Sony's PlayStation Portable handheld - Image 1We're happy to announce that homebrew developer Dark AleX has released the latest custom firmware for the PlayStation Portable with CFW 3.90 M33. This new build fixes yet another bug connected to the March33 NO UMD.

Here's the specifics on the update taken from the Readme:

  • March33 NO UMD: fixed (yet another) bug related with exiting with home. (infinite semaphore wait)
The developer also noted the changes in the auto-updater function that was included in the previous version of CFW 3.80. He's noted some instability with the latest version of the updater. Should this happen, Dark AleX mentions that you should restart the installer and try again.

In any case, here's the list of changes to the updater:
  • The degeneration check and correction of IDS keys happens too in 3.71 now.
  • Added code to download 3.90 PBP from net via wifi. Note that his code is not yet 100% stable, it may crash when selecting AP. In that case, reinit the installer.
  • L+triangle has been restored as method to bypass battery. If you already have 390.PBP keep those buttons pressed until you see "Veryfing 390.PBP". If the 390.PBP is being downloaded bia wifi, press those buttons at the end of download until you see the previous sentence.
We strongly advise you to take a look at the Readme.txt file for more details on how to install the latest custom firmware on your PSP handheld. Please note that this requires your PSP to have CFW 3.52 M33-3 or higher already installed before updating.

Thanks to EXETER, Ari Bornstein, TheDragon, and all the other tipsters for the heads up!

*Update* This just in: Dark AleX updated his site with the release of the 1.50 kernel addon for the PlayStation Portable Fat. For those of you who aren't familiar with this program, the 1.50 kernel addon allows users to launch homebrew which have not been updated.

Please be advised that this new update only works for the newly released CFW 3.90 M33. In any case, here are the instructions on how to install the addon to your PSP running on CFW 3.90 M33:
  • Copy 150k_addon to /PSP/GAME
  • Get sony 1.50 update and copy it to the root with name “150.PBP”
  • Run the program and done.

**UPDATE 2**
Dark AleX has updated his site again, releasing version 2 of the 1.50 kernel addon for the Sony PlayStation Portable Fat. This update currently works with your PSPs with CFW 3.90 M33. Here's the changelog for Dark AleX' 1.50 kernel addon version 2:
  • TA086: when being in 4th brightness level and recovering from sleep mode, the display was black. Fixed.
  • Added support in the 1.50 kernel for memory sticks greater than 4 GB. (I finally got my 8GB card! :D) Before, only the first 4 GB portion was recognized by the 1.5 kernel. Now, the theroetical limit is 4GB*512 = 2 Terabytes. ("only" 1 TB, if sony were using signed variables).
To install this update, just copy to /PSP/GAME and then run. Enjoy!

Thanks to Ari Bornstein for the tip!

Every time I try to install this, I get "The game could not be started. (80020001) Can anybody help me?

I had to downgrade via Pandora's Battery. I don't know if that has anything to do with it. I'm at 1.50 right now.

I had this problem you need to Press the select button on the main menu to bring up the xmb menu(M33 VSH Menu). Scroll down to UMD ISO MODE and press the "right directional button" to change it from Normal to M33 DRIVER.

I knew that Sony's OFW v3.90 was out, but boy, I was surprised to see that DA updated his CFW 'AND' even the Add-on so quickly.

You deserve a great big thank you from alot of people, here's mine... THANK YOU!!

 » :)

Its definitely a type - it is the 3.90 eboot, not 3.80. Download from dark-alex.org and u will see an updated readme.

3.80 custom themes work fine on 3.90m33 :D

 » anyone?

after about 93% of the install it said "firmware update failed, contact customer service" I had to pandora it and now I"M on 3.71 again.....anyone else have this problem.....I put the 3.90 eboot on the memstick, instead of wifi downloading it. I'm gonna retry it and use the update feature this time cuz the installer I downloaded corrupted my firmware.

IR Shell work on this CFW?

 » :(

nope
   by PSPMAN90 - 2008-01-31
» OMG! Guys what's is so new about this CFW for the PSP Phat Users...

I mean everybody notice that the main Function of this new FW is the Skype Comunication Tool for the PSP-2000 aka PSP SLIM, so what's the big Idea on updating your PSP phat?! Yeah it comes:
1. More troubles running PSone games, and some new games too
2. Plugins that work perfect on CFW 3.71m33-4 doesn't work now!
3. Actually have everything that the CFW 3.71M33 have, and if u want Free Radio Just use the PSP RADIO that have more AM/FM Chanels than that Free Radio for PSP, c'mon the same sh@$#t!
4.when someone gave me a really good chanelog of what this New CFW have and do that the CFW 3.71M33-4 do, Ill update to CFW3.90M33!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now SONY will have to release his new OFW 4.00, remember that odd rumor that this OFW 4.00 is going to have absolute Security for NO-CFW PSP...
Yes I'm sure u remember!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Out this I hope Darkalian Man Dark Alex make the skype funcion for the Phat, port it in anyway, well more reliable way is make an homebrew or an plugin...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Well anyways DA congrats for this new and fast release of the CFW 3.90m33, is oviously that it was easier to make it, since is really look's like the 3.80 so it wasn't a big bother as you show us,
THANKS U DARKALIAN MAN! Thanks!

CHeers UP!

   Re: FreePlay - 2008-01-31
 » Dear idiot

FreeRadio is CUSTOMIZABLE. The readme TELLS YOU HOW TO CUSTOMIZE IT. Don't like the channel selection? ADD YOUR OWN.

   Re: J0539h - 2008-01-31
» You hit the nail on the head.

I agree, of course I appreciate the hard work of DA, but what did SONY really add, (that I can't get with homebrew) on my PHAT? Plus it breaks IR Shell which I love for the USBHOSTFS + NETHOSTFS, and that application is not going to be updated.

Sony updates for two reasons, 1) new features, which are rare, and 2) to stop homebrew.

So you need to make a decision, is it more important to run homebrew and all existing ISOs up to today OR run new UMBs and features only available in the newer SONY firmware? I prefer the former.
