Epsilon BIOS

After a lot of hype, some skepticism, and a lot of fanfare, the Epsilon BIOS is finally released. Billed as one of the true Custom Firmwares, and one of the main reasons to buy the Undiluted Platinum modchip, it has quite a feature set. Among other things, it supports homebrew right on 2.71. We didn't have a modchipped PSP at the QJ labs to test it out, but given some of the early reviews coming out, it does seem to do its work quite well.

Here are some of its features:
  1. Runs alongside 2.71 firmware, so you get all the features of 2.71 such as RSS feeds, web browser etc combined with the advantages of homebrew software and ISO loading.
  2. Allows execution of homebrew software in kernel mode, removing all limits previously in place while running homebrew on firmware versions above 1.50.
  3. Built-in recovery menu which can be used to to update your Epsilon BIOS installation or restore your PSP flash contents if it becomes "bricked".
  4. Ultra reliable, near transparent UMD emulation allowing users to run their backups from a Memory Stick with ease, including games which require 2.0+ firmware without rebuilding the backup or relying on nasty hacks.

An excerpt from the User Manual:

"Epsilon BIOS can be compared to a "bootloader". It is stored on the U.P. flash memory and executed when your PSP is powered on. Once Epsilon BIOS is running it loads and "piggybacks" the real firmware from the PSP flash. Currently only 2.71 firmware is supported, you must upgrade your PSP onboard firmware to 2.71 in order to use Epsilon BIOS. If you attempt to boot Epsilon BIOS with an unsupported firmware version you will be taken to the recovery menu where you can upgrade the PSP firmware. The great thing about Epsilon BIOS is that since the "bootloader" always runs before the real firmware we can apply whatever patches are necessary to disable whatever protection Sony tries to add in the future, making a U.P. modified PSP using Epsilon BIOS very future proof."

While the feature set definitely sounds impressive, I'll be the first to stick my neck out and say that it still doesn't have enough to 'force' everyone to buy a modchip, unless they're stuck on 2.7+ firmware.

If this was a few months ago, I would have easily pestered myself to buy one of them chips, but looking at the really great programming coming out in the last few weeks, I'm not so sure now. Apart from the only advantage of loading kernel mode homebrew in 2.71, it doesn't offer any feature which the homebrew community haven't got already.

But then again, let this not be a bad review. I am personally looking forward to the stuff which they can offer in the future. I do understand that given the minimal time frame they had to make this, they have really done a great job of packaging it all together. I'm sure that given a substantial amount of time, these guys can accomplish a lot of really great things, for the simple reason that they can work with a lot of hardware which will aid them.

Unfortunately, we can't give it out since it does contain a large portion of the official Sony firmware. If you have a modchip and haven't yet received your copy of Epsilon BIOS, please contact your modchip dealer.

Since when is 1 day old? sheesh.....

It would be great if 1.5 users can use this firmware without the modchip ;)

 » Impressive...

Most impressive. But yeah, since most DevHook users are too cheap to buy a single game I'm sure they won't be shelling out for a modchip unless it does something seriously amazing or they end up left with no choice for whatever reason.

 » Mod chip obsolete already

Because of the brillian work of dark_alex and others, the mod chip is only good for unbricking. Lately with the 2.5+2.6 kernal access, we are getting all the perks from the chip with only a few mouse clicks instead of soldering that could do permenant damage to your PSP.
hmm, perhaps someone could disect the epsilon BIOS and non-modded PSP users can use it (or parts of it.) we'll have to see what happens in the future.
#6 i bought me and my katamari, i plan on buying all the games i can instead of downloading the ISOs.

 » wtf

this is old and epsilon suck. u can do all this in devhook just u gotta poweroff more, no biggie, thats better than dishing out $100 - $200 for a modchip.

i also wonder why you need to upgrade to 2.7 for it. i mean there really is no reason you should have to upgrade. cuz the bootloader is run off the modchip and shouldnt need to read the flash firmware before loading up the fgirmware on the modchip.

I also checked out that EZIP iso compressing they have, 1) you cant decompress them yet. 2) the compression is junk and isnt even as good as cso.

DEVHOOK IS BETTER

 » this is cool but

This is cool but as #8 said devhook runs more games, and is free. Plus you don't have to open up your psp and use a microscope to install it. A friend of mine who had a 2.71 psp has one in his psp and out of all the ISOs I gave him only about half work. So I guess it is ok if you have no other choice.

QJ probably doesn't want to host it due to the fact it does minorly with "OMG SUPER EVIL" ISO loading.

 » Envy, jealousy, or both.

I'm seeing tonnes of people constantly whimpering "b-b-b-but Devhook!".
Guys, this is awesome! You're only putting it down and saying it sucks because you can't afford a modchip. Get over yourselves and try to appreciate that something new and impressive has come. Just because you can't be a part of it doesn't mean you should put it down. Go back to your pirated videogames, kids.

Does this mod chip support user with mobo TA-082
If not then I doubt anyone will buy it
Soon 2.71 will be hacked anyway.

I would rather have my 1.5 PSP with DevHook installed tbh.

I can afford one, and I was going to get one but after seeing it in action on friends psp I was unimpressed. Why spend $90 plus the time and effort to install it just to have something with less functionally of devhook. For me it isn't a issue of price, if this was $50 and devhook was $50 I would get devhook since it is clearly superior. If you upgraded to 2.71 and this is your only choice then fine.

I can understand people liking Devhook. It is a wonderful tool that has delivered paradise to 1.50 users. The reason I like the Epsilon is because of its simplicity, and it is futureproof (Devhook is always 1 step behind $ony), and the recovery mode makes a PSP unbrickable, which is good for people who like to experiment with x-flash and other dangerous tools.

To each his/her own I suppose. Everyone should just stick to which ever way best meets their needs.

The only thing that bothers me here is that a lot of the people posting that it sucks and its useless are the same people that were screaming FAKE just a few days ago. And now that they've been proved wrong (and immature), they're screaming bloody murder and hiding behind devhook and declaring the EP bios as useless, saying "It Sucks" while clearly not knowing much about its capabilities.

@21: you only need 2.7/1 to boot into the firmware itself. recovery menu features are available regardless of firmware version, and are loaded straight off the chip, i suspect.

Even though I agree with you to some extent, can you please name any MAJOR differences between Devhook and the chip? I mean Dark_Alex's custom firmware can unbrick PSP's as well. Im sure the Mod chip is great, but I rather have Devhook for free, even though it is a step behind the Undiluted Chip.
