how does this matter at all? If your gonna submit some news an you at least make it relevant to the present day. I mean, 2011? Thats 4 years away.
Well with that logic, we shouldn't bother weather forecasts either, since they don't pertain to the present day. This matters because it shows how trends are pointing more towards portable gaming. And by the way, 4 years isn't as long a time as you think, especially considering that we get new generations of consoles every 4-5 years.
But the title of this news post is poorly done. It makes it sound as if the PSP and the DS will still be the dominant portables by 2011, which will most definitely not be the case.
You are right Mr. Andrew the topic should say handhelds will dominate by 2011. I believe this is true, as handheld will only get better and more powerful and people will always need something to entertain them on the go. However handhelds will have to fight the mobile phone market and the laptop market.
avenger.hacker.googlepages.com
pretty much the same route that laptops are taking then.
Smaller is always better unless your a bloke :P
What?
laptops will alwats be weaker than desktops
*always
Yes they will always be weaker. However it's a fact that most every day software, including most regular business software can be run on even a 1GHz PC with 256MB ram.
Laptops are indeed becoming more popular, and will continue to do so with the average consumer.
Gamers, and Internet hosting companies are not the average consumer.
Yes you could list off a tonne more that can't use 1GHz and 256MB RAM, like auto cad users/graphic designers, and on and on, but still, none of them are the "average consumer".
what about win vista?
I'd be very surprised if by 2011 either one of those hand-helds is any more supported than the GBA is right now.
noone uses portable gaming devices now, and noone will use them in the future.
I do
Yeah ok I play the PSP no matter where I am. I even have 2 XBoxs and I play my PSP instead while at home.
Good for you. Now, go and get a life :)
Next gen handhelds may well eat more into normal console sales. In the near future DVD sized flash memory will become more competitively priced with DVD, displays should be even crisper (and hopefuly be widescreen), ergonomics even better. Probably also have an accelerometer onboard. Maybe even some new innovation to provide touch screen like functionality (although I'd much rather have better ergonomics & the accelerometer).
I think in this area sony may well have an advantage over nintendo, AS LONG AS sony finally *gets it* and understands that they need to make a product for consumers! No PS2 re releases and fix the ergonomics of the PSP!
how about making that toast on your psp5?
What about toast and a teasmaid. Tea an toast when you wake up. Just what I would want from a handheld console.
iDEAL
In its current state I don't look forward to the PSP holding back portable gaming device functionality. If Sony won't give the PSP the redesigning it clearly needs, someone else (I'm hoping Microsoft) will step up, and offer a better solution.
These are the adjustments the PSP needs to stay competitive, if not, adjustments someone else will offer.
* Dual Analog Sticks, and two more trigger buttons
* IPOD-like hard-drive capacity (40+ GB range)
* 128 Megabytes of main memory
* Bluetooth, and improved wifi
* Premium Cellphone Functionality with Microphone
* 3+ Megapixel Built-in Camera
* Mobile Broadband support
* 20+ hour full workload battery capacity
* Touchscreen
* Bluetooth Keyboard/Mouse accessories offered optionally for use with web browser, and first person shooters.
* If included, free up the UMD format so people are given the option to record their own content
* Better compatible software options that not only offer a solid operating system for general users, but also encourage people to make personalized homebrew. Of course, all this would include such things as video voice chat, and a solid web browser with all multimedia functions included.
* Support for various flash media formats of all sorts, not just Sony proprietary, as was done on the PS3
* Motion sensitivity, as well as optional rumble pack accessory.
Riiiight.
They can't get the thing to sell now at $200, you think they'll get it to sell at $1000???
If we're talking by 2011, getting all such features into a portable device with competitive price range, will not be a problem. Apple's IPhone, a similar reaching device, will be released this June for $600. Many good smart phones already go for such a price. I can see Sony upping the ante with premium featured PSP for around 300 bucks, certainly by 2011.
@ PSP needs redesign BAD:
good ideas, but how do you make a handheld with all this functions? I mean, sure you can include Bluetooth, cell phone, camera...
but this all will suck up the battery very hard...
20 hours gaming time? no way......
the problem is, that the processor and so on gets better nearly every day, but better batteries are not developed.....
:(
just not fast enough to catch up with the latest technology.
Sony can be resourceful when it really wants to. It seems only reasonable that Sony take the lead with such a premium featured device. It would make them undisputed king of tech. Not even Apple would be able to compete with their devices. If Sony won't take what is obviously the next step in synergistic technology, I'm hoping Microsoft will. People will go with whatever device is most sexy, while offering all-in-one on the go options, and a high-degree of personalized customization (including homebrew modding).
I've changed, and added a few more necessary features to the above list.
** 128+ Megabytes of main memory
** If it is to be a PSP2, then of course, next gen graphics, as well as backward compatibility with PSP, PS1, and PS2 (PS2 media can be sold in whatever new portable media format Sony chooses to go with).
** Optional accessory kit that allows users to display their PSP2 to a high definition screen in 480i/p, 720i/p, and 1080i/p through use of an HDMI, or composite output
** Then of course, never forget, that while offering this great abundance of necessary options, the design of the device must remain above all, very sleek, and sexy.
the title IS misleading. But im sure that the ds will be old by 2011. the psp would still live on i think. (Dont get pissed, I own both ds and psp and personally the ds loses the fun factor VERY quickly.)
I always thought it. Then, with more and more sexy games, you will need your privacy...
