2.71 Update

Well, after the 2.71 news update, we finally have the 2.7 upgrade EBOOT available for download. We've already documented the new features in the earlier article. I'll still just go thru the new 'features' if you can call them that.
  • Game demos like Loco Roco and Kazuo can be downloaded and stored on Memory Stick
  • Some fixes related to Location Free Base Players (LF-B1 and LF-X11)
I'll say it even though most of you guys know it. Homebrew doesn't run on 2.70 and above currently. Period. If you upgrade your PSP, you're doing it at your own discretion. Secondly, this new upgrade doesn't mean that there was an exploit in 2.7. If you're thinking it is so, stop.

In case you're hell bent of getting rid of homebrew on your PSP, go ahead and download the update. After saving the EBOOT.PBP file, make a UPDATE folder in the PSP folder of the Memory Stick, and put the file in there. And yes, before upgrading, remember to say bye-bye to homebrew.

"Homebrew doesn't run on 2.70 and above currently. Period."

How long have we been "warned" about upgrading. And still it keeps getting hacked. Show me QUALITY homebrew and I'm in. But I haven't seen any yet. Everything is beta this and buggy that. Graphics look like crap. No sound. Poor framerates. Give me a break!

The last 2 upgrades provided by Sony havent had any useful features so whats the point?

 » weird

well seems odd that sony would release a update so soon,in fact every update that has come out in jp comes to uk a few days later.
strange that this has been rushed out so quick to all regions

so since you can put the demos on your memory stick, why cant someone just compare what allows the to demo to work, and why isos wont work and then add or take away what is or isnt needed?

 » oh the irony

lmao......its really ironic how 'PSPUpdates' hates....erm.....PSP updates lol.

but yh....unless they release a reasonably useful firmware update.....i doubt anyone would be upgrading. on the other hand.......i bet the dev's will discover a exploit for 2.7 and then you get them little 10 year olds coming in the comments section saying "oh man....i wish i did neva upgrade my psp to 2. 7111111!!".

people, stick with your current firmware PLEASE.

anyone know if the yet to be realeased modchip "undiluted platinum" will work with this firmware

 » hmmmmm

after reading no.12's comment im starting to wonder.......maybe sony rushed this firmware release out because they discovered an exploit in firmware 2.7 before the public did? hmmmm........it would be interesting if there was an actual exploit in 2.7.....maybe one that can even run homebrew more fluently than 2.0.

Did anyone get the psptv tab under [NETWORK]? after upgrading.

Also, to avoid flames, I have two psp's so I do keep one of them at the highest firmware.

» >The icon "Goto Network Service" has been added into the "Network" column.

This "fact" in untrue. I've updated myself and that option is not there(I've confirmed this with many users on other message boards). As for homebrew on 2.71? I wasen't even aware homebrew was availible for anything higher than 2.6. You guys are getting sloppy...

 » wtf..

No problem with upgrading, especially that now some actual good games are coming out. If I ever want homebrew, I just pull out my GP2X. The PSX emulator on there is already released and progressing. :D

» Jap Firmware v2.71 may be different to EU and US versions

Here's a thing:

I decided to update using the psp's built in wifi network update function this time, instead of going through yourpsp.com

I ended up with the new firmware (v2.71) as expected, and the new features were as described on yourpsp.com except I've also ended up with a new icon under "Network" called "Portable television", which takes me straight to "P-tv" - the Japanese service that lets you pay for and download jap tv clips direct to your psp (except that I cant work out how to because I dont speak japanese! - a shame in a way, as it appears to be advertising free downloads of world cup highlights, but thats another story...)

I'm assuming it did this because I've got a jap psp, so the network update function has directed it to the jap psp firmware's server.

Thing is, so far we've all been under the impression that the network updates are identical across territories. However, I'm willing to bet that the US and EU firmware v2.71 dont include this P-tv feature (I cant test them out on my psp now I've updated it using the jap one because if I try to install the EU firmware update over the jap one, it wont do it and tells me there is no need to update as I have the latest system software)

Just thought I'd mention it because if future firmware updates are going to become increasingly tailored to territory, then this may have implications for those of us who have Jap or US psps (such as, do you opt for the firmware update from the same region as your psp to absolutely ensure compatablility, or go for the EU one in case it includes EU specific features?)

 » wtf?!

hmmm...not much in this update other than "security" i see. Don't upgrade! Stay with homebrew, which is free! #5, quality homebrew is in the making. Remember that these betas like iris and the N64 emulators will someday become quality games that anyone would love to have on a handheld. The PSX emulator will undoubtedly require the latest firmware plus a lot of money, but guess what, the n64 is a much better system with more great classics like zelda and donkey kong. Nintendo didn't switch to an audience that consists purely of four-year-old ***** suckers until the gamecube!

my point being, just like in all of my posts, $ony can go to hell for updating its "security" and throwing in some small benefits to get people to upgrade. Man, just get a UMD loader, then ur laughing at $ony when ur running the newest games on a 1.5 PSP! Homebrew web browsers and flash players are being worked on in the meantime
