Future

Zion, a developer from our forums has released v1.3 of his Future-Resurrection homebrew game for the PSP. The storyline starts with a man who awakens from a coma, but realises that the world is no longer the same, reminiscent of the film '28 Days Later'. Here's what Zion had to say about this release:

"The game is very much still in alpha stage. but is improving day by day. I'm working on sprite animation, but want to code it in a new way, so its taking a bit of time. I have nearly got the interactive conversation aspect done, but i want to refine it a bit more." New features for v1.3 include an in-game menu, a proper title screen, collision detection, two CPU controlled characters and now comes packaged in EBOOT form so you don't have to use Lua Player to launch it.

Zion has released this version to prove to those that weren't very confident in this game on the last release that it is still being worked on and will be a worthwhile game. This isn't one of those games that get released at the alpha stage then gets forgotten about and left behind. Well done Zion!

Seriously qj, stop posting newb crap. So he made a simple little this with a few images blitted here and there. All it is is a little app where you move an image around. He's working on collision detection and AI before he even has animation done! And he hasn't even though out how he will scroll, has he? Sad.

i'd like to see you do all of those thing.
exacatly you can't.

Actually, I can and have. I'm even considering putting out the source. Don't asume stuff about people you don't know.

 » OH YEAH

Zettablade the great dev .... common guys how could we forget about him ?!?!?!?!

Don't lie about handing out the source - people who are serious just do it.

 » O rly?

and what would you know? I said I'd think about it, but If I did I would have to clean it up, and that can be a pain in the ass.

Ive seen my fair share of these so called games. One thing you must realize is that LUA is a fairly weak, resource hungry scripting program, especially on the psp. Just look at those wannabe remakers of games: starcraft psp, warcraft, and all those others.

This one MAY be able to be pulled off, if its just a side-scrolling, talk-to-people, move-around-a-2d-background program/game. From what I've seen however, it seems that getting an image on the screen and moving images is fairly easy stuff (again look at those wannabe remakes), but they fail when it comes to anything more complex.

To be fair, I would say I am a little "racist" in terms of lua, as in if it was made in c/++, i'd be more of a beleiver.

To Zettablade, if you disagree with me or any other naysayer (i wouldnt expect any less), you dont have to post a comment, just show us off with a decent release somewhere down the road (ie, not alpha but with all your touted features)

All i hear is excuses, blah blah its a pain in the ass.....prove it to me so by releasing the uncleaned version just to see if you have worked on something....i mean come on, who has ever heard of zettablade...i thought so.. G'MAN!!

   by Bobo (Unregistered) - 2006-07-12
 » I'm laughing... Seriously.

So you're such a great dev but you make excuses when someone asks for the source.... You don't "have" to do anything except release the source.

And at first EVERYONE is a newb, so either release the source or stop calling people newbs, or both maybe.

One more thing, QJ dosen't make you visit THEIR site, you do it on your own free will, so if you don't like what they're posting, leave.

@9 - I agree, lua is crap. It's an awful language, and should die a slow, agonizing death. I'm working on a shell right now. I don't have much time though due to summer school(I should be doing homework right now), but it's coming along good. I'll probably release it when I get the skin system, photo view, music player, and video player finished.

@10 && 11 - You don't understand do you. When I say it's a pain in the ass to go through there and write all the comments so noobs like you can understand, I mean it's a pian in the ass to write all the comments so noobs like you can understand!!!! I'll release it eventually, but not right now. I really am too busy. Don't believe me, but it's true.

ph, and #11, I was never a noob, and I refuse to think otherwise :)

All LUA games sucks. Stop wasting our time by posting this crap. WE all HATE LUA games. PERIOD.

 » #14

see, #14 is smart. If you wanna make a game, do it in c, then i might actually be nice and help. Any for the person who is going to say that he's not ready for c, keep in mind, just cause you suck at it doesn't mean everyone does.

» I posted last time and here we go again

I just have to say sorry to the creator of the game...sorry your getting a bashing about this...

But as i said last time this game was on the news page....Stop posting stupid Lua games as front page news!

At the end of the day its great to see people making stuff....But its never going to be something that we are all going to play as a real game...

Lua is a ***** lang and at the moment will never mount to anything great....

Pleaseeeee stop posting lua ***** as front page news

   by Bobo (Unregistered) - 2006-07-12
 » Ok

@14. I'll say it again, no one is forcing you to come here, if you don't like it, LEAVE, period.

@15. Ok, I understand what you're saying about the source now, but still, LUA was made as a more simple stand alone language as well as to benefit C in many was. Don't diss it because it's not as powerful, it can produce great things! Just give it some time. Just look at Meeku's Quest for example! I haven't seen a C coded psp RPG anywhere near that quality!

You were a N00B, you just didn't know it. :)

 » Uhm looks crappy

I dont want to hurt anyones feelings but this games does indeed look crappy , I doubt it was worth the effort to download and to actually put it on my psp.
The charackters look ridiculous stupid and I heard people saying that all you can do is move the picture around.

- Is this a joke ? if it is not please dont post "games" where the only thing u can do is to move a picture , this feature is already build in the psp when you watch an ordinary picture on it.

 » Cut it out

There's nothing wrong with Lua. It's just the majority of coders. They somehow feel the need to release their basic work because they think it's going to be big. That doesn't mean there's anything wrong with Lua. Again I'm plugging the game, but have you played the Meeku's Quest tech demo? It's an example of how amazing something can be made in Lua. It's an example of REAL programming in Lua.

Let's just put it this way: If you hate Lua, you are a racist.

   by Zettablade - 2006-07-12
 » lol

@17 - No one is forcing me to come here, but I love dissing lua. anywyas, Lua isn't made for programming, it's made for simple tasks that help a program in c++. making a game in lua is like using a s***** to hitch a trailer. It's not gonna happen.

@18 - Yeah, I can't believe I ever put it on my psp, feels like I wasted a part of my life.

 » @All the flamers

All of you, firstly : Shut UP.

If you want people to make homebrew games for your PSP, support them. If you want homebrew to die in a pit, then carry on flaming. Spend your time coding instead of flaming, it's more useful.

Nothing nice to say: simple - Don't say it.

 » Lua is not bad!

It's getting really annoying seeing people write bad things about Lua when they obviously know nothing about it. Firstly, you must realize that Lua is a scripting language. It is inherently slower than other languages like C because it interpreted by a virtual machine rather than being compiled to native machine code. Secondly, a scripting language is designed to be used for two things: scripting parts of code that are changed very often to avoid repeatedly compiling an entire program (for example an AI in a game or behaviours in an interface) and for quick prototyping of a system that will eventually be rewritten in a faster language. Lua has been given a bad name because people throw together something simple and get on the front page for it.
Anybody who says that Lua is a bad language and everything written in it is bad is only advertising their ignorance. Lua is among the fastest scripting languages as shown by benchmarks such as http://shootout.alioth.debian.org/gp4/lua.php . It is also heavily used in industry in games such as FarCry, Homeworld 2, and World of Warcraft. An extensive list of projects Lua has been used in is here http://www.lua.org/uses.html .

In short, Lua is very good at what it does, which is SCRIPTING. Do not judge it based on programs written solely using Luaplayer as they are not SCRIPTS.

Zettablade is right wtf r u iodoits talkin about lua sucks ass i mean who rely uses it any way becuz ive tried makin a game there....and it was just gay so im makin a new game for regular psp....GAY LUA!!!!

 » lol

i tried lua and fell asleep but c++ is still confusing to me and any help as to how to make my own game engine would be appericated

   by Zettablade - 2006-07-12
» Last time I'm gonna comment

@27 - Lua is used in commercial games, but it isn't used heavily. If the game relies on lua too much, it WILL crash. Only an idiot would use lua. any real dev can tell you trying to make a game with it is the worst thing you can do, because that automatically makes you a noob. deny the facts while you can, but lua is corrupt young programmers every where, and it has no future.

   by Advertising -
   by Soban (Unregistered) - 2006-07-12
 » @30

That is correct. Lua is used to script, not to program an entire game in. In that context it performs excellently. It should not be used to program an entire game though, because it is simply not fast enough. This is exactly what I said previously and I am not denying any facts.

   by Sumo X - 2006-07-12
 » So much hot air

LUA is a great language for small games. I agree that nobody should get this notion that they're going to create some epic game out of LUA.

That said, those of you bashing this release simply because it's coded in LUA are absolute morons. I hope Zion doesn't listen to you guys at all because it's people like you who are ruining this scene. I hope somebody updates your PSPs to 2.71 and we never figure out how to downgrade them.

My suggestion to QJ is to perhaps be more judicious when posting WIP games. If a game has significant functions, even in a demo stage, then it's worth posting. But any less than that, I'd say leave it on the forums.

 » Needs much work

If I were you i'd animate some better sprites, so the legs actually move. Not offence..just a suggestion. You were probably already planning on that.

Good work so far though, keep it up.
