v2.70 FAQ

The recent release of PSP Firmware v2.70 has made people wonder about the possible effect this new software could have on the future of Homebrew.

To clear up some of those questions, Fanjita evaluated the new firmware and constructed a quick FAQ:
  • Homebrew does not work on v2.7. The GTA exploit is thoroughly patched, and the TIFF exploit is still patched [Confirmed by QJ.NET already].
  • It's unknown when homebrew will be available on v2.7. A whole new exploit needs to be developed.
  • In Fanjita's opinion (shared with EdisonCarter) there is no future for the GTA exploit on v2.7.
  • LocoRoco is an encrypted, signed EBOOT. The only way to run homebrew in the same way is to get Sony's encryption key and sign the homebrew. This is impossible.
  • There could possibly be an exploit to be found in all the new function, e.g. flash player, AAC support, etc. Fanjita and his team are not currently working on one.
  • There might be an exploit to be found in another game. Fanjita and his team are not currently working on one.
  • There's no truth in the rumour that v2.7 has made Fanjita and his team angry, and that they are going to work on an ISO loader as revenge.
  • The LocoRoco demo REQUIRES v2.70, even if you hack the PARAM.SFO in the EBOOT.
Following this, he drawn the conclusion that the firmware upgrade brings little benefits (therefore, it is not worth upgrading) due to slow support in regards to Macromedia Flash files and the possibility that we might not see v2.70 compatible homebrew for at least the next few months.

 » REVENGE ON $$ONY

Someone, I dont care who it is, Fanjita, Ditlew, Humma Kavula (come back kid we need your help) should absolutly create an ISO loader as revenge on $ONY. This is complete Bull S_it! I promise you I'll never buy a PSP game again and im glad your F'ing UMD's have flopped. Im downloading some CD's and ISO's off a torrent right now $ONY, screw you and your "security".

 » Come on Guys

You bought the PSP
you asked for games
Sony wants you to play those games you asked for
so they need you not to play games htat arent theirs
so they have money to make a better PSP that fixes the problems this one has
Its your choice to update
THose who did, Im sure you had a reason
Those who didnt Im sure you also had a reason
But DONT EVER
insult People who spend their free time to use and exploit loops in the firmware for you because you dont want to pick up a damn book and learn how. THey have done great things that most of you dont even know waht they did
so give Fanjita, Ditlew, and Sony a break
Sony just wants a profit so they dont loose money, thus ending up like SEGA. And If Sony ends up like SEGA, and drops thier hardware, guess what
WE are all stuck with PSP and PS2 and PS3 that, updated or not, arent getting any new games

and to tell you the truth, as much of a blessing Homebrews, Fanjita, Ditlew and their works are, Id much rather own a console that is still being developed on then one that Id have to depend on two people to let me play games I can play for real either on the orignial console or my PC

 » Homebrew for PSP

Has anyone thought about this? We can actually cooperate with $ony on this.

They can have a homebrew programme. Where you submit your code to them to be signed, if it's ok with them (that means no ISO loaders and stuff), they sign it and you can release it.

This is a win-win for both us and $ony. For $ony, the PSP gets a whole lots more applications, while we get homebrew.

Of course some people is going to argue that allowing this might decrease sales of games. Well they can always refuse to sign emulators and homebrew games while allowing programs like book3r.

 » Sigh...

The people who upgraded should live with there mistakes. And the people who are bashing... You need to think about what Fanjita and Ditlew doing. How hard it is to break Sony's security. He is doing it for free as well. They could stop at any time if they pleased. I'm thinking that they should take a break for a mounth or two or however long they please. That, or not release it to the public for a bit of time. So ask your selfs this: Can you hack the PSP's security? And if you could, would you give it out for free? I'm thinking not.

 » Just curious....

Sorry, this is kind of a stupid question, but I'm curious. Would any of the downgraders that are out there now work on 2.7?

by Anonymous Coward (Unregistered) - 2006-04-25
 » i like #48

#48 makes a good point why not have sony approve of applications before hand so it is a win-win situation. We get homebrew and they get sky rocketing sales. I like this idea but sony would have to do a lot of tests of the homebrew cuz it would look bad if the homebrew they approved didnt work right. Also they should come out with there own programs like a remote or sumthing

wasnt the origonal idea for eboots based off of the actual updates, so wouldnt it be possible to work on getting the "update" of 1.5 working or is there that whole no writing to flash thing still goin on. (thinking aloud)

"The only way to run homebrew in the same way is to get Sony's encryption key and sign the homebrew. This is impossible. " - fanjita

Why can we not get the encryption key?
Can you explain a theoretical encryption key that would work well for this type of application?

Thanks,

Jimbo

 » Here we go again

Every single time... New updates. New retards making stupid comments. Then there's the war that broke out between the two sides...

Then the topic gets old... then everyone forgets about it....

Then the new firmware gets released.... rinse and repeat. Except maybe with every recursion, we may lose some homebrew dev thanks to the retards.

» Sony accept homebrew? yah right.

half the games are roms, or ports, not likely. The original apps/games are awesome, but could you see sony actually creating an entire new department of legal, coders, PR, and distribution for it? doubtful

 » Beginner's Experiment

Eh, this doesn't have to do with 2.7 really...

Anyway, I loaded up the 2.0 Japanese update through PSP Cheat Hacker, and dumped the memory after all was initiated. I then compared the data to the unencrypted Japanese DATA.PSP file I had in a rar named "WAB_decrypted_UPDATER_US_&_JAP_2.0.rar".

Structure was very much the same, but there were big chunks of differences in the beginning and the end. In the beginning, an ELF header was missing from my memory dump, probably 'coz the psp already used it and didn't need it?? And there was a nice block of data below the bottom of what was the end of the normal decrypted data.psp from that rar.

So I tried inserting that ELF header from the normal decrypted data.psp and rebuilding the boot.pbp, but got the 80020001 error after a lot of black screen. I'm wondering if the data.psp has to be re-encrypted, but I have no idea on how that would be done. -_-

Since I have nowhere to post these types of files, it'll be on the edk network as "rd's_psp_2.0_JP_UpdateExperiments.rar"

» Er, explanation of Beginner's Experiment

Doh, forgot to say, the idea behind my small experiment, was to see if the "signed app" key could be figured out by looking in the psp's running memory. I tried to run the LocoRoco demo to compare, but since it's 2.7+, it wasn't decrypted into memory and I just got an exact copy of the eboot.pbp in memory as a result.

 » Ok My Verdict...

...By Andrew Briggs

Having 3 PSP's I have managed to sort them into order for example PSP 1 is my normal PSP that plays all games and has the latest upgrades, PSP 2 has all my homebrew software on and a 2GB card as standard and PSP 3 is my PSP that i am hacking myself atm. PSP 1 has had the new update 2.7 and I have to say it really is not worth getting so dont bother. Fanjita has done a good job with his ebooters etc so the more he does the better and its bad that some people are even slagging him off for using his spare time to make us gamers happy. I am going to work on this 2.7 trying to look for loopholes in the software too and hopefully if i find any they will be posted straight to fanjita for testing. All I will say is that there IS a loophole within the Music section of your memory stick however I am trying to code this at this very minute and its getting difficult haha. Take care everybody...

» thay should take a break

fanjita and ditlew should take a break til 3.0 find bugs then cuz its not worth finding a good bug for such a crappy update

by Anonymous Coward (Unregistered) - 2006-04-25
 » Good Idea...

...By Andrew Briggs

I never thought of that actually cuz this is just a lil taster of 3.0 really.

Ill carry on this coding anyway nether or less but perhap fanjita should just carry on entertaining 2.7- users

Excellent Comment above :D
