Undiluted Platinum PSP Modchip

So it seems the race with Sony - finding new exploits as the Playstation Portable's firmware gets updated - may soon be over for good: The first PSP modchip, Undiluted Platinum, will soon arrive, acting as a flash replacement. According to the manufacturer, it will now be possible to use older or even custom firmwares!

The chip has been designed to fit entirely inside the Playstation Portable. Unsigned homebrew code will run even on the latest PSP systems!

We don't have much more details to offer yet apart from the picture, but more information will arrive next week - so stay tuned for more updates - we're as excited as you are!

it'll only run older firmwares right? that means there are still limitations to what it can do. hmm i wonder if this will also be the case with the ps3. oh well.

 » true??

How do we know this is real? maybe it's just some dude that got bored and made a "modchip" in 3d.
Is there anyone who can confirm(with proof) that this chip is true

 » 1.5

I have a 1.5 psp but this would be nice to have to be able to develop for the psp and be able to play all the latest games too. I'd upgrade if I knew I could always run unsigned code at will :)

 » how long?

i have feeling that this, much like the original PSone's modchips will not be all in all successful at allowing new games to be played while mantaining it's wonderful benifits...
fireware 3.0 update will check for this or something

People with 1.50s don't need this, but it will allow 2.6 users who are willing to install it to have 1.50 firmware.

Here come all the noobs asking how to play ISOs with it...

you dont need it. only if they will make custom firmwares that will have all the abilities of the latest firmware while still run homeraw>>

   by Destructo - 2006-05-26

This would be good for people with any firmware including 1.5. You will be able to have a custom firmware, such as a firmware with funcionality of 2.7, but still can run unsigned code as a 1.0 or 1.5.

Buying a new PSP would be better than this...imagine that sony releases a firmware that detects and rejects this piece of Hardware, then what? 100-200$ wasted..
Also Sony will probably drop the price again by christmas so there is no point in this (specially since UMDs cant be burnt)

Well those people with 1.5 thinking "why the hell do I want this" well if it allows you to run the higher firmware without actually updating it might have a purpose. I want to run the camera without updating and I hope this allows that.

 » saviour

this will be my saviour

i havent been here for a month cause my 2.01 psp is broken

i get a new one next week i think but it will be with 2.7 i quess or the people at sony are very lazy and dont upgrade the refurbished psp,s
which would be wonderfull but i dont caunt on it

so if this comes out it would be real great

because now my only option is to get the new 2.7 and never use it again cause i dont play those sony games at all or sell my new coming 2.7 psp and buy a 2.01 or even better a 1.5

   by brins0 - 2006-05-26
 » Cool, but...

I wonder how many different firmwares this will support at once, and how you would select them? Maybe it could sign code for you, live, or bypass the checks, so you wouldn't need to have other firmwares on it...

We'd still haev the problem with the PRXs tho, if we all still ran 1.50, so it would not catch on till we have custom firmwares available... and then, why use a modchip, when you could just flash the custom one directly onto ure psp...

Would still be pretty smart, and i'd pay upto £50 for it, merrily...

 » RITE!

OK for anyone with any doubts, this will let you run ISO's
ON 2.7, custom firmware WILL come out
in other words, you will have a 2.7 with the capabilities of 1.5, 2.7 and more, GET EXCITED!

 » Solder????????????????????????

mmh..need more info

It will require opening up your psp -- so its gona be a no go for most noobs....
Then im guessing you will have to remove some hardware..and solder this chip in..wont be easy for a noob
i seriously doubt it will be solderless- plug and play chip..hehe

 » Flash replacement?

So has anyone else considered the possiblity that this could be used to recover a bricked PSP?

As for the people that apparently have no clue what a mod chip is good for, here's a clue. It doesn't matter what firmware you have. 1.0/1.5 have limitations as to what games you can run. 2.7 has limitations on what homebrew you run. A mod chip can conceivably remove all of those limitations for everyone. The 1.0/1.5 people could run ISO loaders to play even the newest games much more easily. Theoretically, no screwing around with modifying the ISO file would be needed to make it work. The 2.7 firmware folks get access to running all the homebrew they can handle while maintaining the ability to use all the new official stuff.

As for being able to detect this chip, that's definitely a concern. I guess it will depend on how the chip functions. If the PSP is unable to distinguish it from the original flash rom, then it may work seamlessly. Many mod chips out there can be detected by the console. My PS1 is chipped and Legends of Dragoon and a lot of the later gen titles for that system won't work (even original discs) if the chip is powered on. I ended up installing a toggle switch on the front my PS1 to turn the chip on and off.

 » NOOO!

AARRGGHH! DON'T RELEASE THE CHIP YET! Sony's waiting for a breakthrough before they release 3.0 so they can patch the firmware to lock the breakthrough out!

WAIT TILL 3.0'S OUT, THEN RELEASE THE CHIP! That way we've got all the 3.0 features as well as 1.5!
