Over at YouTube, we found this video tutorial on how to detect fake PSP Memory Sticks by looking at their internal components. First, there were three memory sticks laid out on the table, two of which were the alleged fakes, while one was supposedly the original. The fakes were very cheap versions of hi-speed Sony Memory Sticks bought online, while the original came straight from the PSP 2GB pack. |

Interesting guide for those who really need to be sure (eBay?) what they got is real or not.
As long as the memory stick works properly and is the capacity it claims to be I'm happy, fake or not.
Nice vid
I liked watching that video, the dudes voice really made me relaxed for some reason.
so gay, that's the reason why, poo-fuxor
Is there a fake 4 GB also? Coz i was planning to get one on ebay.
Probably.
But like everyone else said, as long as it works who cares.
loooool gaylord!!! (this guy was the second speaker of chewbaka but the first one was better screaming)
no difference between those chips??? dont matta 2 me
i just need a fast one
well i am using a fake 2gb high speed ... i got it from a shop ... from the price they selling ... i knew it was a fake due to the big diffrence in price if purchased from a sony dealer ... i've been using it since a year ago and ntg is wrong wit it ...
the best part of it is that my friend whom is using the normal 2gb original stick (bought from sony) ... is slower compared to mine ... xD ... but the downside of it is that ... hopefully mine dont spoil ... =D
kinda gay :D
This video is useless. He's comparing 2 fake Sonys with 1 real Sony, but the real Sony is not of the same type as the fake ones... so, apples to oranges. He should have used a REAL High Speed Sony to better compare the proper insides. Who knows what the REAL High Speed Sony looks like inside... One thing is for sure... the real Sony stick they are using in this video is not a "High Speed" one.
The video is useless unless you compare all the same cards! This means same size, same speed people!!!
I agree, totally gay....I had to stop watching after 1 minute it was so slow and pointless.
High speed this, high speed that...
Buy a Sandisk, they're just as fast as the expensive $ony ones. Make sure to buy it from a reputable dealer though. On eBay you are only getting what you pay for. There's a reason the bids are so low on these!
If these fakes are using really cheap flash memory, they may prematurely fail. Cheap off-brand memory = fewer write cycles.
Sandisk is the world's largest supplier of flash memory.
Wouldnt it have been easier when they opened them that they said, one says Sony, one says Samsung? lol
Kinda woulda saved me 5 mins just to have heard it, seen it and been like "ahhh right, now I get it" lol.
Of course they're gonna look different. one's a normal, and the others are pro's.
I couldn't finish the video cause I had to get up and dance....

Ive gotten a cheap memstick off of ebay, a 1giger, and didn't know it was fake until i had put it in my psp. Its stuck. It seems like the plastic is thicker. I've tried taking it out with tweezers, and its a no go. I can't really wedge inbetween it. My friend had a similar problem, and somehow was able to get it out with a knife. He said the card split in the middle then he pulled it out with his finger. Does anyone know a better way without breaking the card, or my psp?
Would unscrewing the psp to take out the card be better or worse of? I just got a new 2gig authentic memstick at bestbuy that I don't want to go to waste. Help.
I just want to make sure you do know that once the card is in you have to push it in to click it out.... it's the way the ProDuo's work. You push it in and it clicks in place and then to eject it you must push it in again and it'll unclick and stick out more so you can grab it with your fingertips.
The spring couldn't pop it out when you pushed down on it. The plastic is to thick and was jammed in the slot. The card did work, but I got something better now, and I did finally manage to get it out. I used a thin curved ice pick to make a small hole on the top part of the plastic, and forced it out. It came out without breaking. I didn't stab the chip itself so it should still work. I'll just use it now to store files with my usb reader like a thumbdrive.
Is there any diiference between the sony and the sandisk memory sticks like memory or read/write speed cause the sandisk ones seem to be a bit cheaper and come in pretty colours :)
I would have prefered it if he had thrown them on some scales, looked at the print under a magnifying glass, done anything than just take it apart really.
It was nice to see, enjoyed watching it, but what benefit? I suppose buying shares in samsung?
Guess what, it's Samsung. It was cheaper I guess for Sony to get Samsung to make the screens for the PSP, don't believe me? I'll take a picture of the inside of the PSP and post it.
I bought a 2GB & 4GB package on eBay (this was before I even knew fakes were around) and they were both fakes. Within 6 weeks, the 4GB failed and corrupted data left and right. I researched on the 'net and did an external examination and was able to determine the fact. What's worse, is now the guy who sold them to me is claiming that he never got them back and is asking for a tracking number which is not possible through USPS Air mail. I'll have to go through the paypal dispute crap.....
The 2GB one never failed and actually held more data than the Sony brand, but who knows how long it would still function.......
I heard rumors that Sony was suing manufacturers over copyright law. I hope those MFs get what's coming to them........
If you're strapped for cash and want a decent deal, get the MAX 4GB PSP hard drive (adds some bulk and wieght to the PSP, but beggers can't be choosers) -- it even comes with a free larger (and thus, longer lasting - my psp claims it for 7hrs of use) battery - cost $108. OR get the "Double Expand Memory Converter for PSP" which will let you use non Memory Stick Pro Duo memory sticks with your PSP - you can even use two sticks at the same time - cost $19 (If I knew this option was avaliable, I probably wouldn't have gotten the hard drive, nor the fake memory sticks - since I have plenty of SD cards for my other devices)..... last word: DON'T BUY FAKES (unless you like your hardware going bad)
