Zack fair - Image 1There's no doubt that Square Enix's Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII is one of the company's best handheld releases. The publisher has made quite an impact with it on Sony's PlayStation Portable, and this leads some to wonder why the game wasn't released on the Nintendo DS which has a larger user base.

To answer that question, Pocket Gamer contacted two of the game's main men: producer Hideki Imaizumi and executive producer Yoshinori Kitase. The two bosses gladly explained the choice behind the exclusivity.

The two explained that the install base on each platform wasn't the top consideration for choosing the handheld to release the game in. Knowing where the target market is was the more important question at hand.

"The demographic was higher teens to young adults as opposed to small children," said Kitase. "The PSP seemed closer to that demographic than DS in general. So we feel we really made the right choice."

The move was likely to have been motivated by considerations on which age group the story's theme would appeal to. Square must also have been going after fans of the original Final Fantasy VII who have grown up and are likely to own a PSP than a DS.

 » Good.

I'm VERY glad they chose the PSP.

ALOT of games on the DS(I got a DS as well) are just being tossed into the DS simply because there are sooooo many people who got a DS. You can just make an game with flash-quality, and millions will buy it.

Brain Age is the perfect example, it's so oversimplified... it's a bit too easy made. Makes you think "I could make this" when you play it.
I'm not bashing the DS, just saying it's a bit sad how they only think about the money and release a quick game for the DS. Since it requires alot less work with so simplified graphics and it got alot bigger userbase.

Making PSP games is more or less just as much work as making a PS2 game. While DS = SNES/N64.

Another game that really REALLY should be on the PSP is the handheld Ninja Gaiden, cant belive they went so sellout to release it on the DS. On the PSP, it could play just like a Ninja Gaiden game, unlike on the DS.

God of War: Chain of Olympis is a good example of just how good PSP games can be. Ninja Gaiden should've been simelar. :S

» I agree! I own a PSP and DS also.

If for example, ninja gaiden WAS on the PSP, it would have the speed and difficulty of its predecessors.

DS is for lazy devs and/or easy money.

same opinion here.

Assassins Creed is another example. It had so much potential for the PSP, but, hey, why not bring out a *****ty Jump+Run game for the DS? Let's call it Assassins Creed and everybody will buy it.

 » OMG!

I have a PSP and a DS too! LOL!

well, I have only played the ninja gaiden demo for DS, I thought it would be as hard and fast as the xbox version, but, like ultimaarmorx and oraichu I noticed it was very easy and lazy (a PSP version would kick ass) it's like a ninja command and conquer with only one guy

Are you loling because it's true? The PSP is geared for young adults -> Adults. Very unlike the DS in nearly every respect.. I, too, think they made the right choice!

I dunno.. regardless of demographic, it seems like a clear choice to me.

Not to mention, if it was on the DS, the graphics would look like crap. They would have to have made it 2D. Just wouldn't work with the fighting system setup.

The DS game cards have a 256MB capacity limit as opposed to UMD 900 MB (single layer), 1.8 GB (dual layer)

   Re: Foolmonkey - 2008-04-24
 » BUT

if Nintendo was smart they could make HUGE awesome games. they could cram an absurd amount of memory into those cards, but they choose not to for no reason whatsoever.

   Re: Mr Toasty - 2008-04-24
 » Remember

Card based media is a whole lot more expensive than Discs. Blank N64 cartridges cost a couple bucks each while the PS1 discs were only a couple cents.

If the DS cartridges were any bigger, they'd be way too expensive to produce.

The downside to optical formats is how long data transfer takes.

They forgot to mention that the DS is an underpowered piece of crap that wont run Crisis Core without it looking like *****.

Yup DS is a pretty garbage system. Its only real potential is to make emulating harder. Nintendo knows all they're games were best played on PC. They just want some retarded ***** like two screens to make it harder to emulate.

I think GBA still pwns DS too. All they should have done was put those frigging X and Y buttons on the GBA, give it a snes pixel ratio and and the carts n 3d. two screens is retarded. why waste that material making reaally low res game. I love 2d games too but mostly ds are ugly 3d and not many ppl like that.

DS sales just go to show how many fans are loyal to their fave series. Cuz DS games arent even as good as most gba titles. I have all consoles and i play psp and ps2 the most. Nowhere else can you find as many good titles.

Still glad for Megaman ZX1 and Final Fantasy 3& 4 though.
(even though both would have rocked on psp)

Thanks for readin if you did...
