The 70s game, Pong - Image 1Homebrew coder Zion has just made an announcement regarding the ongoing Chip-8 emulator project, DreamChip. This PlayStation Portable-based homebrew application has just been updated to version 3.0, and is now available for your downloading pleasure.

Chip-8, for those asking, is a programming language originally created by Joseph Weisbecker for the COSMAC VIP and Telmac 1800 8-bit microcomputers back in the 70s. This particular PSP version was coded from the PC emulator originally coded by TJA of the emutalk forums. Chip-8 carries ported classic games such as Pong, Space Invaders, Tetris, and Pac-Man. Getting back on topic, here are the changes from after version 2.0:

  • The emulator now runs in full screen mode.
  • Flickering reduced (only seems to affect Pong).
  • Input working flawless (no more stickyness).
  • Slight Speedup.
  • More compatibility (games like Space Invaders now work)
Now, in case you guys were wondering what else is under works for version 4.0, Zion listed these:
  • More compatibility (a few bugs are hampering a few games)
  • Solve Flickering issue (flickering issue will be solved by the next release)
  • File Browser (its been low on priority, but i will definitely include in next release)
  • Speed (more speed )
Be sure to view the README to see how to upload this application to your PSP. DreamChip's source code to the bundle, which is hoped to help other aspiring coders learn the basics of PSP emulating. Lastly, be warned that Zion does not permit unofficial builds of this application. With that said, we thank Zion for this release, and hope you guys enjoy your download.

like someone said, the psp is way better than this crap. Why do we need some 8-bit emulator for the psp. just to play old games like pong and space invaders, which mind you, can already be played on the psp without this emulator.
But kudos to Zion for trying to code a project. Next time pick somethin a little more worthwhile.;)

Well first of all there arent much coders out there who can make emulators in the first place

take daedalus why arent there so many versions of those going round the web, its because its a very hard to code emulator

No offense to zion but i dont think he start coding something that advanced as a n64 emu yet

But Zion likes coding for a hobby and obviously he wants to get better, so to make his coding time worthwhile he decided to work on an emulator and it would still be something not released till yet, so in the end he ends up and codes an emulator and at the same time improves his knowledge on how to code more higher, advanced emulator

u get the idea?

» emu programmers give people a reason to buy a PSP

I bought my PSP for the umd games such as Lumines and Ridge Racer, but I find myself playing NesterJ, DGen, MVSpsp, Stella, ColM, SMS, UAE and others because they have games that will always be classics and are still fun today even with dated graphics.

You people are lucky for these dev guys... don't bash them!

You should be thanking them, not saying stupid stuff... keep your rude comments to yourself. I say the more emulators the better my PSP gets... keep them coming and great job to all dev guys!
