With iPhone joining the fray and Nintendo's DS consistently raking in the bucks, the PSP brand manager is still optimistic that the PSP still has got more experience under its belt than its competitors that it will still stay ahead despite the features offered by others. Let's take it point by point. 1) "It simply has the best gaming experiences around." - Keep in mind, it's got high-profile titles like God of War: Chains of Olympus and Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII in its backyard. Oh, and yes, colors do also add to that gaming experience, and with assorted choices, they definitely got that in the bag. 2) "It's been a perfect confluence of events resulting in our performance." - It's not just a portable gaming machine, it's got multimedia functionality. It's got Remote play functionality, Skype, video content via the PlayStation Store, and more. Good points, there, really. But what of the new iPhone App Store? Are they feeling the pressure with that? No, not really. See, it should be Nintendo who's worried about that. "We think the iPhone is more of a threat to the DS than anything else." Casual content is a key demographic for the DS, but iPhone's got its eyes on it as well. To put it simply, they're not worried at all about iPhone coming into the picture. However, although they do say that they've got good prospects on the PSP for the coming year, 2009, and despite the fact that up and coming games like Patapon 2, LocoRoco2 and Resistance: Retribution are sure to generate renewed interest with their handheld, third-party publishers for the PSP were apparently not as felt in this year's E3. DS, on the other hand, has stocked up healthy on those, and the iPhone is showing tremendous adaptation rate. So, while it's good that they're feeling confident about PSP still getting through okay despite the competition, overconfidence just may be a tad problematic, don't you think? Anyhow, we've always believed competition makes the world a healthier place, so just bring it on, we say! Related Articles:

I'm sorry, I speak English. I don't know what you mean by a "snug screen". Is it cosy and wrapped up for bed?

Koller is an absolute joke. The DS has to be worried about the iPod Touch/iPhone? No. Just... No. The iPhone is the best phone this tech guy has ever seen but it's primary function isn't gaming.
Infact looking at the current market the devices that ARE dedicated to gaming only seem to perform best.
It's even more of a joke with comments such as "It simply has the best gaming experiences around.". Lol, yea. That's why it has such a poor attach ratio, that's why it has how many games above 90% on Metacritic? It's embarrassing when it's "gaming experience" is simply mimicking older consoles with the same control schemes, same everything; just it's portable. Nah.
In closing not even the PSP has to be worried about the iPod Touch or iPhone. One is primarily an MP3 player and one is primarily a phone. Now if only Sony would make the PSP and PS3 primarily gaming platforms.

In case you haven't noticed, the Nintendo DS has 457 games listed in Metacritic. 4 of them above/or 90 points.
Now let's look at the PSP. Metacritic has listed 383 PSP games. 1 of them over 90 points. I do agree it's pretty bad, but what about the GameCube?
Metacritic has listed 502 games for the GameCube, and it has got 26 games over 90 points.
So, by that comparison we could say that GameCube has much better games than the PSP and DS.
And in my opinion it DOES have much better games..

What matters is if you like the games or not, not that every critic is worshipping the game. The thing that makes the psp awesome isn't its games but the fact that you can hack into it and do a lot more things with it. But that is only because its the only one out their that can do what it does. I seem to recall another phone company thinking it could make a Cell Phone console and look what happened to that.

Jaxe doesn't seem too smart... Doesn't seem to grasp the distance since release from DS/PSP to Gamecube. Gamecube was out in 2001. DS and PSP were out in 2004. Hmm, or were they released at the same time in whatever country he/she is from?
And the Gamecube did have many highly rated games. They just didn't sell many. Kinda the opposite of the PSP which is selling bad and still has few highly rated games.
Opinions have nothing to do with it - when Koller, representing his company, says "the best experience" then it's not opinion. It's a company trying to make a factual statement which is clearly wrong.

Yes, I know that PSP and DS were released a few years later than the GameCube. I was comparing them by the number of games Metacritic has listed for them and by the number of games over 90 points.
Or do you mean that critics gave better scores to games back in '01? Bah.
Think about it.
The DS has already 457 games listed, the PSP has 383, but the GameCube got 502 games during it's (short) lifetime.
Well, you have to agree that the PSP and DS have a lot to catch, if they plan to get 26 90+ games. And they're pretty close to the number of GameCube games listed.
All I am saying here, is that you cannot compare consoles/games by their Metacritic scores. I was not trying to make a valid point that GAMECUBE IS BETTER THAN PSP AND DS MWAHAHAHA. I was just trying to prove that nobody gives a dog crap about Metacritic scores when comparing different platforms.

Well yes, at this stage the Gamecube is still better than a PSP. If I hadn't played through Metroid Prime 1 and 2, Melee, Windwaker, Twilight Princess, Eternal Darkness, F-Zero GX, Resident Evil 4, Viewtiful Joe, Twin Snakes and had the choice of them or a PSP... Well that's a simple choice to make.
But you're still finding it hard to comprehend that yes - we can make comparisons. Part of being human (at least the mind) is the ability to draw abstract comparisons from 2 seemingly different sources. Therefore you can say "the best gaming experience" and compare from 2 separate time periods, I don't know why you'd want to do it since it would be much better to compare against something modern (ie. the DS, Xbox 360 etc). But suit yourself.
So in the end you can compare. In the end you buy a system and the good games for it (at least normal people do) and right now I could buy a PSP and a few good games, or a DS and a lot. And to use your odd mentality I could buy a cheap Gamecube and a whole load of highly rated games.
Oh and the reason for the lowly rated DS games - just before the DS's launch Nintendo lowered the standards required to publish a game for the system in a bid to entice developers to their "radical" new system. God knows why the PSP has so many games yet so few good rated ones, maybe they just dropped their quality standards altogether.

» Did anyone notice that
Jaxe decided to compare hand held systems to home systems. In my opinion the game cube falls way short of the psp in every aspect, way short.
And if you think that the psp has no good games, get an emulator. Just try to do that on your oh so powerful Gamecube...

Wow! Another retarded poster! You think the Gamecube has no emulators, wtf? http://www.zophar.net/consoles/gamecube.html Even the Wii has a whole load of emulators.
And BTW if we're going off emulation counting towards how good a system is (LOL!) then I suppose the Wii is the best console of all time... Since well, you can go and buy Ocarina of Time, Mario 64, Mario World, Link to the Past and all these other 99% rated games.
Going off your logic the Wii is the best console going. Thanks.
And how can the Cube fall short of the PSP when the Cube has more quantity, more varied and higher scoring games? Oh, that's right, it goes against your fanboy opinions.

new 3G iPhone is 600 + 2 yrs contract? May be there is a lower price?
DS is 130 locally. PSP is 160 or so. It is like buy 3 DS at the same time at least
2 yrs contract means buying a new game each month for the next 2 year. Sure some of you will say if you already have a phone you have to pay for that anyway. Ok that's fair. But still not a lot of smaller kids has a phone contract (at least NOT my kids... well not that I know of...)
Battery Life -- iPhone has a avg 10hr inactive time it seems (may be I am wrong). So how many hr is that converted to actively playng games? I know my DS and PSP can last for 2 weeks+ if not played and DS gave me continuous 4+ hours of playing not even fully charged since I was stuck in an airport and wasn't able to charge my DS for at least 8 hours. Battery cost for PSP and DS is $30. How much is the battery replacement cost of iPhone?
Games on DS or PSP can resell. Not sure about iPhone games.
You can play DS and PSP and talk on phone at the same time... try that with iPhone.
I am not even going into PSP mod and R4 at this moment. I am just sure that even if I switch to iPhone I probably will not use it as a game handheld.

The iphone is $199 for 8GB and $299 for the 16GB where the hell did you get $600? Look at the website.

» I did say "may there is a lower price?" ;)
I don't really care about it so I didn't follow up with the actual pricing. I never say I am THE expert on pricing so what I was saying was based on my assumption.
Ok, so if it is 299 for 16G then it is comparable to DS or PSP price. My apology for I was wrong

I'd have more confidence in Koller if he could back himself up with some action. I'm a big PSP fan, but lack of marketing and 3rd party support will kill the system stone dead if Sony don't get off their collective asses in gear and do something fast.
Resistance is a good start. Like that move.
Now translate some of the better J-PSP games (Bleach, Gundam SEED etc), encourage Korean developes to release casual games like DJ Max Portable in the West and get retailers to stuff their shelves, while backing it up with a concentrated and kick ass TV marketing campaign (like the celebrity heavy DS commercials) and we might just be on to something.
Lastly, and it pains me to say it, make a firmware that lasts more than 2 minutes against hackers. Both my PSP's use custom firmware, but I'm one of the minority that buys all my games (29 so far). The only way to restore confidence in 3rd party developers is to kill off piracy. The system is dead if Sony can't deliver on that issue.
Oh, and I have an iPhone 3G - I don't see it as a threat to the PSP given that the best games are Monkey Ball and Pac Man...
