DAX's Homebrew coder Art dropped by the QJ.NET PSP Development Forum and shared an application created by Dark AleX that allows programmers to access the PSP Slim & Lite's TV out capabilities using component, composite, and d-terminal cables. More than a full program, this one is more of a "Hello World" proof that the hack can be done.

Art added that the resolution for composite cables is 720x503 while using component cables will yield a resolution of 720x480. The program has not been tested formally with D-terminal cables but it basically uses the same code as that of the component's. Art added:

To use it in your code, you just have to replace the call to sceDisplaySetMode with the call to my custom function pspDveMgrSetVideoOut (which calls sceImposeSetVideoOutMode, which at the end calls sceDisplaySetMode), and be aware of the bigger resolution.

This really is an exciting development especially that Sony has reiterated time and again that certain cables can only be used for certain functions. Keep checking back here at QJ.NET to know if this work-in-progress application has been made into a fully functional homebrew application.

"Art added that the resolution for composite cables is 720x503 while using composite cables will yield a resolution of 720x480."

^ Might need to fix that sentence.

w1n. This reminds me of the of when I bought my composite cable for my slim:

Retailer: You know miss, that cable won't let you play games, only movies.

Me: Oh, really? You must not have any faith in DAX then.

Retailer: No, it won't display homebrew either.

Me: Not yet (smile).

I seriously didn't think it would be DAX though that would come through with this, though I guess I should have guessed it. Reguardless of if you stay around in the PSP scene or not, ty for cleaning up all these loose ends so to speak before you go. Thank you.

Right... And we're supposed to believe that story? You had me going until you made two big mistakes...

a. The retailer knew who Dark Alex was... Retailers are noobs. They know nothing of homebrew.

b. The clerk called you "miss", suggesting that you're female. There's no such thing as a female gamer. The geek race is not lucky enough to have such beings :P

Heh heh. I'm just messing with you.

Ya, I remember when people were saying, "Oh noes, the PSP Slim won't get h4xxed", and I always replied, "riggghhhttt.... Even though we're not going to have custom firmwares, we'll still have eloaders and HEN."

But hey, turns out I was wrong for the better! :D

Also, not to troll, but why don't we just use remote joy? We get better graphics and we don't have to buy a progressive scan TV. OR... does this application allow for us to play on a regular TV? o_O

Finally, I was right, Dark Alex has unretired again...

So, his history is: joined/retired/joined/retired/joined
/retired/m33ed/retired/joined/retired/ and just recently joined again.

His homebrew social security benefits are really gonna be screwed up by the time he hits 63...

you are an idiot
I am a retailer and I know who DAX is.
do you live life on judgments that are completely wrong. or does diarrhea just spew from your head at random moments?

Thank you for your hate post! Do you have the ability to detect a joke? At the very worse, I think the phrase "Heh heh, I'm just messing with you" should help clue you in that I was stating a joke. I know that some retailers know about dax, and that there are plenty of female gamers...

Please, read this:
joked, jok·ing.
%u2013noun 1. something said or done to provoke laughter or cause amusement, as a witticism, a short and amusing anecdote, or a prankish act: He tells very funny jokes. She played a joke on him.
2. something that is amusing or ridiculous, esp. because of being ludicrously inadequate or a sham; a thing, situation, or person laughed at rather than taken seriously; farce: Their pretense of generosity is a joke. An officer with no ability to command is a joke.
3. a matter that need not be taken very seriously; trifling matter: The loss was no joke.
4. something that does not present the expected challenge; something very easy: The test was a joke for the whole class.
5. practical joke.
%u2013verb (used without object) 6. to speak or act in a playful or merry way: He was always joking with us.
7. to say something in fun or teasing rather than in earnest; be facetious: He didn't really mean it, he was only joking.
%u2013verb (used with object) 8. to subject to jokes; make fun of; tease.
9. to obtain by joking: The comedian joked coins from the audience.

Yes... You can. If your PC has Video Out cable
and hooked up to your TV set, Remote Joy
makes perfect sense.

someone should ban that guy that posted "second"!

Anyway, this thing is beautiful. I confirm that it works with my component cables on my 52 inch sony bravia, Completely fullscreen.

But this worries me in a way, because the image is not very clear with either component or composite cables....might we see a release of a psp to tv HDMI cable??

 » PAL?

Does this mean that the NTSC signal can be converted to PAL and we will soon be able to hook up our PSP to a regular PAL TV?
That's the only thing that keeps me from buying a slim. I have a regular PAL TV and I'm not gonna buy a new TV just for the PSP.

   Re: iamback(unregistered) - 2007-10-15
 » pal -> ntsc

unless I'm mistaken, I do think that given enough time, we can eventually get this software converter. I think "swap magic" discs that play "imported" discs convert pal to ntsc by using software, BUT, I might be wrong...

 » file

open the download that they link to on this page. It's a compressed file.

Inside you'll see the folder release. double click that folder. You'll see 2 new folders:

bin and src

src is the sourcecode which is unusable on your psp and released for other developers, open bin instead.

You'll now see a folder called dvesample. COPY THAT FOLDER AND ITS CONTENTS TO YOUR PSPGAME directory!

then hook it up to your tv and see the first fullscreen homebrew application

 » Question

Can this be turned into a prx? Because I have spent a hundred plus to get my slim to show my games on my televisions (component and svideo) and I was really disappointed. I can’t stand to see that stupid little boxed screen with all that black empty space around it. If I can recall correctly, didn’t sony’s ad show a guy playing the game on a flat wide screen at full screen?

   Re: iamback(unregistered) - 2007-10-15
 » ...

I believe that if your TV can force 3:4 ratios into 9:16 widescreen mode, you can get a full screen wide display. I think the box you see is because you are seeing everything in 3:4 mode...

But, I'm no expert. If only DAX spoke fluent English... :(

Maybe you can help us, Mr. Robert Court?

 » to pdave

I would just wait, dude. Helloworld is the initial stage of something great. Always. i never saw the commercial you're referring to.

but take notice that the screen is extremely fuzzy when using psp to tv cables regardless of which variety.

I think that's gonna be the next serious problem...we'll have fullscreen support for homebrew, but the quality will be horrible...we need an HDMI cable.

   Re: pdAve - 2007-10-15
 » thanks Hissatsunowaza

Man I can be a real noob at times. Moments before I saw this was up at qj, I was literally saying to myself that I wish there were some plugin that would enable fullscreen tv out. Oh well, I guess I'll keep hoping that the gifted ones will work their magic and we'll have fullsreen at last. Thanks to all
   by Nine_Masquerade - 2007-10-15
 » So

So this is just a proof of concept that games can be displayed at fullscreen with all cables? We composite cable owners still cannot play our homebrew on the tv yet, right?
thanks

   Re: Missa - 2007-10-15
» Not yet, but over the horizon

It is a proof of concept, but it also contains code to help people add this feature to their homebrew unless I am mistaken. Before we see something happen with the xmb, maybe we will see some homebrew programs which will include the code themselves to allow TV out.

   Re: iamback(unregistered) - 2007-10-15
 » good news

No, not at all, nine_masquerade. In the article, they state that it works with composite as well. In fact, it looks like composite gets better resolution even!

So, no, it's not just for component, if that's what you're asking. sorry, but I'm not sure if you're asking whether it's only for component ("all cables"/"composite owners can't play"), or whether you're just asking if homebrew in general works. Either way, no, homebrew doesn't work yet, but yes, composite works with hello world.

   Re: pdAve - 2007-10-15
» homebrew programs which will include the code

I would really love to see this made into a prx, because I would like to play my umd's in fullscreen as well. Im not a psp coder, so I dont know what all is involved in making a se plugin, but I would opt for the plugin format over implementing this into eboots or homebrews.
   by Hissatsunowaza - 2007-10-16
 » CFW

I'm thinking that the next CFW is gonna have built in support so I wouldn't even worry about the prx just yet ;).

   Re: iamback(unregistered) - 2007-10-16
 » yes

but, dark alex has retired again. again. again. again. again. What makes you think he'll jump in and un-retire? That's too un-dark-alexy for him to unretire!
