God of War: the end - Image 1

If we were to insert a joke here about God of War's Kratos, it would be something along the lines of him being really short where it's supposed to count. By that, of course, we refer to the overall length of his most recent videogame outing, God of War: Chains of Olympus.

Wired's Chris Kohler reports that the entirety of the game can be finished in under five hours. Just add 30 minutes of preview code gameplay into the time you see in the picture above, and you have an inkling of how short the PSP God of War experience is.

That being said though, you have a relatively large spoiler now right in front of you, especially if you know what the Fields of Elysium refer to. Whether or not Ready at Dawn's God of War outing for the PSP will be a good buy is still up to you, however, so you may just want to remember that old masculine adage: It's not about how long it is, but how you use it.

 » guess what dummies

90 percent of DS games lasts less than 5 hours.
heck your parents even paid full for super mario bros which is a 10 minute game.

   Re: xche78x - 2008-02-28
 » longetivity

of a game is in the hands of game developers.
they decide to make a game finish at a certain timespan because they felt that the exciting game experience is fulfilled.
the length of a game should not be a basis of its greatness, there are tons of short games that we played and enjoyed each and every minute of it, and there are also uber long games that we stopped playing because it feels senseless to grind and waste time playing it. a good combination is almost always sufficient enough to warrant your purchase. take metal gear solid series for example, we pay full price gladly because even though we can finish it in 5-10 hours, we had FUN on the time spent playing it. and that is the most important thing on playing games, we should have FUN.

Devs can easily make a game long, yes they easily can do it but do we really wanna play such frustrating game?

God Of War /2/chains are only some of the few games that i can say is EXCITING and FUN each and every step of the way. Its even slightly better than GTA's on PSP.

I bought and played New Super Mario completing it 100 percent in just few days and im not complaining about the shortness of the game because im HAPPY during the time im playing it!

 » hmm

That's damn short. Supposedly there's a lot to bring you back(around 20 hours worth of playtime) but when the main meat of the game can't account to much, then that's a shame.

Let's just hope GoW PS3 ends up being 40 hours or something hahahahaha blu ray, roxxorz my soxxorz. Or whatever you kids say these days.

 » yep

40 hours will be awesome alright, u have great taste :D

 » Explination?

A possible explanation might be that the game makers don't realize that most PSP owners don't play their games at the bus stop or while walking to school, they play them at home. They need to understand that most PSP owners DO have the time to play a 10+ hour game...

omg!!! U killing!?
5 hours!?

   by SynGamer - 2008-02-27
» Did he even take the time to enjoy the game?

I would be willing to bet that this was a rush to get through. No exploring for hidden treasures/rooms, just a straight play-through. If it takes 5 hours to do that, then i'm more then happy to actually enjoy the game at a normal pace.

Plus, that was on normal difficulty, i may just bump it up a notch for my first play-through.

 » what

how'd u get a copy of the game?
its not even on bittorrent yet.

   by Jtcp - 2008-02-27
 » How?

The person works for WIRED, so im sure they get an advanced copy of it, IGN had already reviewed the game last week. Generally publications in high places are given advanced copies to review the game and get the good word out early in the hopes of selling more copies of the game.

 » Pfft!!

OMG! "Only 5 hours," Thats how long it took me to beat the original two games, so shut the ***** up you whiny ungrateful bastards! Its not like you aren't going to come back to beat it again and again, how many of you have actually played GTA once through and NEVER touched it again. Same case here, great game none-the-less.

   by axbass21 - 2008-02-27
 » maybe only on normal?

maybe it's longer when you play on a higher difficulty setting. in the screenshot you can see the game save says difficulty is normal , so hopefully the higher the difficulty the longer it will take to complete.

 » So??

Five hours? Has he been speed running through the game or what?

IGN reviewer said the story is 7 hours, 1UP reviewer said he put in over 20 hours into the game. It sounds about right for a portable iteration of a single-player game. The real value of this type of game comes from playing it again at hardest difficulty and unlocking/completing the bonus challenges. I have played both God of War games on the PS2 at least twice each because it's simply that good.

If a game is solid and fun for 5 hours, then it can be fun for 15 hours more.

It just seems like this guy is trying to make the length of the game sound like a bad thing. As if THE most ambitious and technically astounding game to come out on a handheld is not worth your money.

F*** this guy!

   Re: Someone_PR - 2008-02-27
 » well...

well.. 1up said it took 5 to 6 hours the first time but then he play it again and he have like 20 hours playing it making combos and all that.... ign take them 7 hours... to me that it's the real play time...

Maybe this guy just do grabs and keep playing I don't know... it's weird when people play the game just to finish it and not to having fun...

Anyway look the reviews of this game.. 9/10, 9.5 of 10... 4.5 of 5... this game is a must buy

 » UMD Capacity

Considering the limited UMD Capacity which is 1.8GB and the awesome graphics of this game. the playing hours will be short.

i'm imagining Angry German Kid's response to this

   by YAMI ANUBIS X - 2008-02-28
» Well 5 hours is better than the 35 minutes you get in SH0

If you do a speed run in Silent Hill 0rigins, it only takes you about 30-35 minutes to complete and thats a nice looking game for the PSP but WAY TOO SHORT!

Compared to this game, this game is ALOT LONGER THAN THAT GAME!

   by that1guy - 2008-02-28
 » why be upset??

why is everyone so upset with it only being 5 hours long?? the ps2 God Of War games i finnished in only 6-7 hours and they had alot more than 1.8GB of storage...........

   by imapterodactyl - 2008-02-28
» What I'm most interested in....

...is that I looked at a screenshot that I'm then told is a spoiler after the fact. I'm not trying to be anal, but could the image be a text link next time, with maybe a spoiler warning with it?

Also, If the whole 5 hours is as fun as the demo, then great! I have a lousy attention span and I usually start to lose interest in most games around the 5 hour mark anyway, especially once I realize I've still got another 10 hours to go.

Finally, Super Mario Bros. is definitely not a 10 minute game. I mean sure, if you're doing a speed run and using warp zones; but then you're missing big chunks of the game.

   by org3rulz - 2008-02-29
 » .......why bother with a description !

well then in this case its the journey not the destination (or more to the point how long it took to get to the destination) that matters and i totally agree with imapterodactyl i have lousy attention span and i usually judge games by gameplay not how long it takes (although im really partial to Tales of Symphonia nothing under 80 hours for the tales series !!! period!!!)

   by Stealth! - 2008-03-02
 » Not a surprise really.

I mean the first two God of War games on PS2, can be finished in 9 hours. But different people finish the game in different times. So i already pre-ordered it so im going to enjoy it.

   by prodegy - 2008-03-03
 » OMG

tell me it is not true, are u kidding me, there are a lot of things that i can do for 5 hours but never feels like 5 hours, this is a rip off of the millenium, i was finally glad that the PSP had finally gotten a unique God of War version unlike the popular DS but now there is this news about it being 5 hours, even though the game ends up being awesome to the limit, 5 hours is way too short, dammit!!!!!!

   by iconet - 2008-03-09
 » just finished

I've just finished the game within 5 hours in normal difficulty got all the relics, weapons and upgraded them at max, health and magic is at max as well...for the first sight it seems too short but for the second it is a hell of a good game compared to other psp titles! still worth to buy! there were minutes when i was just looking the details on my tiny screen and couldn't believe it :]
