PSP VS DS

The gaming community has choices these days that were pretty much unheard of a decade ago. Lucky for all of us, we have a lot of options to choose from. There are a lot of gaming platforms out there, but only two seems to be really slugging it out in the game handheld arena: Sony's PSP and Nintendo's DS. How do we measure them against each other? Graphics? Number of games? Let's try sales figures!

Remember the saying, "A picture is worth a thousand words?" we say, these stats show a million! All sales figures are as of July 30, 2006.

Nintendo DS
Japan - 10.3 million
US - 5.8 million
Europe - 6.2 million
Australia - .2 million
Canada - .4 million
Worldwide - 22.9 million

PSP
Japan - 3.9 million
US - 5.1 million
Europe - 4 million
Australia - .15 million
Canada - .4 million
Worldwide - 13.37 million

What does that mean for the game market? People are willing to try on a game handheld that is considerably less in the graphics department but high in gameplay and innovation part. We see a paradigm shift towards gameplay as opposed to high graphics.

Hopefully, after seeing this, Sony will do something either to the present PSP or the future one. Nintendo will have to continue with being innovative and creative in its gameplay or they'll lose their customers. Either way, us gamers will always win. It's a beautiful world after all.

Thanks to
Sttrangler for all the work of compiling these figures!

Good, at last people are seeing the PSP for what it is. A boring, terribly designed, lackluster piece of crap with nothing but crap games. The DS has some of the best games I've ever played. @1, I disagree. The DS games are extremely good and imaginative. The PSP games are pretty awful.

Sure, a lot of PSP games are crap -- but look at the DS, a lot of their games are crap too. I was just at ds.ign.com, and if you look at the reviews, the PSP and DS have about the same number of "good" games.

That said, I've played a few games on the PSP that truly kick ass. Syphon Filter, Daxter, Valkyrie Profile, Breath of Fire, GTA, XMEN, Tales of Eternia, Popolocrois...

Both systems have their good points and just because something is popular doesnt mean its good, FIFA rockets up the charts year after year and its a load of old bollocks.

Well they DS is pretty much just another gameboy while the psp is a next-gen handhold all the things you can do on a psp make it a much better system counting only the "offical" games a system can play doesn't show everything it can do like the psp's emulator scene is just amazing

DUH!! This article is DUMB!. OF COURSE! the DS will sell better than the gorgeus PSP. Because is way cheaper than the PSP and people like cheap because they are poor bastards. And because the handheld basicly dedicated for kids. There are a lot of kids out there and parent would buy the toy for them

Thats my two cents. If you dont agree you can go to hell.

» Fanboys come out the woodwork... *rolls eyes*

It seems whenever people put up the DS to the PSP the fanboys just cant help but come out the woodwork. Its sad really.

I have been saying this for years and so has nintendo. People who buy solely based on graphics don't always get good games. Not to say that neither the DS nor the PSP has terrible games! They BOTH have terrible games.

Why doesn't anyone realize this? Instead, they base their arguments on graphics and how powerful a system is. Who cares? Its the GAMES that make the systems! The PS2 is the weakest system (anyone who argues this is gonna lose) out there, but it has some of the best games out there!

The DS and PSP have great futures, and I am one of the lucky few that can have a taste of both sides and enjoy the greatness that each provides. Its really sad that some people can't look past their own ego's and look at the real issue at hand.

Both are great systems, get over it. Instead of wasting your life arguing different.

Game on!

Hey, number 10, you must be seriously retarded. In decimals, you can remove any zeros that are on the right side. So really, the DS sold more. In terms you can understand, DS didn't sell .02 million down under, they sold .2 million, whitch is equal to .20 million, go back to your little grade school.

» ds is cheaper than psp

the ds sells better than the psp because is cheaper and because it has been out on the market first, not because of that gameplay graphics bs

   by Xfacter - 2006-08-18

PSP is better because it sold 13.37 million units.

» Where are these figures coming from???

I saw much bigger numbers on the PSP on various sites. It was up by a million in the US last time I checked and in Europe it was close behind.

These numbers show the complete opposite. Doesn't make much sense. Just look at VGcharts.org and you will see completely different numbers. I am not saying VGcharts numbers are correct but I am 100% positive the numbers you are posting are incorrect.

Actually IGN reported 20 million PSPs shipped while the DS has shipped 21 worldwide (YES SHIPPED):

http://uk.psp.ign.com/articles/725/725264p1.html

Also please note that the DS had a huge advantage in time. They have one extra Christmas (both the US and UK) and a few months on top of that head start. Everyone knows sales are about 10 times on christmas than any other time. If you go by this you would realize that the PSP is selling faster worldwide than the DS has.

If the PSP drops in price this holiday season, prepare to see it taking off leaving the DS in the dust. Not that they will take DS customers, since the PSP is a completely different market, they will just do great with sales.

They both have their positive and negatives. I myself love the PSP, its perfect for everything I need it for and couldn't see myself playing the types of games on the DS, mini games and brain age stuff are not what I need, my brain gets tested enough at my university, that doesn't mean DS has nothing to offer tho.

I do bet that a large percentage of the DS owners are 15 and under though at least in the United States though because I hardly ever see anyone else with them, they usually always have a PSP.

"What does that mean for the game market? People are willing to try on a game handheld that is considerably less in the graphics department but high in gameplay and innovation part. We see a paradigm shift towards gameplay as opposed to high graphics."

Or, just maybe, did you ever think that some people can't afford a PSP? The DS is much cheaper. I have many friends who wish they had a PSP instead f their DS, but they couldn't afford it at the time.

You guys sure put a lot of thought into this one. Morons.

 » I have both

both DS and PSP are good.

i do have both of them, but I leave DS to my friend and take PSP with me always because of it's functions

better sound better video, usb, wlan, homebrew. and a game or two..... that's more than enough for me.

i'm not the game-only type.

 » So much misinformation..

If you go to where the original figures were posted it said the PSP Europe figures were ESTIMATES, but I guess you *****got fanboys wont care, or have the brains to understand.
