Dark AleX releases 3.71 fatmsmod for 3.80/3.90 M33 custom firmware - Image 1

Ba-da-bing, ba-da-boom. If there's a hitch, Dark AleX is here to stitch. And the revered custom firmware developer presents a quick patch to allow the loading of 3.71 fatmsmod.prx for quicker memory stick reading on DAX' 3.80 and 3.90 M33 custom firmwares. So naturally, that's to all users of Sony's PlayStation Portable running those the author's CFWs.

Please be reminded that this is the patch to allow the loading of the aforementioned memory stick module, fatmsmod.prx, on your more modern custom firmware. So we repeat: this isn't a full fix for those who find memory stick reading irritatingly slow. You're going to have to get your hands dirty and flex your psardumping muscles to transfer a 3.71 fatmsmod.prx over to your targeted 3.80/3.90 M33-powered PSP.

The archive you see listed below carries an EBOOT that will automate the flashing process for the fatmsmod.prx you've transferred, plus form a way to make the newly flashed PRX more compatible for the recent custom firmware. There's a tradeoff to this, however.

As QJ.NET reader akadewboy points out in the comments below, you will experience a speedup in memory stick loading. But you may also notice how your stored pictures, MP3 files, and videos are no longer being read properly as they should. Some people have claimed this has happened to them, so be wary of the possible consequences.

If you do decide that it's worth a try anyway,  remember to read the bundled documentation before planning your next steps out.

UPDATE:

Thanks to a tip from Torch, we've just learned that Dark AleX has updated the patch with the following new information:
  • Added to the installer the check of correct checksum of fatmsmod.prx. Use only encrypted or decrypted version of file.
  • Music, videos, etc now work.
As we mentioned earlier, this still takes a bit of work to get up and running, so folks may want to keep checking the forums for additional information.

 » Warning!!!

People have reported that their ISO's and CSO's are running much better, HOWEVER they cannot listen to their MP3s, look at their pictures, or watch their videos anymore.

Re: Ceasar S. (QJ. NET Staff) - 2008-02-13
 » Really?

If so, then thanks for the input.

I hope people do read the comments before downloading or trying it out at least.

That way they can get to measure the trade-offs first before going through with the patching.

 » 3.90 M33

I honestly don't notice any read lag in the 3.90M33 I installed last night. If anything, XMB and ISO reading are significantly faster. That's what I notice anyway.

i hope that dark alex just releases a 3.90 M33-3 to fix this without the hassle. cause im not so good with all this hard stuff.

 » ok

Well, I guess that's one good thing about not upgrading from 3.71 ;p

I did upgrade my fat PSP to m33 3.80 because I wanted to test out the newest pandora, but I had no idea it causes slowdowns. I am pretty sure Alejandro will find out a way to fix the mp3 and pictures loss thing. Perhaps it'll be a fix of the time machine? (which will probably include pandora functionality, too. You heard it here from me first, if he does include that function :P).

Anyhow, sorry for being off topic, by why don't you guys go ahead and check out

I got a PSP from there, as well as a DS Lite, and about $300 in checks since Aug. 2007. I'm expecting a free XBOX 360 elite from them sometime this March! :D

 » WARNING - Prepare a Pandora!

I used the PSAR Dumper by DaX, pressed 'Cross', copied the 'fatmsmod.prx' file to root, ran this and walked away for 5-10 seconds to look at roommates computer for a funny picture, came back and PSP was bricked.

PSP: 3.90 M33-2 w/ 1.50 Add-on v2

   Re: Nezumi - 2008-02-13
 » P.S.: Not a newb

PS: I've had a PSP since 1.0, never missed a single update/micro-update. Only followed DaX's firmwares and never a problem before. More to come when my Pandora is 50% charged. NEVER bricked my PSP before, so guess there is a first time for everything.

   Re: Nezumi - 2008-02-13
 » READ NEWBS!

Ok, I learned just patching some of my flash0 worked just fine, so no need to charge the Pandora. Guess it's good to have weekly backups of my flash0. Anyhow, I tried again, this time with the RS PSAR Dumper, and I pressed 'Circle' instead of 'Cross', put it in the root and patched. Worked! Destroyed my MP3/Picture abilities, however I am still having trouble loading a certain ISO's and CSO's.

 » Well

I did it but its true no pictures or music, videos still work though and I never noticed a lag in ISO/CSO anyway...

Good work DAX but my music is my life ill wait till this is fixed.

this basically makes your PSP read your memory stick faster and better for no lag?

   by Binary - 2008-02-13
 » ...

old finally my memory stick loads fast/better on m33-2

   by NA1NSXR - 2008-02-13
» not faster, back to normal

no, it basically reverts memory stick performance back to the 3.71 era. Many of us have not moved on to 3.80 and 3.90 because they are slow. Apparently, using this patch will result in your PSP reading memory sticks in the same it does does under 3.71.

   by Nezumi - 2008-02-14
 » Read before patching:

Ok, due to having weekly backups of my flash0, just over 940MB now, should be a GB within a month, I was able to do some testing. Tests ran:

DaX's PSAR Dumper:
Cross: encrypted with sigcheck - Semi-brick :(
Circle: encrypted without sigcheck - Worked :)
Square: decrypted - Worked :)

RS's PSAR Dumper:
Cross: encrypted with sigcheck - Semi-brick :(
Circle: encrypted without sigcheck - Worked :)
Square: decrypted - Worked :)

Final Results:
Do NOT get a sigchecked version. Also, it does mess up your Pictures and Music, and for me it did not help load some ISO/CSO files, still getting the same problem.

 » lol

does this mean dax uses isos? and i never noticed any lag in isos/csos when i updated to 3.80 m33

so i guess i wont be needing this

don't use sigchecked files (a bug with psar dumper, means it does not dump them correctly - dump a a few time sigchecked and md5 them, and you'll see what i mean).

Also, download the add on from dark-alex.org, not here. Theres a new version that fixes the video, music and pics not showing - update ur news QJ!!

 » psp randomly resets

never noticed slow down, but i am having a problem i've not heard anybody else say. when i exit from a game onto the XMB i just get random resets until i remove the mem stick then it will fully boot into the XMB so i can continue to use it. anybody got any idea what this is. its a bit annoying but i guess i can live with it for now. maybe pandora can fix it. any sugestions would be greatly appreciated. oh and one more thing can a pandora battery be reverted back to normal or is it permanently a pandora once it's its changed me and a friend are having a debate i thought it could possibly be changed back i may be wrong if so call me a noob its my first mistake with psp but i can care less if im called a noob. be blessed people catch u around.

   Re: JaXeRiR - 2008-02-14

You can change Pandoras back to normal batteries.

And I'm sorry to hear about your PSP, try with another memory stick?

 » ?

Could it be that only people with a psp phat experience problems with their memory sticks? Because I have a psp slim with a 8gb memory stick on cf 3.90 and everything works perfect. Never experienced any lag.
Or am I an exception? Plz don't shoot me if it's a noobish question ;-)

 » no lag for ISO/CSO!

awesome. I noticed lags in GTA VCS. but I'm still afraid to upgrade higher than 3.52 M33-4 because my favorite plugins don't work anymore on that cfw.

   Re: doubleA - 2008-02-15
» As old as your mom

First of all we are up to 3.90m33-2 and about close to 4.00. Its called pspupdates and I dont know why you are a member. I really see no reason for why you shouldnt upgrade. Youre missing about everything new just for something old. Your problem also occurs with GTA LCS but it`s because it is constantly loading from the memory stick. I have the umd GTA VCS and it works perfect as it runs not faster but smoother than a memory stick. Other games such as racing games also do this but not as much because GTA is like a whole world with killers, gunfights, hookers, and strange people which it has to all upload at once slowing it. This might or might not work with it but your so far back and probably wont help you at all. Also upgrading will only benifit you because you get more features, more compatibility ex. IR shell(up to 3.80), and could still run 1.50 with a simple patch. Take my advice and upgrade then put this patch on. You could still run multimedia with the updated version so dont be afraid.

 » i cannot understand

i have 3.90 m33 and i experience no lag at all. even in 3.80 m33. but here is what ive noticed. when i play nba 08 on my 1GB memry stick, i lags. but when i play it on my 4GB, it doesn't. and the format is in iso therefore it is not compressed so there must be no lag. and the file size is like 800+ MB. hmmm...
