Daedalus N64 Emulator for the PSP - Image 1How are we so far? Almost a couple of weeks ago, StrmnNrmn posted an update to how he was doing with the latest build of his N64 emulator, Daedalus R10. Well, it's update time again at his blog, and for the most part, it's good news.

You got something warm to drink? You can read the summary below, or look at the more detailed notes via the Read link, but either way, you WILL want to leave with a warm and tingly feeling inside you, because the effect of almost two weeks of optimization work is a combined (observed average) of 10-15% speedup on various tested games, says StrmnNrmn.

Hence the warm drink. In my experience, a cup of warm cocoa usually helps. Go mix yourself a batch.

  • He's managed to get Daedalus running with the GCC's "-O3" setting, thus enabling all the optimizations that the GCC provides. Previous Daedalus Rs have had to run on -O1, he points out in comparison. Oh, yes, that's worth three marshmallows in the cocoa.
  • Tweaks to the VFPU code for TnL and clipping, much, much streamlining he did with the help of fellows in the pspdev forums. The gratitude he has to the two who've given him suggestions on this is both implicit and understated. Toss in a couple more 'mallows to the mix.
  • Codes for N64 blend modes were also optimized. As he puts it, his original method for emulating this on the PSP "was very expensive" (on the PSP's resources, we assume, and not some monetary budget), so he's rewritten the code some for efficiency. Er, just ran out of marshmallows, but how about some candy sprinkles?
Go ahead. Reward yourself. You deserve it. - Image 1We have to note Strmn's little caveat that the 10-15% speedup is based on all the games he tested, and even there, there's a wide spread of results (with some games showing no changes to speed, and others zipping by like there's no tomorrow). But the important part is that these are three checked off the Things-To-Do list he's trying to stick to for R10. That's why they call it incremental improvement: one thing at a time.

So, how did you like that cocoa?

It's 'cuz the Wii sucks and no one really cares about it. Hence the no replies, no one wants to buy that piece of crap. You're probably the only one commenting on that baby's rattle.

The Wii has been sold more times, yes. But the PS3 has been booted more times ;)

   Re: cX (Unregistered) - 2007-03-20

First of all, 'me', you comment that the wii is dumb. But you were the one who posted the 'first post' comment, which I would consider pretty dumb, so by that same logic, you should buy a Wii because it is 'dumb' and therefore perfect for you.
Secondly, qj, stop over dramatising. StrmnNrmn did not say that some games are 'zipping by like there's no tomorrow' he said there were some significant speed improvements. I know you guys are all for the whole 'blogging with a human face' thing but I see human faces all day. I come home and go on qj, I don't want a human face. I want a robot talking to me, not some silly drama queen telling me about how many freaking marshmallows go in my hot cocoa. I want news not bullshiit drink tips.

"he wii isnt a mext-gen. its a peice of crap. the only thing next-gen about it is that is has a motion censor controller"

***** you. I swear to god the next person who thinks the Wii sucks because of the graphics or because it "isn't next-gen" is gonna get shot by me. What is PS3? An upgraded PS2 with Blu-ray. What is Xbox 360? An upgraded Xbox with some other extra features that don't support gaming.

Wii? Oh right, it has a motion sensor controller that makes gaming completely different. THAT's next gen, not *****ing *****ty graphic enhancements and extras that are just put in for the excuse of jacking up the price.

I don't really care if you hate the Wii because of the controller, or the games for it, but when its about graphics, you're retarded.

this emulator needs more compatibility. goldeneye runs on v8 but doesn't load on v9. most roms over 18MB won't load at all. this includes titles such as perfect dark and pokemon stadium 2. i have been pleased with the speed increases each time, but i would consider compatibility amongst most games to be the problem that needs to be addressed at this point.

   Re: manaox2 (Unregistered) - 2007-03-19

frameskipping is not "fullspeed". It does seem like we could get there on some games though if development continues. There are some games that are probably just not going to make it all the way to fullspeed though.

 » Good News!

GOOD NEWS!

While speed-ups are good news, compatibility was my main problem when testing this emulator with roms. I found quite a few that worked very well, but the majority of roms wont even load. We need more game-specific compatibility.

That said, good work!

   Re: manaox2 (Unregistered) - 2007-03-19
 » I dunno...

It seems easier for the average developer to modify the source code for specific game compatibility then it does for them to speed up the emulator. I want to squeeze as much speed as possible out of it before development goes past the lifetime of the psp or we find out that some games will never run fast enough to be reasonable playable once they are compatible.

   Re: Pete (Unregistered) - 2007-03-19
 » Er...

Ageed about the morons who hang around flaming the work of their superiors, but the n64 is a more powerful console than the PS1... hence the difficulty in making an emulator.

   Re: Ytse (Unregistered) - 2007-03-19
 » lkjgsf

Lol, the N64 is not more powerful than the PSOne. The reason why its not full speed is because it wasnt made from the ground-up like gpSP. Its a port of a PC Emu.

   Re: Sayenthy (Unregistered) - 2007-03-19
 » wrong

It actually is more powerful, just less capacity for game data. The processor is almost 3 times as fast.

That, however, is not the main reason. The main reason is that Sony designed the PSone, so they know the system and how to emulate it very, very well. Strmnnrmn doesn't have those kind of resources.

I'm glad to hear that the emulator's speed is improving. A little more speed work and then he should work on compatibility. I'd rather just play Mario Kart and Mario 64 at full speed than play a large number of games at 66% speed. The gameplay is much more enjoyable at full speed.

Right now, I am thoroughly enjoying Super Mario Kart's time trial mode, which, with sound disabled, runs at a full 30 fps in many tracks.

Another fullspeed moment can be enjoyed if you go to the area in Peach's Castle in Super Mario 64 with the fountain, and it even runs at 30 fps with sound enabled!

Now it's time for me to read StrmnNrmn's full article at strmnnrmn.blogspot.com.

   by Weekz (Unregistered) - 2007-03-19
 » Paradise? No.

For those that don't know, a game running at 15 fps and gets a 15% increase, that's still a measly 17.25 fps. And a game currently running at 10 fps only goes up to 11.5 fps with a 15% increase. Don't expect 30 or 50 fps any time soon.

   Re: Threatened - 2007-03-19
 » yea

that's why those morons are commplaining about how "sh*tty" the release is.

they don't understand that it's not 15 FPS increase.

it's 15% increase. (multiply .15 by the current fps and add that to the current fps and there's the newer verson's fps)

   Re: Rich (Unregistered) - 2007-03-19
 » You're wrong.

Let me explain this. You seem to misunderstand.

20fps is normal for most N64 games, and that IS full speed.

F-Zero X is the single, ONLY N64 game that runs at 60fps. All the rest run at either 30fps or below on the actual console, and were not designed to run any higher. For example, the full speed of Mario 64 is 30fps, as set by Nintendo when designing the game. For Zelda it is only a mere 20fps. So 20fps will be full speed for zelda on this emulator - any higher, and the game will be running faster than it was intended. Which is why a speed limiter is needed.

For more proof and information, just look at this thread which will explain everything (and prove that you are wrong):

http://forums.qj.net/showthread.php?t+98809

   Re: cX (Unregistered) - 2007-03-20
 » F-ZERO X

That was the most extreme game ever. No other game was 60fps because no other game on the 64 was that hardcore. GX on the GC sucked because of the LOUSY TECHNO SOUNDTRACK. More games need power metal soundtracks, especially games like *prepares for flame* Metal Gear Solid, it would make it seem like it was a good game you are playing.
