Goofy Exploit - Image 1

Just a little while back, Fanjita wrote a small article on what the people with non-homebrew-able PSPs should do. In my opinion, waiting for an exploit was the most sensible thing to do. And boy, you guys didn't have to wait very long! The Noobz team has just come out with an exploit that works on all firmwares up to 3.03, which is the latest firmware Sony has been able to come up with! This means that every firmware available currently is hackable and hopefully, downgradeable soon!

As of now, the only homebrew that runs through the exploit is a simple Hello World proof of concept, but we all know what the PSP scene can come up with in a very short while. And that's exactly what's gonna happen since Fanjita himself said that a 3.03 Downgrader will be coming soon!

Here's what Fanjita had to say:

You remember that the only thing holding us back from a downgrader for v3.03 was the lack of a user-mode exploit?

Well, we don't like to be held back from anything, so we went back to basics and looked over some of the old exploits. And what do you know? We found one! We did a little digging into the old GTA exploit, and discovered that it hadn't been properly patched after all.

We'll leave it as an exercise for the interested reader to figure out exactly how we got past the patch (and to give Sony a little while longer before the head-slapping "Doh!" moment :P)

I did have a talk with Fanjita and what surprised me the most was that "the only reason it took so long to find is that no-one thought they'd fix it so *badly*"! The most important question right now would be the availability kernel mode, and in Fanjita's own words, "It's a bit tricky, but yes, the kernel mode hole found by Team C+D still works from the Goofy exploit." The downgrader will use this to perform its magic.

The only catch is that you need an unpatched GTA:LCS UMD. Yes GTA Liberty City Stories, NOT Vice City Stories! The new UMDs being sold in shops are already patched, so you'll be better off finding a used one or asking your friends if they have one.

Here's the usage instructions:
  • You need an original, unpatched GTA:LCS game. The new copies that you find in the shops now will not work.
  • This only works for Liberty City Stories, not Vice City Stories.
  • Extract the files from the ZIP into the /PSP/SAVEDATA folder on your memory stick.
  • Start the GTA game, and enjoy the feeling of freshly-minted homebrew :D

UPDATE: Now we're sure all of you have been itching to give this exploit a try. Sadly, not everyone is fortunate enough to have the unpatched GTA: LCS UMD needed. Thanks to brandon6199 we can all have a look at "how this exploit works and what it looks like" (his very words).

» Re: hurt for Sony + Developers

@chepu:
Eh. It's Sony's own fault for locking down homebrew; if HB was *only* unable to access the UMD drive, rather than being fully crippled, you wouldn't have the smart fellows in the scene hacking at the kernel.

They'd be writing homebrew instead.

 » Coool

Like som guys said, it remembers me when I had 2.6 because I got a preowned PSP and bought GTA and then a bit later came out the eLoader... I remember it was a bit hard to get hombebrew working in the beggining, having to try a lot of times and getting the battery off XD

never got out of 2.6 anyway, then I had 2,71 SE-B'' until today 3.03 OE-C owns!

Yeah I know retard.
I've never owned a psp that doesn't have homebrew compatible firmware so I know what it's capable of. But that doesn't matter, the main reason ppl are happy is b/c now they can play ISOs. Are you telling me you only play homebrew games? And roms are illegal too so that doesn't count.

   Re: Jin (Unregistered) - 2007-01-26
» Hate to say it but...

Those people are right. After this the PSP is going to go downhill fast due to piracy. And that's all I'm stating about that comment. I'm not saying, "It's Sony's Fault!" nor am I saying, "It's those damn pirates!" I'm just saying thanks to piracy creators are going to realize what a waste it will be (money-wise). Our only chance after every single new person gets this downgrader, is to just hope for bigger and better homebrew if we want anything new. You may be thinking, "Yeah right you idiot, they're going to keep making PSP games." Think so? Maybe. But it won't be to the full potential if they decide to do so. The only thing that I'm going to get mad at is every single noob kid that just so happen to hear about the scene asking, "Okay now how do I do this? lol" because that has been asked one million times, and you can't avoid it because it will pop up everywhere. I was hoping the only people wishing for this was the people that had un-downgradable PSP's, everyone else that runs 1.5's or Open Edition, you should be saying, "Oh-no..."

 » great work guys

great work guys but how do i get off the flamming screen?

   Re: metalspector (Unregistered) - 2007-01-27
 » idiots

first piracy is not killing the psp, second the psp will die but not because of homebrew or isos or anyof that, it's because sony made a crappy portable machine and stamped it a high price thinking the nameplaystation would sell millions of psp and they sold a few that way but have sold such a little amount, and people who have bought the psp have bought only a few games because onsidering it's a portable the games are at high price. First whoever bought the psp for playing commercial games and is older than 9 years old is a retard. First why play portable games when you have a computer or home console, and second would you really play psp when you're going to a restaurant, a friend's house, school, vacatiobn or any great human activity? Videogames are to be played only 1-2 hours a week, otherwise you are an addicted fellow and need help (but ifyou're a young kid I can understand since young kids are very entrhalled with the ganeboy ds and playstation because they don't understand that when you got to your granfathers house or on vacation, ect. you will have more fun not playing youre protable machine). In fact I bought the psp just for homebrew and because I got it cheap, in fact I only use my psp like 2 hours per month, only electronic devices I use often are the computer when I'm home like an hour a day and the ipod which that I cannot leave without (portable iron maiden concerts, portable dream theater concerts, portable avanged sevenfold concerts, portable korn concerts, portbale slipknot concerts, portable evanescence concerts and portable dimmu-borgir concerts and many more, I cannot live without my semi-live music concerts).

   Re: Jin (Unregistered) - 2007-01-27
 » First off...

When I read MetalSpector's post, my first thoughts were, "Wow." and, "What an idiot." It's almost like you posted a comment just to see how wrong you could actually be. Mission: Accomplished, big guy.

In my original statement about the PSP going downhill I said, "I'm not saying it's Sony's fault." You are. "Omg Sony did this, they did that, they didn't protect their hardware." No *****, sherlock? You're basically blaming Sony for such a high price and piracy, like they made people download ISO's instead of buying games.

You stated, "Why play portable games when you have a computer or home console." Um... This is where you begin to get retarded. You answered your own question in the sentence. "Portable." Not "Home console or PC." And sorry killer, but I doubt very, VERY much people only play video games 1-2 hours a week. I'd go as far to say that you have a better chance of being hit by a train completely made of cow *****, then people playing video games 1-2 hours a week. Did you even think about anyone else besides what you just assumed was the correct response?

Then you go on to basically say, "I can't live without my iPod." That's just one more portable device that you use, isn't it? Sure it's no Playstation Portable, but you rely on it for something to have, listen to, something to do during the day. Same with the Playstation Portable. It's fun being on boring car rides, flights, situations that you normally would be in with no PSP, and even sometimes just at your house, and be able to play PSP, as opposed to Not having one.

And to the rest of you who posted your comments about the homebrew is only 5%-10%, hate to break it to you, but Err. I could tell the people that are saying, "NO WAY LAWLS." are the very same people that have a 3.03 and wish this downgrader would come out.

Re: John Doe (Unregistered) - 2007-01-27

i think homebrew is eather dead or in that short home streach awaiting death in the last 6 months we have heard nothing about the n64 emu, the snes emu has been abandoned and the nes emu has its share of unresolved probloms and in reality those are the onlyones that people use now homebrew has just become a scene of paranoid teenage angst aginst a sysem that is controlling who makes the games the

i encourage anyone who wants to add some life into this to contenue the work of the n64 emulater team and snesxtyl that is the only thing that will save the scene

not that it affects me at all (oe-c) but it kinda sucks u need gta:ls unpatched umd for this. basically if anyone that has a firmware that's higher than 2.8 chances are they are new to the scene and don't have this OLD umd to begin with. kind of a catch 22 but still cool that it's possible.

Because at least you can pass around a known UMD to your mates etc. I agree it's not as good as a TIFF exploit, but it means that if people really want to downgrade they can (obviously not right at the moment, but no doubt shortly)
