The PlayStation Portable is already in its third year of existence, but it looks like fans of the handheld can look forward to at least seven more years of PSP love from Sony.Talking to Pocket Gamer, Zeno Colaco, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe's vice president of publisher and developer relations, revealed that a ten-year lifespan is "certainly the long-term plan" for the handheld. "We definitely have the ambition for it to feature very strongly in the future, both on its own and also complimentary to PlayStation Network environment and the PS3," said Colaco. "But we'll have to wait a while before we can fully reveal the direction we're going in." The handheld's direction has been a point of contention recently, with publishers like Ubisoft urging Sony to come out with a clear plan of action for the PSP. So far, it looks Sony is banking on strong network services to convince devs and publishers that there is still money to made on the PSP, something that Colaco says will become apparent "over the next two years". they better up the amp in the psp's future fast if they want it to be a 10 year entertainment product.
i know sony can make it happen... the question is do they have the DETERMINATION to succeed with the psp? we'll have to see over the coming are of the handheld.

I believe that they will push Slims forward. Ten years lifetime? Ofcourse it's possible, but not for phat users - sorry to say that. Console lives as long, as there are games coming out. It's not about official firmware updates - who cares about them? What do you need them for, really? The most important thing in firmware updates is to be able to play new games, at least for me.

Why can't fat PSPs last 10 years if the slims can? They both use PSP format UMD discs.

Well I'm not offending you, but you see what is going on? Sony is concentrated on Slim. Skype only for Slim was the first step and I bet that there will be more of them.

Skype sucks and I would never get a slim for that.
Sony will not change the fat PSP's ability to play new games. No games will ever require the extra memory of the slim.

Just calm down. I didn't say that Skype rocks, so chill. All I'm saying is that phat users will miss a lot more 'features' like that. Ofcourse that you will say 'so what, I don't need this *****ty features like skype', because there's nothing else you can say even if you wanted to.

» even then it's not a ten year system
this is the equivalent of the PSone as in terms of shelf life. The PSP lacks many "well voiced" features in software as well as hardware.
The lack of a second (legitimate) analog stick is keeping the system back in terms of game play that Sony has already spoiled us with. The PSP slim and lite is a novel place holder but hardly enough to warrant a new purchase.
I understand the need to get back to even and hopefully above in an economic stand point. But I just don't see this hand held being in my daily playlist of well tended games over the next ten years.
We know Sony is capable of making this a ten year product, but without a few revisions on strategy and development.... I just don't see it
I love the PSP and what it has brought me so far..... I just see the trend with electronics nowadays. they pound out a product and mold it through new generations. What entertainment product has been in the same style, operations and features over a ten year period?

As much as I'd love to see PSP survive that long without a much improved successor in the next couple of year, the only way it's gonna happen if Sony get their sh-t together and give us the following very soon-
1. More unique and original games!
2. Fewer but better, more significant firmware updates, with useful features like Divx support, flash update, Youtube app, music and video organisation features, stream multimedia directly from a PC without a PS3, etc
3. Access software-based Playstation Store from PSP XMB, and not one designed like the sh-ta$$ PC or the old PS3 browser store. Add at least 2 PS1 games per week to ALL regions. Add a VOD section to download latest tv shows and movies directly to PSP.
4. Release a well-designed keyboard.
5. Embrace the homebrew scene. Let's face it, there's nothing Sony can do to prevent people from hacking the PSP. At least by encouraging legal, safe and useful homebrew development they can attract more people to own a PSP. Set up some kind of homebrew download centre or something, like how Apple is trying to do with software development for the iPhone.
Do these things and I guarantee no one will be able to resist buying a PSP.

» Well put!
I agree they spend to much time doing nothing.
If we all pray there maybe a chance to get some of these. Forget about them "Embrace the homebrew scene" the closest they'll get to that is ripping off the homebrew scenes projects in putting them into the firmware.
Wanting them to "Embrace the homebrew scene" is like waiting for Sony to install the second nub. Sometimes you just have to do it yourself.

» You guys are dumb
Seriously, stop whing, sony has done more than enough to support the psp. Where do you get off demanding that sony puts these very difficult things into the psp, get a clue. and what's hard to believe about a 10 year lifespan, the ps2 is 7 years old and still going strong, this doesn't mean they have to wait 10 years to release the psp2

yeah the PS2 is 7 years old... but how many style and hardware changes did they go through.
this is the trial run.... no way this hardware is slated for a 10 year lifespan. Quit being defensive and acting like an over zealous fanboy.
I am not knocking the PSP, or Sony. I am merely stating my OPINION. Not saying Sony owes us or anything like that..... but this is not the final hardware for a 10 year plan.

» Can you read?
It said nothing about hardware changes in the article, it said the psp in general, fat and slim. Why don't you just go play the other handheld that can do all those things... oh wait

You missed the part where I said "without a much improved successor in the next couple of years". That would make PSP 5 years old, which is a decent lifecycle for even a console system. PSP is not the PS2, which has a ton of great games, it is cheap and is the most successful console of all time. PSP is not even in that league despite all that it can do.
Having said that, whether or not Sony release a PSP 2 or another PSP update, none of the suggestions I made above have anything to do with hardware changes. Those are software and peripheral improvements that Sony must make to the existing PSP if they intend to keep it up-to-date even 2 years from now and also compete with the other handheld systems. Instead of giving us lame updates like Google search, they need to make fewer but bigger updates. That would give them sufficient time to come up with useful features and avoid disappointments.

Well it is a wishful thinking, that's why it's the last item on my list.

please stop whining about the psp. its perfect. movies(the picture is pretty awesome i might add), games, internet, music, and now with skype you can use it as a phone. what more do you want? don't change a thing. please don't add a second stick. if i'm on a long trip and want to watch a movie i don't want to look like i'm 10 holding a controller for 2 hours. anyways i'm done. psp 4ever

» Agree
I completely agree with you, BUT movie quality does not depend on handheld or screen it is displayed, rather on the presets like video bitrate, codec etc. - just for your interest ;)

» Yeah right
Ten years? I think he means another year, maybe two at the most. Mine is already gathering enough dust...
Without offending anyone, I'd like to say the PSP is really crappy in total right now. It had so much potential..so much...yet it was wasted...or pushed off to some date in the far future Sony has been calling "soon" for the past three years. I don't think anything at this point can resuscitate the PSP. Maybe if they were to do something amazing. Maybe if they actually cared about the gamers.
It has only been three years...and the PSP is running very dry, I doubt it will make it to ten.
It's working for the PS2, but the PS2 had very good support.
On a different note, a DS 2 will be amazing... hopefully it has good graphics... at least I know that Nintendo knows how to handle their handhelds ;).
