PSP game loading time speeds - Image 1GameSpot certainly has a penchant for those benchmarking tests. The GameSpot staff managed to get their hands on Sony's PSP Slim and put it through its paces in a set of loading time tests against the original PSP. The results of the test show that while the original PSP loads stuff pretty quickly, the PSP Slim manages to do it much faster in almost all of its tests.

According to GameSpot, the staffers enabled the "UMD Cache Option" in the system settings menu. This feature is supposed to speed up the load times of games by reducing the frequency in which the PSP picks up information from the UMD. They then tested three games (Pro Evolution Soccer 2007, Test Drive Unlimited, and WWE! SmackDown vs. RAW 2007) by checking their initial launch times on the two units, as well as the "subsequent level reloads" for each of the three games.

The results? Well, load times were generally faster for the PSP Slim on both the initial launch tests and the level reload tests, with the Slim being faster by anywhere from two seconds to 37 seconds. On the other hand, in the one instance where the PSP managed to be faster than the Slim, it was only by one second.

Granted, these load times still are still pretty high (106 seconds is still a long load process for a PSP Slim level reset), but for gamers looking for every bit of speed they can get for their games, the PSP Slim certainly looks to be something worth grabbing. Of course, there are other considerations that need to be looked at, and GameSpot also took a look at some of those in their full coverage, which you can check out through the Read URL. Bottom line though: The PSP Slim is quite an upgrade from the original in a lot of ways.

just admit you're so stuck up you refuse to believe anything could be better than your nds soulmate and constantly criticize all psp games of being remakes when all your games are like the 50th remake of mario or some other 30 year old nintendo character.

Hardly any Difference in Load Times, Sony Ripping People off as Usual, Why was there NOT Another Analogue Nub on the Right hand Side Added, No Exuse!!
Then if the Software Sensed there was Two Analogue Nubs then the Game would allow it to Operate in Game!

Right analogue nub would force psp owners to buy the new one though.

   Re: ... (Unregistered) - 2007-09-01

That's his point. Sony half-assed another console, with no improvements other than video out.

They should have left it the ***** alone, or realease a PSP2, not a PSP Half-ass edition.

 » Subtle, but nice

Okay, so it's not really enough to justify another purchase, though I may anyway - brighter screen, TV Out, Memory Upgrade etc are nice but not essential.

I noticed some ignorant prat on Gamespot said "no decent games" - do people who make those comments actually play any games on the PSP? Show me the equivilant of Ace Combat, Tekken, Omni vs ZAFT or WipeOut on the DS...

Re: comeback man (Unregistered) - 2007-09-01
» nds and psps have their own pros and cons

Ok, let us see...

ace combat: no equivalent
tekken: super smash bros (coming out after brawl)
omni vs zaft (never heard of it)
wipeout: mario kart/ need for speed

Ok, now just to be fair, show us the equivalents of these:

Super Mario DS

Wario Touched (no, wtf doesn't count, as it's TOO cheesy)

elite beat agents

yoshi touch and go

POKEMON

(also, I saw some spam about c@shcrate.com/259295 SO, being an idiot, I tried it out. but guess what? It actually works! lol! Try it out, except you've got to replace the @ with an A. I would have put in my own referral address, but it is only fair that the original guy gets credit for it) so, like he says, it is www.c@shcrate.com/259295 (but you are supposed to replace the @ with an a)

also, remember, the ds and psp compliment each other. While the psp has better graphics, it's got horrific controls and boring games. However, the ds has crappy graphics, but a great collection of games and a much cooler interface.

Thus, each has its own pros and cons. However, if we were to get a PSP with good games and a better interface, such as 2 analog sticks and/or touchscreen, or a ds with a bigger screen and better graphics, then it'd be ok to be a fanboy. But right now you can't be a fanboy.

Admittedly, though I like my DS a LITTLE more, the psp owns in the ease of homebrew (i.e. no need to buy an M3 adapter) and also, the pandora battery is too cool. The closest thing we have on the ds is the passme/ flashme, but they're not as cool as pandora.

 » u poor?

Seems like the people trying to justify their reasoning of not purchasing one are the poor kids, u know, the ones that say sony sucks and should offer their games for free but until then they download the isos? yeah, those poor sacks of turds that hang around the internet all day posting comments.

stop being poor.

im going to buy one just to make you envious more so.

This upgrade is hardly worth anyone's money, even paris hilton's. You'll wish you didn't get the anorexic psp once PSP Slimmer comes out, that's for sure.

Actually I'm looking forward to what they can do with homebrew with the ram upgrade. Emulators and ebook should be able to run pretty smooth with it, if they can get custom to run with it.

   Re: person (Unregistered) - 2007-09-01
 » ..

if your having problems w/ GTA, and your running custom FW, y don't you just rip the UMD and run the game off the memory stick? This is if you have a big enough mem stik of course (like 2 GB).

Re: slim sucks (Unregistered) - 2007-09-01
 » Right

Exactly, person. Why are slim supporters celebrating a slight umd speed up? It's still using the crappy umd format.

Homebrewers on the other hand have been able to enjoy long battery life due to game backups for years now. I mean blink and you'll miss it speed because it's coming off the memory card.

So who's willing to give that up for a slight umd speed increase? Go jump off a bridge.

This is why there is no second analog stick, etc.

Wait a few months/years for PSP2, and hell, you'll see a difference.
