 French site PSP Gen has got some curious and interesting tidbit regarding certain games that can actually recognize a Custom Firmwared PSP, which in turn blocks you from being able to play it. On such game is Evangelion: Jo, currently available only to the Japanese market.Said the post (duly translated): Sony and the software house to pass counterattack. E 'of the news yesterday that the game Evangelion: Jo, for now this only on the Japanese market, is able to recognize the presence of the PSP Custom Firmware that is started. This is done by making a check on the RAM of the console, and whether this is positive, the game will not start. The solution to the problem might be but just around the corner. Like the CF-A 5.02GEN has a feature that allows you to emulate an official firmware, soon also the last 5.50GEN CF will benefit from this option. We will keep you updated when new. An anti-CFW check, you say? If this be true, then Sony is apparently upping the ante on their drive against homebrew. But at the same time, they'll just be driving more people towards piracy. Sound tough, but not exactly the win-win situation we'd rather have. Related Articles:

Two solutions I can see straight away. 1. CFW caters for the checks. 2. we get patches for ISO's like every other cracked system previously.
If #2 happens then people will be even more inclined to the dark side than using their own backups.

If you have a CFW but NOT for ISOs, this could potentially (if there isn't a good fix and it becomes the norm) stop you from playing your UMDs as if you were running the OFW. Not enough detail was given but if it the UMD disc detects your FW and prevents you from playing, but a modified ISO of the same game runs fine, you are only hurting legit customers.

im pretty sure that sony wouldn't dare try to dish out a new OFW just to stop people playing the UMDs on CFW, considering that some psp owners, especially the ones who are faithful, would go out and buy the games anyway regardless that they can play it for free, which i advice that everyone should do if they want sony to come out with something better then the psp go.

Developers are sick and tired of losing money on the PSP due to hackers and piracy. Now, of course My PSP is on CFW but I don't download games that I don't already have. Basically I only use the PSP as an NES and SNES Emulator because i have the original copies of the games that I have in the emulators.

Not necessarily, I own pretty much all the games I have in my emulators on my PSP. I only play the few games I found good on early NES and SNES systems like Mario, Megaman 2, Galaga, River City Ransom, Punch out!, etc. As far as PSP games go, most aren't worth the bandwidth used, unfortunately, to download them.

instead of stopping piracy they are only killing their own sales.its going to get cracked no matter what they do. but there really are some law abiding psp users that only want to fully unlock the full power of the hard ware they paid 169-300$ for by installing a custom firmware. now these few people who would have actually purchased the game will choose another title.

They convert X people from CFW back to OFW versus they lose Y sales because people can't play the game. The company doesn't gain from X and I am pretty sure Y would be the greater number anyway.

Like how certain games delete the ISO folder, that got blocked with a plugin. Idolmaster had some protection, people went and hex edited it out of the ISO

I use CFW too but pay for my games. I've imported over 50% of my collection becuase Europe has piss-poor support from Sony (we get games last and pay most for them). Give Macross Ace Frontier a go, it's awesome :)

First off all it does is check the ram, so if you could just inject an official firmware into the ram it would give you official for one boot, aka until you power down. Ram looses all its contents after shutdown in which it would read the flash and upload your CFW into the ram, as such making a temporary change of firmware.
I also believe that this will be quick because their are lot of eva junkies out their lol, and im one of them.

Sony doing this, are essentially trying to make you pick a side. The problem is if they keep trying copy preventive measures it will drive people away.
Look at PC games. Piracy is very high with it, because people don't want to deal with the copy protection.
BioShock I remember reading only allowed you to install the game a limited set of times. This really pissed people off and why buy it legally when maybe in the future you can't use it.
For my experience I had a modded PS1, I bought Sony games for it and it didn't work because of my console.
So my choice was to unmod my console or never buy a PS1 game again.
I think a similar thing is happening now with the PSP, people who buy the game legally might face a similar dilemma concerning the PSP.
This I think will drive more people toward piracy. People hate inconvenience.
Don't forget how Sony use to brick psp with that motherboard TA-085, even if your running homebrews, not pirated games,
Sony chose to brick your machines, by doing this creates contempt and people are no longer loyal and will turn towards piracy.
Loyalty is very important for Video game companies, they succeed and fail because of it.
