PSp - Image 1Shiny Entertainment founder and Project Top Secret leader David Perry has expressed his disdain for the Sony PSP's UMD format, saying that the small disk is "waste of money, time, and investment".

Perry has his own ideas for the PSP, saying that if he were in charge of PSP development, he would take out all UMD mechanisms and make all existing UMD games available for download so that PSP gamers can still play their UMD titles. He also gave his own ideas on how gamers can give proof of purchase of the PSP UMDs that they own in order for them to get the downloadable versions of their games.

This is Perry's impression of a UMD-less PSP:

That will make it even more sexy-looking, because it will be thinner again when they get all that junk out. Then, hopefully, the platform will actually get enough interest so that people will make a game specifically for it.

If UMDs had feelings, they must feel a bit bad after being referred to as "junk".

Perry also went on to say that the UMD-less PSPs may be very beneficial both for Sony and retail stores, since costs of shipping, insurance and warehousing are eliminated. Retail stores would also get their valuable shelf space back.

Well, that certainly was some radical concept from Perry. But considering that his former studio created the offbeat Earthworm Jim franchise and that he is the director of the innovative Project Top Secret, it's really no surprise that he managed to come up with those ideas.

 » I Agree 100%

I totally Agree.. UMD is no Good. Games started from Memory Stick has much faster loading times and saves Battery Energie since there is no Motor. Games could also get bigger.

The Only + of UMD, you can swap games fast.. with the Memory Stick you have to move/copy games all the time if you play several titles at once.

   Re: J870g - 2007-09-17
 » Well...

Memory Sticks are expensive so buying games from stores would be expensive and not everyone has internet access so they wouldn't be able to download the games.

   Re: nrg_s_a - 2007-09-17
 » expensive?

Most games will fit on a 1GB stick, and the rest on a 2GB stick. It's not like they won't compress the games.

When you buy a 2GB stick for $50 you're paying for the packaging, shipping, middle man fee, etc. etc.
If a game was placed directly on a 2GB stick that Sony themselves bought in bulk it would only cost a couple of dollars, so the games would not be any more expensive than they are now.

   Re: CorporateThug - 2007-09-17
» THIS GUY IS AN IDIOT

if your downloading it then you probably gotta buy a bigger memory card which means ill cost more to buy a memory card then to buy ONE game. This guy is just a complete idiot, no respect for this guy at all

   Re: PSP_Trekster - 2007-09-17
 » your are clueless

the bigger the memory stick the more expensive the game, you are nuts if you think you will get a 1.8 gig memory stick and game for under 75.00. UMD works great and now with PSP slim UMD will have a better place in the market.

   Re: nrg_s_a - 2007-09-17
 » riight

PSP_Trekster
You're nuts if you think that bulk 2GB cards would cost Sony much more than bulk UMDs
Put it this way. Ebay sellers are making no less than a 100% profit, and look how cheap they can sell them for. And I doubt they buy more than 1000 at a time. Now imagine the cost if you can buy 100,000 at a time. Or even more.
I can't possible see the price of games being affected significantly.
   by Techni - 2007-09-17
 » He is retarded

The ability to play games is now junk?
Without UMD, PSP can't play games.
Publishers aren't going to release their games as downloadable titles since PSP was hacked completely, and they'd have to sacrifice to keep file sizes down.

I don't think he thought his answer through

   Re: Zocks2099 - 2007-09-17
 » @J870g

YOu could buy the Games on CD on the Store and then Copy it to the Memory Stick ;)

   Re: Advertising -

   Re: Techni - 2007-09-17
» That too would be stupid

CD isn't big enough for a lot of PSP games. I don't want to have to install my games before I play them, nor do I want to buy memory sticks for my 30+ PSP games, or need to get to a PC/PS3 before I can use them.

   Re: Iam(unregistered) - 2007-09-17
 » lol

Ok, then how about DVD. That'd be really cool if you could load games from memory sticks. Why didn't anyone think of that before? (*JK*)
   by lansingone - 2007-09-17
 » hell no

i would not want a psp without umd, and we seem to froget it would suck for us current psp owners, since we lack a second memorystick port, we would have to keep swaping sticks when we play games then switch to playing music. if we were to load the whole game on 1 memorystick then it would suck that most people could only have 1 game with them, at least with umd you can put 4 games into an altoids tin and have that in your pocket, and if your pocket are big enough you can carry 2 tins holding a total of 8 umds, plus one in your drive

   Re: Zocks2099 - 2007-09-17
 » hmmm

You are right, but if the PSP didnt have the UMD would be cheaper, the games hopefully too.. with the saves you can get a 8Gb Memory stick 6 games + Music + whatever.. just a thought.

   Re: Techni - 2007-09-17
 » the games hopefully too..

Nope. They'd be more expensive.
UMD was used for the same reasons CD and DVD were, large capacity, low publishing costs.
Switching to anything else would result in one of two outcomes
1) The same game is produced on a more expensive medium resulting in less profit for the developers, and less games from them in the future because of it.
2) The games would be scaled down, sacrifices made, no more CD quality music, no more voice acting, no more FMV, lower resolution textures, less levels, etc, all to fit in lower filesizes so they could fit in a smaller space so more users would be able to fit it on their memory stick with more games.

I for one am thankful Sony made an optical medium based portable. It's that reason that we have so many PSP games that never would be possible on any other handheld.

» Umd Standalone player. Sans PSP

I'd take the UMD Drive's and put them in standalone players for the movies. thats it. a 2.75 inch screen would do the trick and that way they could recoup costs with an ultra portable cheap ($60.00) player that they can plug in anywhere. Come on Sony, That is within your grasp. It would be a great way to save the dieing format. No PSP involved. oh and UMD's should cost $3.50. (they only cost around $.41 each to make)

all money in USD.

Hey, GW2, beware of soopergooman. He's a flamer. He tried to take down some websites and ebay auctions offering pandora's kit to those who don't have access to custom homebrew. Of course, it failed :D

Hey, soopergooman, weren't you banned for flaming?

What's wrong with offering for free something that *should* be free (pandora's battery)?

 » ...

yeah one problem...not everyone can afford an 8 gb memory stick and even then you can only fit what...4-10 games depending on size. That limits how many games ppl can have and slows the market down. this jackass doesn't know what he's talking about. and i didn't buy the psp because its sexy (even though it is). i bought it for the media capabilities and the ability to play games rivaling console versions. and many of those games use much of UMD's large capacity of 1.8GB which blows away the size of anything from any other portable system and is suitable for many last generation games. UMD is an excellent format. its cheap, large, and fits the psp's purpose perfectly.

 » Idiot

How can he expect this to work without further addressing
a higher storage medium.

He said, taking all the UMD junk out to make it sexier but
thats not the answer either.

VP of SCEE in the UK mentioned his interest in a PSP
hard drive.

David Perry is an idiot to think of just getting rid of the
UMD drive without thinking of a way to increase the
storage necessary to replace the UMD.

Only half an answer is no good David.

 » he's a moron

he thinks he's cool because he made earth worm jim like 12 years ago?

12 years ago! on a SNES catridge!

didn't he tried to make a 3D earth worm jim wich sucks big time?

what happened to the remake (yeah, a remake cuz he can't do anythjing new)

he thinks he knows but he dosen't know anything :)
   by Kiljoy - 2007-09-17
» Big deal who cares what he says

LAME

Why is it such a big deal that this guy says anything? Shiney hasnt came out with a good game in years. MDK(96) was awsome and the Earthworm jims on the snes and gensis were good to. Their matrix games sucked. Messiah was a big dissappointment. New game wise they are making golden compass(yawm) and a Earthworm Jim that sounds like will never be released(yawn if it does). Maybe theres games im missing in the future releases?
Last i heard atari had all their game rights and just sold off shiny to Foundation 9.

you can get alot of iso/cso on a stick. But with new games like gears of war coming out at the begining of the year that look like they are going to be using the psp and the umd to the fullest that could be changing soon.

by Mister Common Sense - 2007-09-17
» Sony would never do it

They came up with the UMD to reduce piracy. Loading ISOs would be even easier if the games came that way. Besides, they already made up their mind with the new slim PSP which is just coming out. They also don't want to admit any failure of their media formats.

This guy is an idiot.

   by Acteon - 2007-09-17
 » *Sigh*

Most games don't fill a UMD anyway, so space isn't an issue. Does anyone whinge about the tiny amount of data you can fit onto a DS cartridge? No.

Just sounds like a pillock jumping on the Sony bashing bandwagon. There may be many things to bash Sony about (marketing mainly) the UMD isn't one of them.

   by logicbomb.de - 2007-09-17
 » WFT?!

whatever, I wouldn't exactly call UMD a DEAD format seeing as how its proprietary to the PSP. it wont run on anything other than PSP so........

Maybe if there were a ton of standalone UMD players that no one bought gathering dust on shelves, well, then you got yourself a dead format.

seeing as how UMDs only run on PSPs, as long as PSP consoles are selling, don't look dead to me.

   by ActionHenk - 2007-09-17
 » hi

yeh lets get out the umd trade, lets play on a quarter inch thick psp,

it would really suck, emagine having a ps2 or ps3 controller which is very thin/slim, that would suck,

i,m happy the way the phat is, and the slim is just on the edge, more thinner and it would be a ***** to play

the battery life sucks lol!

but I like it!

this is like saying that ds cartridges are a dead format. games are still being published on umd disks as they are on ds cartridges. this guy is an idiot.

It should have a built in HDD. It would be like an mp3 player, but with games instead of music.

   by JaXeRiR - 2007-09-17
 » Well

anyways, some people here CANNOT buy games from teh intranets.

   Re: nrg_s_a - 2007-09-17
 » True

I'd say many people here can't considering the demograph.
It would cause more piracy out of necessity if all they offered was paid downloads.

 » IDIOT

He asked for it. How long did it take this numbnuts to think up this idea. What the hell was he thinking . how old is this guy 10? Here's a couple of reasons why that wouldn't work.

1. Piracy
2. Cost of storage
3. Piracy
4. Accessibility
5. Piracy
6. Frailty of Memory sticks
7. And finally Piracy

What a dumb ass.

   by MikeyMike01 - 2007-09-18

Well Sony could make some sort of new memory stick, not make any card readers, and transfer the file from it to the PSP. It would be like a DS with a HDD.

You know, normally, I'd agree with Dave Perry. But in this case, no. No no no no no hell no.
