GTA clone

I've got some good news for all the vintage GTA fans out there. Agashka from our forums is working on a GTA clone for the PSP - and he's actually made some decent progress! It's being coded in Lua and although there are no plans for making missions as yet, Agashka has already got the driving part sorted out. Here's what he said about it:

"Hey guys, My name is Vincent, I am 15 years old and new to programming. I've been working hard today on making GTA2 to PSP. Right now, the basic function is here, drive the car.How it works? Well, left/right will set a value to Rotate, and that value will decide witch degree is the car and 'blit' that car. Then I do a Sinus/Cosinus operation to determinate the X/Y position on that angle."

Don't worry if that makes no sense to you, but basically it allows the car to move using Lua code. This would be a great addition to the PSP homebrew scene, and shows off how powerful Lua really is. Here's the list of goals:
  • 3 layers:
    • collision
    • road and stuff - DONE
    • Things that appear over the car - DONE (not yet implemented)
  • NPC
    • pc-controlled cars (they might be a lot stupid...)
    • pc-controlled peds (they might be a lot stupid...)
  • Huge map
    • scrollable map
    • map of about 1/4 of the city
  • Cars
    • about 10-20 different cars
    • player can select his cars on the menu - DONE (not yet implemented)
    • each car has different handling - DONE (not yet implemented)
    • *MAYBE* cops
  • Scoring
    • hit&run score
    • accidents score
    • max speed and other stats
  • Online(if people help me...)

Recently there has been a surge of homebrew clones of popular PC games to the PSP. Clones such as StarCraft, Age of Empires, Red Alert, and more. Remember, developer companies of these games still have active copyrights on their games. Ripping sprites from their games and using them in your own homebrew port is illegal, regardless of what coding of the backend is like (obviously homebew code since the source for these games has not been released yet). Also, using the game's name in your port, even with different in-game sprites, is also illegal. So you could have a clone of say StarCraft, call it StarCraft PSP, and use different sprites as well, but you would still be producing illegal material.

 » #9 is correct

Not only are you correct in every word, but it also amazes me that people will sit there and complain about PSP having nothing but ports, but yet they love playing nothing BUT ports on their homebrew capable PSP? Hypocrites.

 » Impressive

While I don't have high hopes for this project (and I predict it will be discontinued soon), I do applaud the author of this project. Good luck in future projects.

   by Pauk (Unregistered) - 2006-05-07
 » unlikely

While I hope this project gets off to a good start I highly doubt its going to go anywhere.

He says "Im 15 years old and new to programming.", and now he's wanting to port a full game (one of the hardest things to program) that was developed by many experienced programmers worked on.

It'll probably only go so far before the author hits a brick wall of their ability.

» illegal makes me happy..*wisper*down there....

illegal..hmmmm.. how many p2p apps do you have on your pc??..downloading anything with those.music etc..is illegal ..or how many emulators are on your psp?.roms are illegal ..blah blah blah...

.. unless you intending to sell or make any kind of money what so ever off of these cloned programs i dont see problems with it.. their just fan games..or whatever you want to call them..half of these ports probley wont even reach full original playability..so **** it ..who cares..shut the **** up and go download some music..

thats just my opinion..but im an idiot so carry on..

comments depicted in this msg do not neccicarily reflect on the opinions and or religious beliefs of others..

Actually #9 just quoted what the admin of psp3d said on his site about homebrew and copyrights. I agree that the rights of the owners should be respected. After all I don't think that Sony would have been quite as fast at closing up the holes in their firmware if the ISO loaders had never came out. I don't see them getting too upset at a few homebrew games and emulators. It's just that when people started copying psp games that's when Sony had to do something because it was taking money from them and their developers.

 » copywright

Hey guys, humm , yeah i agree with you in one part, i can't code all that, but im just starting, i will learn more and more about lua and i will be able to do it.Copywrights? hmm i thing that people will need to put original files from there GTA2 to they psp, even GTA2 is free to download...

 » Copyrights @ #9

#9, Although every word of what you have said is true, I am unsure of how copyright would effect this, as GTA2 is now available for free download; I'm not sure if it is considered 'Public Domain' .

good job pretending to be Agashka. Almost clever...

Anyhow, props to the maker of this program. Most adult Americans don't even know what a cosin is but this kid's already progamming logic based on mathematical functions.

Kudos

I am the Beta Tester and the screenshooter(call this the way u want;)) And i think its a fan game and if rockstar will a day see this project the only thing they can say is... WOOOOW!!

   by Andy (Unregistered) - 2006-05-07
 » @22

Thats not actually true. Just because the program has been released for free, does not mean any copyrights on the actual content or names are released.
GTA2 is still copyrighted and any unauthorised use of its content is copyright infringement.

Yes i agree, i just leaved them an email. No beta will be released until we receive an answer

 » Clones do suck!

Those clones are just too sad. They mostly contain the original graphics of the game, but thats all. Non of them is playable. They're just cool, because people really want those games ported to their psp. But if your not good enough to clone such a game and make it as cool as the pc version is, don't try it. I don't say what you've done is bulsh*, but i bet you'll never reach the pc-version (not even nearly)..

 » #12 Grandtheftendo

Has Grandtheftendo been released yet? I've been waiting for it but I didn't know he released it. Looks fun.

I also think this GTA2 clone should be entertaining.

 » nice, but...

really nice idea and great to see this beign worked on, but a direct port of the PC version woudl be pretty easy for a good coder and it woudl turn out better

   by Danabnormal (Unregistered) - 2006-05-08
» I think everyone is missing the point

I can't believe some of the complaints I see in the comments sections - give the guy a break. So you don't see the point in this port? Then don't play it. You think Clones suck? That they don't reach a high enough level of quality? Again, don't play them.

This is this guys first program - he's doing the same as a lot of other people who then go on to great things. He has a project which he will enjoy, will be challenging and push him to learn new skills, and as a by-product is releasing the code into the community.

You may be right - it might be too ambitious, it might never be finished, but I say congratulations to the kid - I hope he keeps up the good work and doesn't let comments such as these get to him.
