a point is made redundant it is no longer needed or relevant

is if you there was key generator implemented that would generate IDs from your UMDs to use on your PSP. If that were encrypted on the CSO it woulf only work on your PSP. This would make the file null on another PSP which would make sharing the file worthless and still work on your MS and PSP so you wouldn't have to carry multiple UMDs and still have your official discs. If Sony created an official UMD Ripper, it would include this and you can make legitimate backups that would be tailored and locked to your PSP. This is when you anti DRM people jump in...

What's the deal with the developer of that emu anyways? Did he go on vacation or something? Also, what do you mean final? Surely the last version (which ever one that was) was too slow to be called "the one before last"?

Yeah, I dont think we will be seeing the final version for a while. They first announced that it would be done around the end of october, and then sometime near x-mas, and still nothing. So who knows..

The Developers say in Jan 09, that is Beta 2
@UltimaArmorX, this project was taken over by a new group of Coders, who seem very skilled, and Stormin Norman has returned and is guiding them, they have made quite a difference already to the DaedalusX64 N64 Emulator Beta 1 release, go and check it out, its runs alot more games now, and quicker :o)

Maybe you should try redownloading the 5.02 update.
Gawd, I wish I had a time machine. Then I could go back to the days of PSP Homebrew before all the idiots came out to play...

I think that its good and all that others are trying to create custom firmware, but seriously, dark alex pretty much perfected it and then some. I don't think anyone else can do any better.

» That is the thing though isnt it?
To most people out there now, Dark_AleX is a "Supreme God" who only gives us perfection that no one else is capable of.
This way of thinking is just plain wrong and a little sad. There are so many other great developers out there willing to give something like a CFW to the Homebrew community. Some may even be better than DAX (remember that in the beginning OE and M33 were much the same as the newer CFW's now - many flaws and bugs), but of course they are shunned by everyone because no one can match the "super powers of the Supreme DAX".
Dark_AleX is good. There is no doubt about that, but a lot of people need to stop following him blindly and actually think for themselves for a change.
An example of what I am saying about new CFW Dev's being shunned is when M33 first emerged. Remember how everyone was saying "M33 is so crap. Dark_AleX forever!!", and M33 turned out to include DAX all along.

What a useless crock of *****!
Pirates (such as myself) will stay on 5.00 M33 and continue to pirate.
Anti-pirates will stay on 5.00 M33 and continue to not pirate.
