Daedalus R12 - Image 1

Daedalus, an N64 emulator.">StrmnNrmn has posted a short Daedalus update on his blog today. While there's no new release just yet, this is still important as it addresses the dynarec issue found in Super Smash Bros.

According to StrmnNrmn, the source of the dynarec problem has finally been identified. It had taken longer than expected, but it's been isolated and after a little experimentation StrmnNrmn has come up with a temporary workaround. Here's a snip of StrmnNrmn's post:

With the fix in place SSB is running at around 30-40fps in game on the PSP, which is very exciting.

Now that I've identified the problem my next job is to come up with a permanent, robust solution to help fix similar problems in other roms. I also want to add some improved checks in the debug build to help spot other situations where this problem arises.

It seems Daedalus will be getting even better when R12 comes out. Be sure to keep checking back here on QJ.NET for the latest updates.

Thanks to 420tongboker420 and dylstermanster for the tip!

Jeeeez guys! Get a life, this is interesting news, if you're so interested in using the product, then take the time to read fix releases, or any other notes written by the developer about the product. Stop being selfish and grow up, Strmn Nrmn has obviously been working hard to find the bug and fix it for all of you ungrateful little people, the least you could do is be thankful, or atleast curtious.

Yeah! That's what we were all waiting for from the release of Monkey64! SSB is one of my all-time faves as well - so this will be awesome!
   by IDEA (Unregistered) - 2007-06-10
 » gotta an idea here

I really cannot wait for this to be released. But, i also have other requests. How about making a "ad-hoc" mode for people to play w/ each other. This would make it so much more fun rather than playing SSB against the computer. This is BY FAR my favorite homebrew app. and i think that this little feature would make it even more enjoyable. Also, when StrmnNrmn gets goldeneye running faster, that would be really fun with friends and/or relatives. But before he gets multiplayer, i would rather see an increase in compatibility and speed. Then add those little extras.

Ok not just to take a shot at Idea above me but people, some games are just now reaching a playable level with few or minor visual glitches. An you want Adhoc or infustructure play. Let him get most games, if not all of them running at lets say a steady 40 frames before he even considers putting online play in. That would just take up more proccesing power and ram. Slowing the games down unless he finds a way around this. So drop the subject for now, he has probably seen this idea a hundred times. But he has been making a lot of progress i could see the posibility of limited netwprking capabilities for some games, by November or december at the rate he has been going. At the latest the first 4 months of next year sometime. Or he may never put it into the emu because he doesnt know how (chances are he does). If this happens someone will mod it an post it on the net with his capabilitie.

this seems very exciting, i agree that if he can implement multiplayer of some sort, this could turn to be the best, if not already the best homebrew app in psp history. Oh man, just thinkin about online goldeneye or perfect dark , or even mario kart is makin me shake. LMAO we'll b playin online mario kart just like the DS people!! hahahahah great work!

   Re: dorkdork777 (Unregistered) - 2007-06-11
 » ...

That would be awesome, but as the guy two above you said, he'll need to get those games running at a steady 30-40 fps before he gets any sort of wireless in.

yeah thats cool but we -20fps away.

   Re: Ify (Unregistered) - 2007-06-10
 » Nope

No, the N64 is 50 FPS max but most games even on the N64 ran between 30-40 fps. As long as the game is over 24 fps which is a motion picture it will be playable +) Hopefully it will be about 24 fps with sound

   Re: sigh (Unregistered) - 2007-06-10
 » sigh

lfy is correct. plus with the motion blur on the psp screen 30 frames would be more then needed.

» very good news to hear

SSB is one of my favorite games ever. If I can play it on a handheld at full speed, I will be one happy gamer. Thank you StrmnNrmn!

   Re: Strangler (Unregistered) - 2007-06-10
 » re

30-40 fps? I really doubt that. Mario 64 only runs at 18 in many parts of the game.

   Re: nunya_business (Unregistered) - 2007-06-10
 » @Strangler

Mario 64 is more graphically intensive than Smash. For example, look closely at SSB's characters; they have very simple geometry compared to the N64 titles they come from. I doubt that their levels have nearly as many polygons as Mario's levels either. Additionally, you'll notice that SSB uses many two-dimensional sprites. All of this amounts to far less strain on the RAM and processing power.

Besides, I doubt StrmnNrmn, the emulator's sole programmer, would lie!

 » Dust?

You'll find that most games only require 30FPS.
(which is brilliant enough).

Try converting a movie/game video to
25FPS and you'll see that there isn't much difference
between 25FPS and 60FPS..

If the game did run at full speed though [60FPS],
then it should cut down on loading times or lag.

   Re: fuzzy (Unregistered) - 2007-06-10
 » Status now?

What's the status on Daedalus now? I haven't kept up with it. Are there any games that are playable right now? I consider playable to be 25 FPS without sound, unless it's a game that requires sound for you to know what to do.

   Re: bc (Unregistered) - 2007-06-11
 » i don't think so

mario64 plays fairly well with sound on r11 and frameskips. It may means 30 FPS WITH SOUND! He should hurry and release it soon.
