Ó

For the past couple of weeks, the PSP-mod scene lay witness to a bunch of analog hacks that involve soldering (yikes!) left- and right-analog sticks onto your Sony handheld. While those are really innovative and, of course, a tad bit scary to do, we're still impressed nonetheless. However, the simpler a solution is, the more impressive it becomes.

To hell with soldering those so-called "Ghetto Sticks". Here's a simpler alternative from V0odOo: why not attach a PS2 DualShock controller via USB? No need to subject your device to hardware attacks. No need to worry about busting open your system. From what it looks like, what we have here is a simple plug-and-play mod! Check it out:

Now, we really don't know how this guy was able to work it out. He most likely needed some driver mod for the PSP to recognize the Dualshock controller. Also, we're not even sure if the Rumble feature works (unless of course that weird sound in the vid is actually the Rumble at work). Including a Rumble mod would have needed some extra work for the PSP to send signals to the controller whenever it should vibrate. Whatever it took for this guy to do it, we're giving him two thumb sticks up for innovation!

This is a feature of iR Shell 3.0 and the user in that video IS using iR Shell. The feature is called Keypad Redirection and works via USBhostFS and NetHostFS Redirection (WiFi and USB).

Here's an article about iR Shell:
http://pspupdates.qj.net/index.php?pg+49+aid+74739

Here are some videos made by AhMan, the coder of iR Shell, himself some months ago. They show the same thing:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v+YGF6pGpHRSE
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v+NpJIc-Cdrt0

This works via PC Keyboard, PC Game Controller or XBOX/XBOX360 controller and requires a PC.

i would benefit grately from this mod if anyone would share a tutorial ill give this a go as it looks 99% risk free from the other anolog mods.

the only small down side to this would be that the ps2 needs power thus shortening the life of you psp's battery but im willing to over look that one

cool mod nice work!

can ir shell somehow do this with a logitech wireless ps2 controller?

   Re: StoneCut (Unregistered) - 2006-12-05
 » unlikely

The controller needs to be connected to the PC. The guy in the video is using a PS2->PC adapter and iR Shell with Keypad Redirection feature for USB or WiFi (requires PC running a server application).

I don't know if such a PS2->PC adapter exists for PS2 *wireless* controllers.

Any regular PC gamepad (or XBOX/XBOX360 controller) works straight out of the box, however. The PC keyboard, too.

YES, plug un the logitech wireless receiver at the ps2-pc controller adaptor then to pc then use ir-shell etc. pretty much the same as a normal ps2 controller except wireless.

 » question to vodoo

Hey I knew about the special iRshell feature, works for me in XMB & iRshell app itself by usb, but can't get it to work once I launched Dhook...I've heard it MAY work through wifi, is that true, assuming you're really the guy who did the video, or was it something else, like playing a UMD with NO Firmware emulation, through usb, wifi?? details pleaaaaaaase i've been dreaming to play FPS games with dual analog... :D

PS: a devhook external controller mod would be nice though, as usb 1-to-2 adapters HAVE to be cheap and much more convenient than solder the whole thing ;)

   Re: StoneCut (Unregistered) - 2006-12-05
 » It works in DevHook

If you are on SE-C just do this:
Enable USBhostFS and simply launch an ISO from
DIR view in 2.71 EBOOT of iR Shell with the ISO plugin.

For UMDs just enable USBhostFS and simply launch a UMD.

For DevHook, it currently only works for **UMDs**, however and you must follow this procedure:

"Launch DevHook" -> "Start UMD with iR Shell"

Also, you must use the devhook files that come with iR Shell.

The same applies if you want to do Keypad Redirection via NetHostFS, which is also possible.

Please note that this will not work with all games.

 » looks fake though

still looks fake though, far too many finger movements compared to what the car on screen is actually doing, and when the car does move it's completely opposite to what his fingers are dong.

   by soopergooman - 2006-12-05
 » YOU ARE ALL WRONG!!!!

Judging from the above video I can safely say that this video is fake kinda. Kinda you ask? Well he may be using a ps2 controller but he is using it with PSP2TV like what I have.

You see the positioning of his psp, well its the same exact distance from the tabletop as is my psp2tv unit. It is the True way to hook up a ps2 controller to ur psp, either the wired controller will work or the logitec wireless one will work.
Also you can watch aforementioned games on any tv you want to use with it.

Nice video but I still say Fake atleast until a tutorial is posted or when we get a clear video with the lights on. I don't understand these "dark" videos.

Are you trying to make it look fake to begin with or is it that you don't have any videography talent.

One thing to remember: have your light source from above not behind you or in front of the camera, that way there is a lack of shadowing and everyone will get to see all.

Unless you ARE hiding things......

 » Hypothetical Question for Devs/Mods

If you take:

1. PS2 Controller + PS2toUSB adapter OR a USB PC Controller (with analog sticks).
2. USB A Female to Mini USB Male Adapter.
3. PSP
4. A homebrew app to read the buttons pressed on the controller.

Would it work?

Seems possible, Would be sweet to use with the superjoy(snes controller adapter) or the one for ps1/2 controls.
that is actually a good idea.
Anything is possible with kernal mode!
   by V0odOo (Unregistered) - 2006-12-05
 » No

I'm the real V0odOo, this is actually a mod made by my friend psdonkey which you connect your ps2 controller to a signal box and it sends a signal to the psp so you can use your ps2 controller to play your psp, this was made by psdonkey to play his perfect full speed working N64 emulator with all the necessary buttons since he saw that the psp does not support all buttons. Anyways I will meet my friend psdonkey tomorrow at school which will show me his almost 100% finished ps1 emulator that runs ccd image files on it and his software that allows him to watch local channels on your psp without the need of a wi-fi hotspot.

Also he may release his perfect working ps1 emulator if you people ask psdonkey for forgiveness. Remember that he was the only coder capable of making a full speed N64 emulator so you should respect my friend psdonkey because not even Daedalus's rom selection menu runs at 50% full speed.

"$title Goodbye

September 3rd, 2006, 04:44 Posted By: PSmonkey

Sorry to do this to you all but it is the end for PSmonkey.

As of last monday I started my new job at a big name publisher/developer to work on psp games. Sadly due to my contract I no longer can continue to do homebrew development (well atleast cant release it). It's a sad thing for my scene work but the best move I can make for my self comercialy (since my previous company was going no where and I was sick and tired of coding DS games based on a stupid license).

Yet there is no reason to be sad or angry. My work will continue on though other coders. I already have some coders who wish to continue two of my main projects.

Yes Iris 0.3 is still comming. I have a few people interested in redoing the game like I inteded as well as coninue to progress KohKae engine.

Sandbox is also not going anywhere. One of this scene's great coders is going to pick up where I left off to continue the game.

Regarding my other projects, I personaly will continue my fight to conker N64 & DD emulation on the PSP. M64 will still continue but no releases will be made public. I will how ever make my DD research public once finished.

ngPsp 1.3 ( the neogeo pocket emu) is still comming, A friend is gonna finish writing a GUI for my latest version.

Other then that, sadly all my other work is now dead (new fps will migrate into Iris 0.3, beat-em-up is dead).

That's it.

I will still lurk around and try to help people out with technical info but it will be sad to no longer work on homebrew for the scene I loved so much. Yet who knows what the future will bring and maybe I will end up being in a position that it's legaly posible for me to do homebrew again.

- Goodbye -
PS, sorry that I used will and grace image below. It's the only bow I could find close to what I wanted."

Yeah, i don't think your the real voodoo since he left for his job not because of complaints and stuff. Also, he can't realese homebrew anymore because of his job. Hmmmm, are you sure he will give you a 100% working emulator? I don't think so
