PennyArcade was none too happy with the buggy, “lackluster” version of EA’s Madden ‘06 for the PSP.  Here is what they had to say:

Electronic Arts appears to have dropped the ball on the newest iteration of Madden for the PSP, what is called Madden '06, from time to time they create some kind of workaround that doesn't work around, and there is a part of me that just thinks this is what you get for playing sports games.

Now that there is a lackluster website to channel this angst, ever a sign of online momentum, I'm told that EA has actually invested in a piece of equipment to help them field calls from enraged consumers. That's what I'm told, at any rate.

You need to know something about how software authorization works. Console manufacturers each have departments that act as gatekeepers to their unsullied platform. The "Official Nintendo Seal" you have seen since the eighties is what you get when your product has bested these people in single combat or whatever arcane ritual is required. But I will tell you that if the publisher is big enough, and I don't think I need to be any more specific about the one I'm referring to, which is Electronic Arts, the rules don't always apply, and the decisions are made at a level higher than those people.

It seems strange to us, the men and women who queue at the counter for our preorders, but there are political considerations that can factor into whether or not we receive a functional piece of software. Do you want to be the company that stops the works when a behemoth like EA is trying to launch on four platforms, just to give an example? Don't you want powerful, and more importantly annual franchises like Madden on your system? Because they have those. Maybe online doesn't always work exactly right. Maybe there is a condition where it shuts off the system. If it doesn't happen beyond a certain threshold of frequency, to retail!

Do you taste that, console enthusiasts? It is that vile flavor PC stalwarts have grown so inured of that we download a patch the day we purchase a game and think "This is the way of the world.

Wow, take some english classes people! If you can't understand what the article is saying, then kill yourself now because life is just going to be too hard for you to deal with!

That aside, Madden `06 is the worst PSP game ever. It has the worst production values and WAY too many bugs. A game that just shuts off your PSP randomly is a game that never should have been released to the public. I hate EA and after giving them one last chance with Madden, I am done with this stupid company.

anonymous 10:15 its nto because of th style of writing its because the writing is crap.. this story is a waste of time for people to rad and should not be on a news site. how is this news? its one person who cant even put together a coherent sentence opinion. This is for news not for reviews.

   by Anonymous (Unregistered) - 2005-10-07

this article could be expanded into the reason ppl stop paying for crap titles right away and pirate 1st.
what about renting and not pirating? i hear you bleeding hearts sniveling. i'll tell you why. if you rent the game, the dev/publisher/gamefly/whoever still gets your hard earned money.
i am of the opinion these greedy and lazy jagoff game companies dont deserve dime one from us loyal gamers IF AND ONLY IF they put out crappy and buggy titles.
you crappy pirates out there dont forget to buy @ least 1 new release game a month that you like RETAIL not used.

How old are you people posting here?
What's so hard to understand? I'm just dumbfounded at all the posts here saying how they found the article poorly written.
Just because it slams a PSP game and mentions Nintendo's old "Seal of Approval" system, you've written it off as a poorly written rant.
EA deserves to get beaten up over the head (over and again) with this release of a bug-ridden game. There are many posts in the IGN board in the PSP section regarding this random lock-up problem and the absolutely stupid EA "workaround" that simply doesn't work.

I am a decently educated person, and I too thought that his article was written in poor taste and with an unclear subject to adhere to! I play madden 06 for psp and I too think it is a great game. There are some loading times, but I am having fun going through the season as the raiders! I would give this game an 8.5 out of 10 on my scale!

jesus, there are some seriously stupid people on this site. you can't understand what he's saying?

reading comprehension for the win you retards. tycho has a fairly complicated way of writing (hp lovecraft is his favorite author after all), but come on. it's english, learn to read before you learn to flame morons.

Penny Arcade == balding, obese nerds. Nobody cares.

i hate ea

   by Anonymous (Unregistered) - 2005-10-07

i dont get what he is trying to say. Something to do with nintendo procedures on the psp?

   by Anonymous (Unregistered) - 2005-10-07

I use to work at the EA QA Dept. But i left before madden 06 shipped. In a way im not suprised the game shipped with a noticeable amount of bugs or is stirring complaints or whatever ( i geuss the management needs to rethink their methods) but at least im not responsible for peoples discontent :D

My head hurts after reading that. This is beating around the bush at it's worst. Just say what's bothering you instead of dribbling on and on!!

Hey, Ultima 1 works great on my Apple IIe :)

Anyway, I completely agree that software development by game manufacturers has had some serious issues since the Internet boom... software quality assurance in games and other yearly software products has tended to go the wayside in favor of the "just ship it, maybe fix it later" approach. Such a stigma when developing console games is such a disservice to the consumer, as they can't just patch games they purchase. Of course, the PSP could get around this if you could automatically check for patches to a game and download them - but then you'd have to keep those patches on the Memory Stick somewhere (the flash ram is so small that you couldn't possibly keep all your game patches in there)... C'mon software developers - unite against the QA-haters!

You guys are idiots. That "dribbling on and on" is Tycho's style and is extremely funny. Learn to love it:

Everyone already knows the problems with Maddden 06 on the PSP. So why would he need to retell a overtold story? Simply, he doesn't. It's very clear what he's trying to say; maybe you should take some english classes.

It talks about the old school Nintendo seal of approval. You could only get this if you had servere testing by Nintendo with your game. Sony did this with the original Playstation. But now these days its all about $$$; and EA could probably care less. I'm more concerned about the developement house's internal QA department than EAs. These bugs are quite obvious and easily reproducable.

I have this to say Madden 06 on the PSP sucked ass. It felt like i was playing the first Madden on the PSX that used Polygons (i forget wich year it was)

   by Anonymous (Unregistered) - 2005-10-07

Wow, I usually don't post anything but the article (for lack of a better term) is incoherent and crudely written. Shame on whoever wrote this ranting piece of pseudo-news.

   by Kumakikai (Unregistered) - 2005-10-07

Eh, I didn't know until reading this. I'm behind the times. Not that I was going to sink cash into Madden anyway, but nice to know. Maybe I'll pick it up for the entertainment value of tiny players.

   by Anonymous (Unregistered) - 2005-10-07

id be suprised if these geeks ever played a real game of football, they have no idea what they are talking about. This is the best Football game there has ever been.

   by NHAnimator (Unregistered) - 2005-10-07

After reading the article, I was lost as well. PSPUpdates REALLY needs to think, just for a moment, about what to do on slow news days. It's one thing to read something written in broken English, which is fine. I don't speak a second language, so I don't complain about those who do so weakly. But this story just makes no sense.

   by Anonymous (Unregistered) - 2005-10-07

lol
I loaded it up
went to quick play
saw the grainy and disgusting 'grass' on the field... shut it off.
what a waste of bandwidth...
INITIAL D FOR PSP!!! WINTER 2005!!! I CAN'T WAIT!!!

   by Anonymous (Unregistered) - 2005-10-07

Because the average PSP poster has the IQ of a box of rocks and didn't understand the rant here's the explanation:

Madden on PSP is broken, badly badly broken. In addition to terrible load times and inordinate amounts of slow down the game flatout shuts down at seemingly random intervals. For the largest video game software developer in North America this is simply unacceptable in terms of quality.

In the old days of gaming it would be unacceptable, Madden 06 for PSP wouldn't have received the Nintendo seal of quality. The problem? EA is too large and too important of a developer to have on your console for you to tell them not to put out their buggy half assed version of Madden.

The article concludes by saying that console games are slowly moving towards one of the things that killed PC gaming: unfinished products being shipped with the need for patches and bugfixes.

See, that wasn't so hard to comprehend was it? Maybe if you kids actually paid attention in school you'd learn to understand more than the most basic and concrete style of prose.

I have Madden for the PSP and it's great and it's also got pretty good reviews just about everywhere else where I've read about it. There are some bugs, but nothing that took away from the gameplay in my experance so far (like the kickoff meter disappearing, however just click start twice to pause and unpause the game and it works again - this is the only bug I've found).

Also Madden is by far the most impressive game I've played so far on the PSP.

   by Anonymous (Unregistered) - 2005-10-07

i have shut off game commentary and played through one season and a half of franchise mode without any failures. There has to be x factors (certain mem sticks, options toggled) that are causing people to crash. That's no defense though. EA needs to be beaten up over this.

well I for one hope that PSPupdates keeps running stuff from PennyArcade - "this ranting piece of pseudo-news" was actually one of the better examples of tech analysis. What big words? "unsullied", "inured", "threshold of opinion", ? IMO they are all correctly used in context and add some flavour to an otherwise bland report...

NFL Madden 06 (EA), is the worst PSP Game ever, next to Marvel Nemesis (EA).

EA made gold when they produced a very nice launch title, NFSU, and even made it back when they made Burnout Legends (EA), but yeah, this Madden **** is pathetic - No online play, I haven't tried Ad-Hoc yet, and the slowest loading times ever, next to Midnight Club (Rockstar).
